What you will do:

  • Assists the Zoological Operations Manager & Assistant Curator in daily husbandry and maintenance of all terrestrial exhibits to provide appropriate and enriching habitats for the animal collection and maintain the highest level of animal health and welfare as it relates to the aquarium’s public and exhibit image.

  • Assists Zoological Operations Manager & Assistant Curator in staff scheduling and time keeping of staff and activities.

  • Provides ongoing animal training and enrichment through development of positive behaviours in our animal collection

  • Provides public presentations through programs, social networks and various media

  • Assists Assistant Curator in the implementation of written standards and protocols for all exhibits to ensure the highest standards for operational efficiency, cleanliness, display attractiveness, animal acquisitions and animal health.

  • Ensures that an inventory of supplies and animal food items necessary for operation of this area, and the daily care of the collection, are maintained.

  • Identify animal health problems and liaise with veterinary staff and assistant curator to develop a plan of action to handle the care and treatment of affected animals.

  • Continually seek to make improvements to animal care, LSS, exhibits and activities/protocols.

  • Assist in monitoring and determining needs for improving existing exhibits and support structures.

  • Ensure routine checking of all aquarium exhibits and related LSS areas.

  • Manage staff in daily activities related to cleaning, maintenance, feeding and other husbandry activities required on a day-to-day basis (including diving).

  • Ensure that all LSS equipments are cleaned, maintained and serviced regularly.

  • Reports problems and initiates actions to rectify any faulty equipment to the Zoological Operations Manager and Assistant Curator and/or Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Ensures that all exhibition areas are kept clean and well-maintained.

  • Ensure that the nutritional requirements of all organisms in our care are met including the timely ordering and replenishment of food, monitoring the regime of feeding (food variety and frequency) set by the Assistant Curator.

  • Development of new programs and content

    
What you will be responsible for


Responsible for assisting the Zoological Operations Manager & Assistant Curator in the maintenance of exhibits, training of animals for guest programs and enrichment, Animals Programs and interactions, Health & Welfare of Animals, the acquisition, quarantine and daily care of a living collection of terrestrial organisms. The position is responsible for supervising a contingent of staff including animal trainers, interns, guests and trainees.


What you will need to succeed:

 
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills

  • Experience with working with aquatic systems in an aquarium, zoo, aquaculture facility or related field.

  • Animal Presentation experience in a Zoo or similar institute

  • Minimum 3 years Animal Training Experience in a Zoo or similar institute

  • Experience in supervision of staff or the development and undertaking of guest interactive programs

  • Qualification in biological science/Animal Husbandry or equivalent experience

  • Experience with, and knowledge of, the biology, training and behaviour for any or all of the following: Penguins, Birds, reptiles, Otters

  • Computer competency vital – particularly MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Access databases.

  • Knowledge of Animal Record Keeping systems preferred

  • Development of public presentations and experience with media releases

  • Animal Training Experience a must

  • Work as a team with Guest Services and Front of House to provide a quality experience for guests and a safe and comfortable work environment for staff through continuous maintenance and improvement of visitor and behind-the-scenes spaces, including assisting Front of House with tour-guiding duties when necessary in and around the aquarium facility

  • Deliver extraordinary customer service to all aquarium guests and other customers

  • Maintaining documentation and records

Responsible for assisting the Zookeepers (Penguin Trainers) in Guest presentations and interactions, preparation of guests for experiences, quarantine and daily care of a living collection of terrestrial organisms at The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo.

  • Guest Services Experience

Head Penguin Trainer / Assistant Curator

What you will do:

  • Establish and manage staff appropriate to the maintenance of the collection.
  • Provide training programs for enrichment purposes and animal related guest programs.
  • Ensure that animal quarantine and programmes of specimen acquisition align with the launch programme for new exhibits.
  • Ensure staffs are trained in accordance with the Customer Care Policy.
  • Assume general curatorial responsibilities for the Zoological Department by increasing support while the Zoological Operations Manager is absent or dealing with consultancy and development projects.
  • Assist in ensuring that the local Regulations in the Zoo Licensing Act are satisfied.
  • Attend and participate at scientific/peer meetings on appropriate topics.
  • Assist the Zoological Operations Manager in managing the Husbandry Department budget to achieve agreed objectives.
  • Ensure adequate supplies are available to run the Zoological Department, including animal feeds and equipment and to ensure timely placement of orders.
  • Liaise with the Head of Education, Conservation & Information and the Commercial Manager in the development of new exhibits and the publicity and promotion for the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.
  • Take responsibility for activities relating to exhibits and husbandry.
  • Assist in maintaining the health of the collection.
  • Monitor animals appropriate to the needs of the collection.
  • Work, with the Life Support Manager, to ensure that life support systems are adequate for maintaining the collection.
  • Carry out routine specimen recording and breeding & monitoring programmes.
  • Communicate to the public at all levels and provide staff training

Public presentations in the form of various social network options, briefings, programs and various marketing formats.

Will ensure that all areas of responsibility are reviewed and subjected to a process of continuous improvement.
Will show a responsible understanding and application of environmental issues at home and work, and adhere to the environmental policy of the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.
    
What you will be responsible for

Responsible for the acquisition, training, maintenance, management and monitoring of live exhibits. Supervise and train aquarium staff. Contribute to the development of new exhibits and guest interactive programs.


  What you will need to succeed:

  • A degree in Biology/ Science or equivalent work experience in the related field.

  • A minimum of 5 years in a Supervisory or management role of staff and animal husbandry with development of Interactive Guest programs

  • Strong background in Animal Training, Animal Behaviours and enrichment of captive animals

  • High level experience in maintaining Zoological institutes or similar

  • Experience working with Penguins through training and program development

  • Computer skills is a must

Job Purpose:

The job holder is responsible for acquisition, maintenance and monitoring of live exhibits, administering diving programmes, supervising and training Aquarium staff and contributing to the development of new exhibits and promotions in the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.
Roles Responsibilities:


Operations Management:

  • Ensures highest standards of animal care across all exhibits
  • Ensures animal quarantine and acquisitions of specimen prior to launching of new exhibits.
  • Performs general curatorial responsibilities in the absence of the Curator.
  • Assists the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo in complying with the Local Regulations in the Zoo Licensing Act.
  • Assists the Curator in managing the Curatorial team’s budget to achieve agreed objectives.
  • Ensures adequate supplies are available to run the Curatorial team, including animal feeds and equipment and ensures timely placement of orders.
  • Works with the Life Support System & Maintenance Supervisor to ensure that life support systems are adequate for maintaining the collection and that water quality is maintained.
  • Conducts routine specimen recording and monitoring programmes.
  • Ensures excellent customer service at all times.
  • Ensures continual improvement in all areas of responsibility

Team Management:

  • Assists the Curator with recruitment.
  • Identifies training needs and conducts performance appraisal for the team members.
  • Monitors the team and provides feedback as necessary.

 Adherence to Policies and Procedures:

  • Behaves in line with code of conduct and adheres to the applicable company policies and procedures


Job Context:

The Exhibit Curator has the Aquarist, Lead Aquarist, Lead Aquarist Creepy Crawlies, Exhibit Supervisor, Dive Supervisor, Food Culture Technician and Food Preparation Staff reporting into him


Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Masters degree in Biology, preferably Marine Biology or Oceanography or equivalent experience
  • Advance SCUBA certification from a recognized training agency required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in maintaining an aquarium or similar facility.

Skills:

  • Computer skills required.
  • Good English Language skills required.
  • Valid Dubai driver’s license preferred.
  • Ability to integrate with the team to achieve results.
  • Ability to utilize available resources effectively.

Responsible for assisting the Curator, Assistant Curator, Senior Supervisor, and Supervisors in the acquisition, quarantine and daily care of a living collection of aquatic and terrestrial organisms at The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, and the conduct of internal and external research and monitoring activities.

dimensions
Undertake general and specialized husbandry and curatorial duties to ensure optimal care of Aquarium and Underwater Zoo animals.
principal accountabilities
· Assists the Curator, Assistant Curator, Senior Supervisor, and Supervisors in maintaining the highest level of quality as it relates to the aquarium’s public and exhibit image
· Follow established written standards and protocols (SOP’s) for all exhibits to ensure the highest standards for water quality, operational efficiency, cleanliness and animal health
· Daily activities related to cleaning, maintenance, feeding and other husbandry activities required on a day-to-day basis, including routine checking of all aquarium exhibits and LSS areas.
· Provide feedback to superiors on improvements to animal care, LSS, exhibits and activities/protocols.
· Report issues and assist in the development of actions to rectify any faulty equipment or problems, in particular identify animal health or water quality problems and report to supervisor, medical and water quality staff and assist to develop a plan of action to handle the care and treatment of affected animals.
· Maintain all curatorial areas so they are safe and clean.
· Assists the Supervisor in maintaining an inventory of supplies, equipment and animal food items necessary for the daily care of the collection
· Work as a team with Guest Services and Front of House to provide a quality experience for guests and a safe and comfortable work environment for staff through continuous maintenance and improvement of visitor and behind-the-scenes spaces, including assisting Front of House with tour-guiding duties when necessary in and around the aquarium facility
· Deliver extraordinary customer service to all aquarium guests and other customers
· Assist in on-going aquarium research projects, both internally and externally
· Diving as required on a day to day basis, including maintenance diving, performance diving and shark/fish feeds, following company diving safety protocols and procedures and performing tasks to schedule and to an appropriate quality.
· Maintaining documentation and databases for diving, livestock (animal health and behaviour, acquisitions and mortalities), water quality, etc, where asked.
Qualifications & Experience (Competencies Required)
· A higher school degree in Biology, preferably Marine Biology or Oceanography or equivalent work experience
· Experience in maintaining an aquarium
· Open Water SCUBA certification from a recognized training agency.
· Computer skills an advantage
· Current Dubai driver’s license an advantage
· Any experience Birds or Reptiles is an advantage
