What will this role of Assistant Curator entail?

As the Assistant Curator, you’ll support the Curator in managing the Animal Department in line with agreed strategies, whilst ensuring colleagues have the required resources and support to ensure high standards of animal husbandry and welfare. Your duties will include, although not be limited to:

  • Ensuring the requirements for animal welfare and the presentation of the collections are met
  • Overseeing the capture and restraint of animals
  • Ensuring up to date knowledge and understanding of the animal species within the collection
  • Effectively line managing colleagues, providing motivational drive and support
  • Liaising with key departments within the zoo including Veterinary, Maintenance, Guest Services, Human Resources and others
  • Contributing to the overall management and organisational development of the Zoo

What will I need to be considered for this Assistant Curator vacancy?

  • Proven experience within Zoo animal management, with a working knowledge of all taxa within the animal collection
  • Superb leadership skills, with the ability to effectively motivate colleagues
  • A passion for the Zoo’s work and purpose
  • Good IT literacy with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ZIMS (Zoological Information Management Software)
  • A positive and flexible approach to duties and working hours
  • Be willing to be trained as a first aider and provide support as required

What will I receive in return?

As the Assistant Curator, you’ll receive a salary of £28,000 to £30,000 (level dependent on experience), along with fantastic additional benefits including 31 days holiday per annum (inclusive of bank holidays), enhanced 5% company pension contribution, a staff membership card giving you free entry to the Zoo on your days off and discounts in our retail and food outlets, and free onsite parking.

You’ll be employed on a permanent contract, working an average of 40 hours per week, 8am to 5pm, 5 days out of 7.

Location: Atherstone, Warwickshire (on the A444, which is easily accessed via the A5 and the M42 Junction 11).
