The Role:

We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Mammal Team Manager to lead our Rhino Team. The role will involve the daily management of the section along with mentoring, training and developing a large team of staff and interns; building strong working relationships within the team and with other departments. The role will also involve representing the Rhino Team at internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas.

The successful candidate will have:

    •    A minimum of HND or degree level in Zoo Animal Management/Zoological Science, or have equivalent experience
    •    Proven experience of working within a Zoo environment
    •    Extensive knowledge and expertise in animal husbandry and management with a focus on two species of rhinoceros and hoof stock including several deer and antelope species
    •    Animal conservation experience and an understanding of environmental issues
    •    A proactive approach to developing new ideas for improving husbandry
    •    Considerable leadership experience and experience of supervising a team
    •    The ability to organise and prioritise tasks in a dynamic environment
    •    A proven understanding of risk assessments and COSHH, to ensure all staff members are fully aware of safety and management procedures
    •    A full driving licence valid in the UK

Competency in the use of computers and basic software packages (including an understanding of ZIMS/SPARKS) would be advantageous for this role.

Salary and Benefits:

Hours of work are 40 hour week on a rota basis (Including some weekends and bank holidays. The salary for the role is £30,227.53 per annum. In addition we offer a range of amazing benefits including:

This unique and innovative project will provide an immersive experience; showcasing the animals and plants of South-east Asia and working towards a better understanding of the vital conservation work being undertaken in this region.

We are currently recruiting for a temporary Team Manager to lead and develop the Aquarium section for a minimum of 6 months. The post will involve the daily management of the Aquarium section along with mentoring, training and developing the team. Applicants should have proven experience of working in an aquarium collection and exceptional knowledge of freshwater/marine fish, displays and aquatics.

Candidates will have a higher education qualification in a Zoological related science (min HND) or alternatively significant experience. Experience on in-situ and ex-situ conservation or research is desirable.

The successful candidate will have considerable leadership qualities, experience of managing a team and be able to organise and prioritise tasks in a dynamic environment.  This role will involve managing the team budget.

A good understanding of risk assessments and COSHH are essential to ensure all staff are fully aware of safety and management procedures. An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead a horticultural team; the successful applicant will be involved in the landscaping, planting and maintenance of 125 acres of award winning gardens and animal enclosures. We are increasingly developing our plant conservation work and the successful applicant would take an active role in that.

  • The successful applicant will supervise and develop staff and manage the operations and resources of the Horticulture and Botany section efficiently to maintain the highest standards of horticultural activities. They will work with the Curator in developing specific zoo projects and plant conservation work and manage their operational development and delivery.
  • The successful applicant will have a minimum of an NVQ 3 in Horticulture or RHS General. They will have a PA1 and PA6 spraying certificate and a full driving licence. They will have proven practical experience and supervisory level experience.
  • The successful applicant will have an excellent understanding of a wide range of horticultural skills and practices including; propagation, growing from seed to planting out, care and cultivation of plants and knowledge of soil science.
  • They will have a good understanding of Integrated Pest Management and an ability to recognise pests, diseases and weeds and treat them by either biological or chemical means. They will have excellent plant knowledge, both hardy and tropical, and a good understanding of botany.
  • The successful candidate will have plant conservation experience and a good understanding of environmental issues, with experience in creating plant exhibits. They will be able to manage a team and have good communication and organisational skills.
  • The successful candidate will ideally have an understanding of plant record databases and labelling systems.

Salary is £30,227 per annum for a 40 hour week.

We currently have a vacancy for a Temporary Assistant Team Manager (maternity cover), to join our busy Aquarium section from June 2014. The successful candidate will supervise and work alongside Keepers to undertake daily animal care duties, focusing on welfare, hygiene and life support. They will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience of working in a zoo/aquarium and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. They will be expected to have a degree in a relevant biological science (or have accrued an equivalent knowledge base) and understand how scientific method can be used to contribute to both ex situ & in situ conservation. They must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the biology and husbandry of marine & freshwater fish and of aquatic invertebrate and have a proven track record in both conservation breeding and exhibitory. Excellent exhibit theming skills are a requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and be committed to ensuring the highest possible standards of animal health and welfare.

Candidates must also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and should have some management experience as they will be assisting the team manager in all aspects of running the department. They will be competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages – familiarity of ZIMS is desirable but appropriate training will be provided if required. Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and of working in field conservation programmes are also desirable.   

Salary is £23,487 per annum for a 40 hour week.

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Team Manager on the Bird sections. The post will involve assisting the Two Bird Team Managers in the daily management of their sections along with mentoring, training and developing the team under the direction of the Team Managers. The successful candidate will provide extensive knowledge and proven expertise in Bird husbandry and management with a wide variety of species within a zoological environment and be able to develop and implement new ideas for improving husbandry, building strong working relationships within the teams and with other departments to ensure excellent standards are met.
Demonstrable practical experience in training a variety of bird species in a zoo environment is also essential. Candidates will have a higher education qualification in a Zoological related science (min HND) or equivalent experience. 

The successful candidate will have leadership qualities, experience of supervising a team and be able to organise and prioritise tasks in a dynamic environment. A good understanding of risk assessments is required to ensure all staff are fully aware of safety and management procedures. This role will involve representing Chester Zoo and the Bird teams for media interviews and internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas. Therefore, excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Salary is £23,487.51 per annum for a 40 hour week.

Applications are invited for the post of Team Leader on the Asia/Elephant Department based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire.

We seek a highly skilled and knowledgeable ungulate keeper with strong leadership and organizational abilities to head up the Asia part of our Asia/Elephant Team.

Working with the Assistant Curator (Elephants) the successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day management of the section and assist in the development of the Asia region.

You will have excellent people skills, exude enthusiasm and have a ‘can do’ attitude.

You will have a proven ability to manage a variety of hoof stock species including rhino, wild horse, deer, camel, yak and oryx. Some experience of working with Elephants would be a clear advantage.

• Project development

A full driving licence is essential for this position.
