Salary £15,581 pro rata, per annum

Bristol Zoological Society is recruiting for an Animal Keeper on its mammal section at the Bristol Zoo Gardens site in Clifton, Bristol. This is to cover a period of maternity leave starting in March 2017 and likely to last until May 2018. It is a part-time position working 32 hours per fortnight as part of the 14 day departmental rota which will include weekends and bank holidays. There also might be occasional evening work.
This is a practical position assisting in all aspects of management and husbandry of the Zoo’s mammal collection. You will need to have a good level of physical fitness.
The successful applicant will be an experienced zoo mammal keeper, with a minimum of two years’ experience working with a diverse range of zoo mammals. Great ape and/or small mammal experience would be an advantage. You will be expected to show a high level of passion and motivation for the job.

A positive outlook, the ability to work within a team and having a good knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is required. We are looking for excellent communication skills, written and oral, as well as knowledge of animal training. You will be expected to engage with our guests and deliver regular talks.
The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science.

Bristol Zoological Society has two new positions for Unqualified Keepers on its mammal section at the Bristol Zoo Gardens site in Clifton, Bristol. Mammal Internship



Mammal Internship (unpaid)

Wingham Wildlife Park has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual wanting to gain valuable zoo animal keeping experience, working alongside keepers on the mammal section.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months, volunteering 5 full working days per week including weekends, school holidays and bank holidays.

The internship is unpaid and would benefit those who have either already gained or are working towards an animal management or similar qualification. As well as individuals who are already established in conservation or animal care and looking for further specialist zoo experience. Experience within a zoo setting and in particular mammals would be desirable. 

A driving licence or access to good public transport is essential and please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation.

Wingham Wildlife Park is a family run wildlife park with big emphasis on animal husbandry, conservation, education and safety for our animals, staff and visitors. This section covers a large variety of species ranging from hoof stock, rodents, red pandas, tapirs & various other mammals.

SENIOR HEAD KEEPER OF MAMMALS



SENIOR HEAD KEEPER OF MAMMALS

This is a supervisory position involving stock and staff management. Responsible to the Curator of Mammals.

Responsibilities to include:
Ø Monitoring the behaviour and health status of the mammal collection on a daily basis.
Ø Training and working closely with the team of keepers.
Ø Performing ‘hands-on’ husbandry duties including animal restraint, enclosure furnishing and handrearing when required.
Ø Ensuring that Health & Safety protocols are being observed.
Ø Assisting other departments when carrying out studies pertaining to the mammal collection.
Ø Writing reports & record keeping.
Ø Co-ordinating a roster and holiday leave for up to 25 staff.
Ø Member of zoo firearms crew

Requirements:
Ø Strong zoo husbandry background (at least five years experience).
Ø Three years in a supervisory position.
Ø City & Guilds in Zoo Animal Management, Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals or Diploma in the Management of Zoo Animals and Aquariums (or equivalent qualification) preferred.
Ø Good leadership and team building skills.
Ø IT and accurate record keeping skills.
Ø Ability to supervise students and volunteers.
Ø Willingness to work weekends, and beyond normal working hours if required.
Ø Full driving licence

Ø 28 days annual leave per annum (including Bank Holidays)
Ø Salaried, pensionable post £25,892 p.a.
