Zoo Veterinary Surgeon

Flamingo Land is seeking a qualified veterinary surgeon to join the zoological department. You will have the opportunity to work with our animal care team to provide the highest standards of animal health, welfare and regulatory compliance. Flamingo Land is home to around 130 species, nearly 2000 animals. We are members of BIAZA, EAZA and WAZA.
This will be the first time Flamingo Land has employed a full-time veterinary surgeon, therefore the successful candidate will be able to shape and guide the development of our on-site veterinary facilities and provision as we continue to grow. This position will suit a person who is able to work collaboratively with both the animal care team and the senior management team to identify areas of improvement and ultimately position us at the forefront of zoo veterinary medicine.

Salary
Up to £40,000 pa working five days per week. A flexible approach to working and a keen work life balance is encouraged.

Key responsibilities
  • This is a senior position within the zoo team and reports directly to the Zoo Manager
  • Responsibility for the management and delivery of preventative and curative veterinary care and nutrition at the zoo
  • Manage the relevant regulatory obligations associated with the role and meet the ethical responsibilities as set out in the RCVS code of professional conduct
  • Ensure compliance with current veterinary medicine regulations regarding the use and storage of drugs, vaccines and other veterinary products
  • Contribute to continually improving standards of animal welfare and management, including exhibit design, import and export of animals, quarantine, husbandry training and enrichment programmes
  • Ensuring detailed clinical and pathological records are maintained
  • Oversight of the operation and development of the veterinary facilities at the zoo
  • Liaise with external stakeholders, including external vet practices, specialists, suppliers, etc

Requirements
The successful applicant will require MRCVS status, significant experience, good clinical skills and a proven desire to work in the field of zoo animal medicine. Relevant MSc/Cert/Diploma is preferred. The applicant must be an effective communicator and able to build and maintain effective working relationships.

Flamingo Land Zoo is looking for an experienced Zookeeper to join our team.  The successful candidate will work on various areas of the zoo with an extended number of species in a permanent role, once a probation period is completed. Flamingo Land is a family run popular theme park and zoo in North Yorkshire, and the zoo is a member of BIAZA and EAZA. 

 

The successful candidate will be  working with a range of  species including, but not restricted to, birds,aquatics,hoofstock and reptiles.Experience in these fields would be an advantage but not essential as full training will be given.

 

 All of our Zookeepers are encouraged to participate in a range of activities which include research and environmental enrichment .  The successful candidate would ideally have the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (or equivalent). A drivers licence is preferred. 

 

 The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable as there is a requirement to communicate well with visitors, including delivering public talks and general good customer service. The successful candidate should also be enthusiastic, a good team player and be able to use the correct chain of command whilst doing so.

 

Interviews will take place the week after the closing date. Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.

 

We offer a salary of £20,220 pa, as well as a range of staff benefits.  Holiday Entitlement: 30 days.

Flamingo Land Zoo is looking for an experienced zookeeper to join our team.  Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year.  The zoo currently has over 130 species across a range of different taxa.  We have an active education department and an award winning conservation project in Tanzania.  The zoo is also a member of BIAZA, EAZA and WAZA. 

The successful candidate will join our existing team of zookeepers and could work with any of our animal sections.  Experience with any of the following taxa would be an advantage; ungulates, primates and carnivores.  All of our zookeepers are encouraged to participate in a range of activities which include research, environmental enrichment and education. 

The successful candidate will ideally have:
  • ·       Experience of working in a zoological collection
  • ·       Passed the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (or equivalent)
  • ·       A current driving licence (preferred)
  • ·       Experience with any of the above mentioned taxa (you will receive direct training in the husbandry of all species at Flamingo Land)
  • ·       Excellent communication skills       
  • ·       Experience of delivering keeper talks and visitor engagement activities
  • ·       Computer knowledge and experience of ZIMS would be an advantage


Our zookeepers work five days out of seven with 30 days annual leave.  A competitive salary is provided along with a staff reward scheme.
