Description: The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (“IMMS”), a private, non-profit organization located in Gulfport, Mississippi, is seeking motivated, dedicated, and experienced individuals to become part of our Animal Care and Training team. The Training team is looking to split the marine mammal and bird departments. Bird trainers will be responsible for all aspects of the daily care and training of different large parrot species and parakeets, providing an enriching environment for the animal and educational experiences for guests.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • ·         Participate in the primary care and training of resident large parrot species and large flock of parakeets
  • ·         Must handle birds and maintain behaviors with all show animals
  • ·         Routine cleaning and maintenance of all bird exhibits
  • ·         Prepare food and feed according to established procedures
  • ·         Maintain all feeding, behavior, training, and medical records
  • ·         Participate in behavioral enrichment
  • ·         Narrate animal presentations and shows over microphone to large audiences
  • ·         Assist veterinarian during routine animal husbandry
  • ·         Report and communicate with Animal Care Supervisor daily
  • ·         Maintain professional working relationships with entire park staff and maintain a professional appearance
  • ·         Be able to work both independently and as a team
  • ·         May plan and direct the work of junior trainers, interns, and/or volunteers
  • ·         Monitor and ensure safe working environments for birds, staff, and guests
  • ·         Public speaking and presentations during outreach events as required
  • ·         May also participate in research studies, educational programs, and stranding response activities with live and dead stranded marine mammals and sea turtles, necropsies, and other activities of the organization as required.


Requested Requirements:

  • ·         Educational requirement includes, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in a science or related field from an accredited university.
  • ·         1 year experience or more in bird training and/or show setting with experience interpreting bird body language
  • ·         Dedicated bird enthusiast not looking to advance to other species
  • ·         Candidates must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • ·         Must be able to understand, communicate, and follow written and oral instructions
  • ·         Must have good public speaking skills over a microphone
  • ·         Candidates should be in good physical condition and capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • ·         Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as scheduled.
  • ·         Ability to spend much of the day outside in the elements including hot and humid weather.
  • ·         Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and training of the applicant.

Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park is situated 4 miles West of Stirling City, Central Scotland. We are now seeking to employ a Bird Trainer \ Presenter, this position has potential to become permanent to the right applicant.
The successful applicant will be experienced in all aspects of bird husbandry, be competent in training a variety of different raptors and non-raptors for display purposes and will be able to present daily flying demonstrations to the public throughout our busy summer season - (March to October)

Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre
Bird Trainer 6 month Internship - 1st March 2016 – 31st August 2016

The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre has an exciting internship opportunity available.
The successful applicant will be working with the Bird Team on a 6 month full-time internship commencing 1st March until 31st August 2016, on a voluntary basis, working approximately 40 hours per week. Volunteers are expected to work the same hours as the animal staff, this is usually 8am - around 5pm.

Internship Specification:
Duties will include:
•        Training birds of prey including parrots, owls, kites and vultures
•        Cleaning indoor and outdoor enclosures
•        Preparing food
•        Cleaning staff areas
•        Helping staff with the presenting of bird shows to visitors
•        Any other duties as required (full training will be given on all duties)

Required Skills:
Previous experience in animal care is an advantage but full training will be given.

Person Specification:
Successful applicants will be hard-working, reliable, responsible, trustworthy and able to work independently and as part of a team. A positive, confident and friendly personality is a must, in order to fit in with our enthusiastic team and represent the Tropical Butterfly House to visitors.
Please note that we expect the same commitment, dedication and reliability from our volunteers as we do our staff members and applicants must successfully complete a trial day before a voluntary position will be offered.
Due to the physically demanding nature of this internship, it may only be suitable for agile people.

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced, highly motivated, reliable and enthusiastic individual to join our keeper team.

The applicant must be flexible about their duties within the zoo and should be prepared to be involved in a range of jobs associated with the daily, safe and smooth running of a family owned and managed zoological gardens.

Jobs will include all aspects of animal care; the applicant will be responsible for various animal species and duties will include food preparation, cleaning, maintenance of the enclosures, aviaries and surroundings, hand-rearing where necessary, assisting the vet and administration of basic medicines, wormers etc, record keeping and risk assessments.

Other daily jobs may include cleaning and maintenance of working and visitor facilities to ensure safe and very high standards at all times, involvement with the educational presentations, supervising and training of trainee keepers.

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team and alone,
  • Endless enthusiasm and an outgoing personality,
  • A passion for and proven experience of bird training along with first rate presentation skills,
  • A good knowledge and understanding of the conservation and education roles of zoos.

Senior Trainer of Penguins




Ski Dubai is looking for a further Senior Trainer of Penguins for its exciting and successful project in the United Arab Emirates.

Joining an experienced International team the Senior Trainer will be responsible for the daily management of staff, daily husbandry, penguin training and leading all high quality penguin presentations


Key Tasks:

  • Operate daily training of penguins regarding daily march, feeding and photo sessions with the public
  • Evident knowledge of effective training techniques, applications, and tools
  • Assist in penguin husbandry and cleaning
  • Maintain daily training records
  • Interact with the public with ease and have good communication skills
  • Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Zoology or related field or equivalent experience
  • At least 4 years of training experience, preferably with marine mammals

 This position is an immediate start for the 2013 season (end 28th October 2013) but may lead to a permanent position for the right candidate.

The successful applicant will be experienced in all aspects of bird of prey husbandry, be competent in training and flying a variety of different raptors for display purposes (owls, buteos, falcons, vultures, kites and eagles) and be able to present daily flying demonstrations to the public throughout our busy summer season.
Applicant must be smart in appearance and willing to work as a member of a team to ensure that the department functions to a high standard, they must be fully flexible regarding days off and willing to work weekends and bank holidays. A full driver’s licence is required and a LANTRA beginning Falconry award is preferred but not essential.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is currently looking for a trainer/presenter for its dynamic and high-profile, natural behaviour displays.  Working with a diverse range of species, ranging from Eagles, Owls, Buzzards and Falcons to Macaws, Amazons and toucan; the successful applicant will work with all aspects of the care, enrichment, training and presentation of the animals used in the displays.  
 
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of flying and training a range of birds of prey, experience of working with trained non-domestic animals, and an appropriate animal management qualification eg ANCMZA or DMZAA.   Good communication skills, enthusiasm and self- motivation are essential.  Preference will be given to those with experience of speaking in public.  You must be presentable in appearance, flexible in your approach, totally reliable, and be able to work effectively both within a team and on your own when the need arises.  You will also need a full driving licence.

Colchester Zoo



Colchester Zoo is currently looking to recruit an experienced Keeper to join their Animal Displays Team. With new developments and species planned over the next year, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to be involved in completely re-developing the current flying displays, and training some exciting new additions to the collection.

The post requires the successful applicant to fly, train and care for a wide range of bird species including Eagles, Owls, Kestrels, Kites, Buzzards, Hawks, Falcons, Hornbills, Macaws, Cranes, Ravens and Guinea Fowl. They will be expected to take part in the daily educational bird presentations and will have the responsibility of being principle trainer for a number of birds.

The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual who has a good understanding of animal behaviour and previous experience training and working a variety of species. The ability to take part in public presentations and flying bird displays is essential as well as excellent animal husbandry skills and high standards of animal care. Previous experience working with the above mentioned species is preferable but candidates with previous training experience with other animals will be considered.

Applicants must hold a qualification in the Zoo animal management certificate or equivalent and have a full valid driving licence.

The Zoological Society of London is looking to recruit a Team Leader for their Hub Region based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire. The region comprises of Sealion and Flying Bird demonstrations, as well as Children’s Farm and the Zoo’s bird collection

This is an exciting opportunity to not only develop the Sealion and Flying Bird demonstrations, the Children’s Farm visitor interaction areas but to oversee and lead a section whose objectives will also include national and international bird management programmes.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate:

 a proven track record of the management and training of birds and mammals particularly for demonstration purposes and be able to demonstrate a range of skills and knowledge in this field.

 a high level of interpersonal and people management skills

 an ability to interact with visitors and a high level of customer care

 a good understanding of bird husbandry would also be an advantage.

All candidates must have a full driving licence.

Chessington Zoo has a full time position available for enthusiastic and career-minded person and is currently looking for an experienced Bird trainer to work on the animal behaviour team.


Your challenge…

Main responsibilities include:

Maintain a high level of bird husbandry and Enrichment on the Section

Provide relevant training to designated stock to present animals in an enjoyable and informative way

Maintain training of birds, and initiate ideas and training

Ensure the Health and Safety of self, internal and external customers

Maintain a constant level of work in the Section with a view to public appreciation

Ensure our guests feel immersed into interactive, educational and informative talks and displays of natural behaviour

Monitor levels of food stores and supplies to minimise wastage.

Work closely with the Head of Section to ensure sharing of best practices and consistency of procedures and processes across Park wherever possible


What you’ll bring…

Our ideal candidate will have/be:

At least 2-4 years professional bird training experience in a zoo or aquarium setting however consideration will be given to applicants with a demonstrated background of animal care, and animal training with exotics

Excellent communication skills

Willing to share their enthusiasm with members of the public and other staff members.

Able to deliver to our guests in a clear, confident and enjoyable manner

Ability to operate in a calm and professional manner when under pressure

Dedicated, hard working and a team player.



Working pattern…

We have 1 full time position available

It is based at Chessington World of Adventures.

Typical working pattern will be 8 hours on a 5 day basis collating to a 40 hour week. This will however be determined by the needs of the business, you will be required to work weekends and bank holidays. You will be based primarily on site, however there may be a need to undertake occasional travel to other attractions.
