QUALIFIED ANIMAL KEEPER


A vacancy has arisen for a Qualified Animal Keeper at Banham Zoo.

About the role:
The successful candidate will work under the leadership of our Lead Qualified, Assistant Head and Head Keepers, providing the best possible care and management for our diverse collection of animals.  Taxa include primates, felids, canids, large hoofstock (including giraffe), small mammals and birds.

Flexibility is key to the successful operation of the animal department as a whole and Qualified Animal Keepers are expected to be able to provide cover across a range of species.

Key accountabilities:
  • Provide the highest level of husbandry according to the needs and requirements of the animals in your care
  • Effectively handle animals to minimize stress and risk of injury to all involved
  • Assist in the supervision and development of staff responsible to the role to address staff learning and development needs and promote a positive working environment
  • Ensure a positive impression of yourself and the company is presented to all customers (internal and external) at all times to reflect the quality of the organisation
  • Monitor compliance within the department of policies and procedures in relation to administration and health and safety to ensure they are appropriately followed
  • Continuously develop yourself through appropriate learning and development activities as agreed by line management in order to deliver excellence

About you:
You are expected to have worked full time in a zoo environment for at least 4 years.  You MUST possess the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals (ANCMZA) or Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) and have experience working with some of the taxa identified above.  If you do not hold this qualification you will not be considered for the position.  The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills. 

You will have an understanding and interest in modern zoo animal management, including animal enrichment and training using operant conditioning methods.

A full driving licence is essential and candidates are expected to be computer literate with a reasonable understanding of Microsoft Word and ZIMS although training in ZIMS can be provided if necessary.

About us:
Based at Banham Zoo you will work an average 40 hour week with every third weekend off, however, working hours will be flexible and include bank holidays and occasional evenings.

Some additional weekend cover may be required to provide holiday cover.  No accommodation is offered with this role.

 Colchester Zoo are looking to recruit a full-time qualified animal keeper to work on one of its most varied sections which houses the Zoo’s largest cats to one of its smallest residents the Leaf Cutter Ants.

This post provides the opportunity to work with Amur Tigers, a breeding pair of Pygmy hippo, Timber Wolves, Patas Monkeys, a number of different Vulture species, Owls, Visayan Spotted Deer, Visayan Warty pigs and a number of reptile and fish species. The successful applicant will be part of a small team entrusted with the care of the above animals and will be required to work with dangerous species in a safe and secure manner, input ideas for the continual progression and development of animal husbandry and enclosure design and carry out talks and presentations to the public as well as maintain high standards of animal care and breeding management.

We are looking for an individual who is highly motivated and hard working, with a minimum of 2 years experience working in a zoological collection. Excellent customer service, communication and animal husbandry skills are essential and experience with any of the above named species and in particular someone with a keen interest in reptiles and aquatics is preferable.
Applicants must hold a qualification in the Zoo animal management certificate or equivalent and have a full valid driving licence.

This is a permanent position with a start date as soon as is possible and Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.

HUB – SEALIONS/FARM/FLYING BIRDS/PARK BIRDS
£20,694 per annum inclusive of allowances

The Zoological Society of London has a vacancy for a Qualified Keeper on the Hub - Flying Birds/Park Birds/Sealions/Farm - based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.
Duties will take place on all of the elements on the Hub however there will be a strong focus towards the Sealions and Children’s Farm.  The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate both a good knowledge and understanding of, together with a proven record of the application of positive reinforcement techniques in regard to training sealions as well as animal training in general. A strong interest in domestic stock would be an advantage.
Enthusiasm, good communication skills and the ability to present animal demonstrations to large audiences are essential to this position.
Candidates must have relevant work experience together with an appropriate vocational qualification e.g. City and Guilds DMZAA (or equivalent).

Qualified Keeper Herpetology


Qualified Keeper Herpetology Section at ZSL London Zoo
Salary: £24,376 p.a.

ZSL London Zoo, based in Regent’s Park in London, is looking to recruit a Qualified Herpetologist to join our Herpetology Department.
The role will involve the day to day husbandry of a large and diverse collection of reptiles and amphibians, focussing on animal welfare, bio-security, record keeping and ensuring that exhibits are maintained to the highest standards.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate an in depth knowledge of current herpetological husbandry practices. We are looking for proven experience in the successful husbandry of both reptiles and amphibians. Prior experience in other zoos, private collections, Museums, Aquariums, Universities, and in the field would be an advantage. Experience working with venomous reptiles would be advantageous but not essential. A logical, precise and scientific approach to animal keeping is required and the successful candidate will understand the conservation, research and educational role of ex situ animal populations.
Good communication skills and experience of dealing with the public is essential, together with the ability to work effectively within a team. Hours are 37.5 per week, worked within a roster which includes weekends.

We are recruiting for a Qualified Animal Keeper to join the animal management team at Marwell. Our Qualified Keepers must have a strong generalist background with zoological experience as they may be required to work on a variety of sections. On this occasion however, an interest and previous experience with ungulates would also be an advantage.

Roles and responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records.

Applicants will need to have previous experience in animal husbandry, ideally working in a zoological collection, hold 5 GCSE’s or equivalent and a valid driving licence for the UK. The DMZAA or equivalent qualification is essential at Qualified Keeper level.

Description of Practice

We require a qualified listed veterinary nurse to work within the exotic department (Great Western Exotics), located within the multidisciplinary Vets Now Referral Hospital in Swindon, Wiltshire. The position (hours and days negotiable) would suit an experienced RVN with prior exotics experience, to nurse our referral and first opinion exotic case load. The hospital has an enviable clinical kit which includes; MRI and CT scanner, digital radiography, fluoroscopy, endoscopy, surgical suite, ultrasound suite, bespoke exotic wards and dedicated OOH team (we offer 24hr exotic cover).
Duties

Your duties will involve clinical nursing of our exotic patients including; monitoring of anaesthesia, radiography, medication, handling and husbandry of a wide variety of exotic in-patients (birds, reptiles and mammals) . There are day to day responsibilities for running and maintaining the exotic wards and equipment, and opportunities to cover weekday holidays and sick leave for other team members if you so wish. We offer a dynamic, supportive working environment with abundant learning opportunities and scope for further qualifications in exotics if desired.

Qualifications Required
This role requires a level of autonomy being that you may be the only VN working alongside our clinicians on any given day - thus we require a qualified, listed and experienced veterinary nurse with exotic knowledge and practical capabilities

We have a position available as a Qualified Animal Keeper on a newly forming bird team at Marwell. This is an exciting time to join us as the team and bird section develops. The position would suit a keeper who has experience working with a variety of bird species including penguins and flamingos.

Roles and responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records.

Applicants will need to have previous experience in animal husbandry, ideally working in a zoological collection, hold 5 GCSE’s or equivalent and a valid driving licence for the UK. The DMZAA or equivalent qualification is essential at Qualified Keeper level.

Qualified Veterinary Nurse




Qualified Veterinary Nurse – Moon Bear Rescue Centre in China

Do you enjoy a challenge, and are you dedicated to animal welfare?  We are looking for a qualified veterinary nurse to join our China Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu.
              

This is an outstanding opportunity for motivated individuals pursuing a career in wildlife care and welfare.  The Veterinary Nurse will work as part of a highly skilled veterinary team to ensure the care of predominantly Asiatic black bears (moon bears) and domestic animals at our rescue centre. Appointment is full-time, five days a week plus scheduled weekend work. Out of hours work may be required.


Candidates should be highly motivated with plenty of initiative and should be comfortable with both clinical and non-clinical work.  There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members you will have distinct areas of responsibility.


You will contribute to the constantly evolving field of bear medicine and management and will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education.


Ideally you should have between three and five years work experience in veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation, zoo medicine or a specialist referral centre. However, less experienced candidates with the appropriate personal attributes will be considered. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential as well as excellent attention to detail, a strong work ethic, good humor and common sense are required.  Applicants must be able to commit for two years.


Applicants must have proficient computer skills including competency with word & excel software. Experience in captive wildlife nursing, rehabilitation or animal welfare work would be beneficial. 


You should be comfortable living and working in a small team within a semi rural setting.
