Head of Education - Twycross Zoo


Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world. We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can.

Applications are invited for the position of Head of Education, a key role within the Life Sciences Directorate. Reporting directly to the Director of Life Sciences, the successful applicant will lead the Education Department in providing an exceptional standard of service to public visitors and visiting groups of students across all key stages. We are looking for an inspirational leader and educator with exceptional presenting skills which can be tailored to meet the needs of diverse audiences. The successful candidate will be a graduate with appropriate teaching qualifications and have a keen interest in aspects of the work zoos undertake and their purpose.

The successful candidate will be required to join the Zoo during a period of change to develop a world class education department, including:


· Lead and line manage the education team through appropriate target setting, coaching and appraisal

· Grow the formal delivery of learning to primary, secondary and higher education markets

· Lead on the development of content including scripting for keeper talks and presentations to visitors

· Deliver a full programme of workshop based activities during school holiday periods

· Provide tutoring and mentoring services to staff undergoing training such as the Animal Management Diploma

· Take full responsibility for health and safe systems and protocols within the department

· Be responsible for the production and implementation of the Education Team’s mission and objectives aligned at all times to the Zoo’s strategy

· Ensure all Zoo procedures, protocols and rules are followed at all times

· Contribute to the overall management and organisational development of the Zoo


The role is full time, Monday to Friday, with some evenings and week-ends as required.

London Zoo - Explainers


Explainers

£10.08 per hour

At ZSL London Zoo, we receive over a million visitors every year, many of whom are families, children and school groups. We are looking for Explainers to enthrall, engage and interact with our key audiences through our fantastic range of live events for 2011.

We are passionate about our animals and you will have a talent for inspiring that same passion in our visitors. You will use your advanced communications skills to engage visitors in one-to-one discussions, lead groups in interactive workshops, or give talks to large audience of all ages.

We understand that our visitors can be as varied as the amazing animals we have at ZSL and our Explainers are just as confident interacting with our youngest first time visitors as with our lifetime supporters. Your days will be spent helping visitors get the most out of our exhibits, by leading and presenting a range of public events to inspire, entertain and educate our audiences about the varied work of the ZSL.

You will receive full support to learn new material and develop your presenting style. Experience of working with children is essential, ideally in an informal learning context.

Seasonal work is available from April until the beginning of September 2011. Applicants will need to be flexible as weekend working is required.
