Exciting opportunity for a Resident Veterinary Surgeon

We are seeking a dynamic individual for a unique role as Resident Veterinary Surgeon to join our Bear & Vet team at our bear rescue centre in Chengdu, China (CBRC). The position will involve shared responsibility for the provision of extensive veterinary care to bears rescued from the bear bile industry, and to other resident animals and local domestic animals at each centre.

The Veterinary Surgeon will report to the centre’s Senior Veterinarian, but will work closely with our Bear & Vet Team Director, Veterinary Nurses and Bear Management team. He/She may be required to travel within Asia and participate in outreach and training projects, and work with local veterinarians.

Requirements
§        At least 3-5 years work experience in a large mixed veterinary practice, zoological facility, specialist referral centre, or similar working environment.
§        Excellent clinical and organizational skills, an aptitude for problem-solving medicine and self-directed learning and plenty of initiative and flexibility.
§        A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff.
§        Cultural sensitivity and a history of working abroad, plus a background in captive wildlife management or charitable veterinary work are beneficial.
§        Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.

Appointment is full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.

Veterinarian
Position Summary:  A great opportunity exists for an ambitious, team player and responsible veterinarian to join our expanding team at Loro Parque / Loro Parque Fundación and the brand new Oceanarium Poema del Mar.  The position if for an experience veterinarian with special focus on all aspects of zoological medicine in one of the largest zoological collection in the world. The collection is divided in four different locations, which requires travelling between collections.

Summary of position responsibilities:
•        Participate in the daily activities of the medical service of the park, including primary case responsibility and regular case rounds with Loro Parque / Loro Parque Fundación & Poema del Mar staff.
•        Report directly to the Director of the Veterinary & Laboratory Services, to establish and maintain protocols for the proper husbandry and care of the animals in different locations.
•        Assist in determining research priorities and become involved as necessary in any research projects supported by the facility.
•        Determine medication regimes, treatment methods, feeding, and other protocols as necessary and desirable for optimum animal welfare and husbandry.
•        Administer supplements, medications and treatment protocols.
•        Conduct frequent observations of animals and report any abnormalities, health or welfare issues, or change of behavior.
•        Maintain standard record keeping related to animal health and welfare, animal behavior, diagnostic interventions, treatment protocols, and other departmental procedural documents. Work with department management and staff to ensure the accuracy, clarity, and availability of all documents.
•        Accommodate and assist with regular audits and inspections by local and international authorities as required.
•        Plan/participate in research and conservation programs related to the goals of the Loro Parque Fundación.
•        Assist in preparing monthly reports for distribution to all relevant managers.
•        Train and update husbandry staff in areas of basic medical care to ensure staff comprehension in cases of care for minor incidents.
•        Provide emergency care for the animals in the different collections (Loro Parque / Loro Parque Fundación & Poema del Mar).
•        Provide mentorship, coaching, instruction, assistance, and supervision to veterinary students, work-experience students, and assigned interns.

Essential skills and experience:
•        Qualified veterinarian licensed to practice in the Canary Islands, Spain. This will require veterinary licensure in the European Union.
•        Minimum of 3 years’ experience related to veterinary medicine of exotic & zoo species, with a special focus on aquatic medicine (fish and marine mammals).
•        Good understanding and experience of animal behavior, husbandry, and welfare.
•        Availability and ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
•        Ability to organize workload and prioritize tasks.
•        Ability to communicate with, motivate, and work alongside other staff to build an effective team.
•        Ability to develop and motivate a team of volunteers and/or student intern
•        Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences in both verbal and written forms.
•        Ability to provide and support a vision and direction for the welfare of zoo animals (predominantly marine mammals and fish).

ECZM Resident Veterinary Surgeon 
Reporting to the Head of Veterinary Services, this is a fantastic position within the Society as the Resident Veterinary Surgeon will be trained over 3 years in preparation for examination by the European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management). The successful candidate will be responsible, under direction from the Head of Veterinary Services and/or Head of Living Collections, for overseeing the health and welfare of all animals kept by the RZSS at their two sites, Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park. This will include preventative health measures and planning, relevant disease testing, quarantine assessment of new animals, suitable treatment of any ill or injured animals, as well as post-mortem examination of deceased animals when this is judged to be of importance to other animals in the collection or as directed by the Head of Veterinary Services.

About You
The ideal candidate will hold a veterinary degree and be a current (or eligible) Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. They should also preferably hold a post graduate veterinary qualification in zoological medicine and have demonstrated experience with zoological collections.  In addition, they must be 2 years qualified as a veterinary surgeon and be eligible to practice in the UK.  Up to date knowledge of current veterinary techniques and best practice is essential as is the ability to work as part of a team to build effective relationships with colleagues.  This role would suit an enthusiastic individual who can demonstrate a quality approach to work.

Veterinary Residency in Zoological Medicine and Pathology


The Copenhagen Zoo, in conjunction with Copenhagen University is offering an ACZM- and ECZM-approved postgraduate residency program designed to produce specialists in the field of zoological medicine. The program begins in April 2016, and will run for 3 years. Reappointment for the second and third year is contingent upon the successful completion of the preceding year.
The individual completing this program will have attained a broad clinical base for future involvement in a variety of nondomestic animal practices including zoos, wildlife parks, research institutions, universities, or exotic pet referral practices.

Copenhagen Zoo is a city zoo with a diverse animal collection. Clinic facilities include a basic hospital, laboratories, isolation facilities, necropsy room, radiology, ultrasonography and endoscopy. The resident will work with the zoo’s veterinarians, animal health and curatorial staff, animal keepers and veterinary students. The resident will be based at the Zoo, but will have the opportunity to work with the faculty at the Veterinary College at Copenhagen University.

Qualifications for the program include a DVM degree, and a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience by the start of the program. Candidates must be fluent in written and spoken English, and a willingness to learn some Danish is expected. Candidates must be eligible to practice in Denmark. Priority is given to those candidates that fulfill the following;
1) 2-3 years of practice experience in mixed practice, exotic or zoo animal medicine, and/or completion of a 1-year internship in veterinary practice including zoo animal, mixed animal, large or small animal practice. General clinical competency is essential.
2) Excellent academic record with previous research experience and scientific publications.

We are looking for an experienced exotic veterinarian to work in a new exclusively exotic hospital we are opening on Hong Kong Island. It will be equipped with all the specialist equipment necessary to provide a high level of care for exotics and will have wards dedicated for different exotic species.

The position would ideally suit a veterinarian with at least 4 years experience with exotics and have ideally completed a post-graduate qualification. We have an ABVP (Exotic Companion Mammal) specialist on staff available to mentor veterinarians pursuing further studies in exotics.

Our emphasis is on a 'team approach' to high quality medicine and surgery.

Position Description:

The Vacancy:
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary requires a resident veterinarian to take over from the current veterinarian, per March 2015. The veterinarian is responsible for the daily health and welfare of almost 90 chimpanzees and also undertakes additional tasks to support the overall daily operation of the sanctuary.

The Sanctuary:
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in 1995 by the Government of Sierra Leone, through the help of conservationist Bala Amarasekaran and the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone to rescue, care for and rehabilitate confiscated pets and orphaned or abandoned wild chimpanzees. It plays a vital role in conserving and protecting chimpanzees in the wild through education, communication and legal enforcement. Tacugama is located 20 minutes from Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, in West Africa.

The Role:
The role of the veterinarian will include overall observation and management of chimpanzee health following standard operating procedures. Responses to identified health problems can include dispensing of medication, immobilizing chimps as necessary for treatment, implementation of disease prevention measures and attending to any medical emergencies. Health checks and close monitoring of newly rescued chimps may also be needed. Experience of post-mortem examination procedures and basic laboratory skills are required. Key responsibilities include the capture, filing and maintenance of daily data records.

The veterinarian also will act as assistant camp manager, helping with the overall operational management and smooth running of the sanctuary which includes staff management, general camp infrastructure monitoring and light accounting and administration. The post reports to the Programme Director and the Programme Manager.

Qualifications/Experience:
We are looking for an enthusiastic team player who possesses a recognised university degree in Veterinary Sciences.
Ideally you will:

- have a minimum of 5 years experience as a qualified veterinary practitioner
- have previous experience working with primates
-have a post-graduate qualification in conservation/wildlife medicine
-have experience with disease investigations/epidemiology
- have strong English language and computer skills
- have travelled / lived overseas
- be willing to live in relatively basic conditions
- enjoy working with others to develop their knowledge and skills

Support provided for this position (travel, meals, lodging):
You will be provided with a return economy plane ticket to Sierra Leone and on-site accommodation. A daily meal (local food) is prepared for all staff. A monthly stipend of $800 is provided.
