We currently have an exciting vacancy for a Lead Keeper to join our busy and diverse Giraffe section.

The role:

As a Lead Keeper you will supervise students and volunteers, working alongside Keepers to undertake the daily animal care duties, focusing on husbandry and welfare.  You will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.
The role will also involve representing Chester Zoo and the Giraffe team for media interviews and internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas.

The successful candidate will:
•        Have a HND or degree level qualification in a zoological related science or equivalent experience
•        Have extensive knowledge and expertise in animal husbandry and management with a focus on giraffe or okapi
•        Have experience of working in a Zoo/Safari park setting and of operant conditioning
•        Be open-minded to developing and implementing new ideas for improving husbandry and building strong working relationships with other departments to ensure high standards are met
•        Be able to clearly demonstrate leadership qualities, being an enthusiastic and motivated team player
•        Be able to organise and prioritise tasks in a dynamic environment and have good problem solving skills
•        Have a good understanding of risk assessments to ensure all staff are fully aware of safety and management procedures
•        Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
•        Have a full driving licence valid in the UK

Competency in the use of computers and basic Microsoft Office software, including an understanding of ZIMS, would be advantageous for this role.

Hours of work are 40 hours per week, worked 10 days out of 14, including weekends and Bank Holidays as rostered.

The Role:

The successful candidate will supervise students, working alongside keepers to undertake the daily animal care duties, focusing on welfare, hygiene and life support. They will ensure that all exhibits and support facilities are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful applicant will have:

•        A HND or degree level qualification in a zoological related science or equivalent practical experience
•        Experience of working in a zoo or aquarium with a diverse reptile, amphibian and invertebrate collection with experience of captive propagation of multiple genera of Amphibia
•        A thorough knowledge of herpetological husbandry, exhibition, diet, reproduction and records with excellent exhibit theming skills, both natural and artificial
•        Outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and a proven track record of delivering the highest possible standards of husbandry and exhibitry
•        A thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation
•        The ability to manage and prioritise a diverse workload and have excellent problem solving skills

In addition, the following would be advantageous:
•        Competency in the use of computers and basic software packages including ZIMS would in order to maintain accurate records.
•        Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and of working in field conservation programmes
•        Experience of tropical plant culture
•        Experience with captive breeding Caudates

Job Description : Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education. With the new ‘Islands’ site under construction, due to open in the summer, 2015 is set to be an exciting year! This unique and innovative project will provide an immersive experience; showcasing the animals and plants of South-east Asia and working towards a better understanding of the vital conservation work being undertaken in this region.

We currently have a vacancy for a Lead Keeper to join a busy and diverse section committed to advancing all aspects of zoo-based herpetological practice.  The successful candidate will supervise students and volunteers, working alongside keepers to undertake the daily animal care duties, focusing on welfare, hygiene and life support.  They will ensure that all exhibits and support facilities are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have experience of working in a zoo/aquarium with a diverse reptile, amphibian but with special emphasis on invertebrates collection and must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of entomological husbandry, exhibition, diet, reproduction and records. They will be qualified to first degree level in a biological related science or equivalent practical experience and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and proven track record of delivering the highest standards of husbandry and exhibitry.  They will be skilled in the natural and artificial theming of exhibits.  They will be competent in Microsoft Office packages and knowledge of ISIS ZIMS and SPARKS is welcome. They will be able to manage and prioritise a diverse workload and have problem solving skills. 

A full UK driving licence is desirable. Supervisory experience would be beneficial. The successful candidate will ideally have experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and working in species conservation programmes (ex and/or in situ). Horticulture, aquascaping or indoor plant theming is also desirable.  

Salary is £21,866 per annum for a 40 hour week.
