Fixed Term (12 months) – 40 hours per week

We currently have an exciting vacancy for a Scientific Assistant to support the Chester Zoo science team in their delivery of applied conservation scientific activities which help to establish us as a centre of excellence for conservation breeding and animal welfare, and to ensure that our conservation and educational scientific activities both in the zoo and globally achieve the greatest conservation impact.

The Role
The Scientific Assistant will provide research support in the core applied scientific disciplines when necessary with basic research skills such as data collection and analysis. Most support will be required within our Visitor and Community Engagement specialism and will involve social science research methods, such as social survey data collection.
They will deliver general science lectures and talks to applied science stakeholders and also support the effective dissemination of Chester Zoo’s scientific activities through targeted communications.
The Scientific Assistant will support Chester Zoo’s scientific processes by supporting the zoo science processes which aim to determine project feasibility, effective compliance with Chester Zoo’s Research and Ethical policies and ensure projects contribute towards optimising behaviour and welfare of animal collections and the conservation impact of Chester Zoo’s educational and conservation activities.

The ideal candidate will have:
· A Bachelor’s degree in an applied conservation science field
· A strong commitment to conservation and the educational role of zoos
· Demonstrated ability to deliver projects on time and to a high standard
· The ability to present information clearly and concisely in verbal presentations and written communications
· Proven ability to work in and contribute to a team environment
· Evidence of research skills in a relevant field
In addition, the following would also be beneficial:
· Knowledge and experience of zoo-based research and zoo operations
· Experience in social science research methods
· The ability to do general statistical analysis

Hours of work are 40 hours per week, worked Monday to Friday.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

We are currently recruiting for a Scientific Assistant to facilitate applied scientific activities that will support Chester Zoo as a centre of excellence for conservation breeding and animal welfare.

The post-holder will lead and build regular audits of collection concerns and participate in related activities (including information gathering, filtering and prioritising research needs, designing & resourcing projects, matching personnel to projects, coordinating the review of research applications and sample requests, monitoring progress, dissemination and implementation of outcomes to relevant parties). The Scientific Assistant will build links with relevant UK and international working groups to explore the opportunities for multi-zoo studies that support collection concerns. Additionally the post-holder will provide administrative support to the Science Team and will liaise with other departments on science-related tasks.

By the application deadline, applicants must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in a biological field or equivalent experience and have proven experience and skill in designing and carrying out research projects, including data collection, processing and analysis. Essential skills and attributes include proven ability to present information clearly and concisely in verbal presentations and written communications, including scientific writing. Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritise and demonstrate time management, must be demonstrated. Proficiency in the use of software applications to store and graph data, generate reports and slide presentations, and general office correspondence / administration are required. The ability to use initiative and be flexible and resourceful in approaching research projects is necessary. The capacity to build good working relationships and credibility both within and across teams and a strong commitment to animal health and well-being is also essential. Ideally, the applicant should be proficient in the use of statistical software. Knowledge of zoo management or affiliated conservation industry and general zoo keeping experience is an advantage.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week Monday-Friday based at Chester Zoo. The salary is £20,914 per annum. This is a temporary 12 month contract.
