Overview of Role:
To provide consistent management of the animal collections and the team that manage them and to ensure the smooth operational function of Whipsnade Zoo. To oversee the Whipsnade Zoo Collection plan.

Other main duties will include:
•    To have budgetary responsibility for the staffing and operational needs of the Living Collections at Whipsnade Zoo
•    To manage the Team Leaders of the animal collections, conduct their PDRs and ensure they are effectively managing their teams
•    To oversee the Whipsnade Zoo Collection plan to ensure a comprehensive collection which meets the priorities for Whipsnade Zoo. This will be done in close collaboration with taxonomic curators
•    Responsible for ensuring that the daily presentation of the zoo is up to an excellent standard
•    Helping the Living Collections teams prioritise daily engagements and ensuring that appropriate trained staffs are available to cover events such as sunset safari, fundraising events etc.
•    Be the first point of conduct for cross-departmental functions, including Business Development, Marketing, PR, HR, Fundraising, Commercial (including the Main Gate) and Discovery & Learning
•    Be the main Animal Duty Manager for the site and responsible for staff training, daily ADM cover. Also responsible for animal emergency procedures and ensure that there is an appropriate level of drills
•    To act as the Firearms Manager for ZSL London Zoo, managing selection, training, licences etc.

Person Specification:
•    BSc in a relevant area or equivalent experience
•    Prior experience in managing and developing large teams
•    In depth knowledge of up to date animal husbandry practices in a zoological collection environment
•    An understanding of Zoological licences would be desirable
•    Ability to prioritise and very well organised
•    Great communicator
•    Able to challenge ideas respectably
•    Demonstrates a consistent, collaborative and respectful approach to management and building relationships with other teams
•    Respects confidentiality
•    Strong problem solving skills and able to help others to resolve them
•    Stays calm in difficult situations
•    Able to stay focused on tasks in hand

Due to new ownership and a new start for the future. The Trustees of Safari Zoo Nature Foundation are looking to employ a Senior Experienced Zoo Animal Department Manager.
The Role will report to the CEO  and be one of the Senior Management team running the zoo on behalf of the Trustees.

The job description is to oversee and deliver a comprehensive, high standard management of this very large collection. To organise staff training, development and oversee records, veterinary department and ALL aspects of the department to the standards or above of the EAZA code of conduct and the UK Zoo Licencing Act.  To be fully responsible for compliance and follow the Trustees mission in full. We can offer an attractive package to the right applicant. A reasonable command of English is essential and we will be looking for a person with experience in managing a medium to large collection. If you are interested in living in one of the most attractive regions of the UK and manage a comprehensive and successful collection of animals and like a challenge then we would love to talk to you. The role is open to European Residents.
Some weekend and bank holiday work will be applicable on a roster system.
On occasion under rare circumstances you may be required to work outside of normal hours.

The Isle of Wight Zoo is the Island’s original and leading zoo specializing in big cats and lemurs. It is located on the popular east coast of the Isle of Wight overlooking a spectacular sandy beach just half an hour’s drive away from the capital town. ZOOLOGICAL MANAGER POSITION



This is a salaried position. The Zoological Manager will spend the majority of his/her time in supervisory and administrative tasks. The remainder of the time will be spent working directly with the keepers and the animals on the Section’s Animal Strings. Each Zoological Manager is responsible for designated work area or Section in the Department. The Section under this position has a wide variety of animals including large carnivores, birds, large ungulates, and reptiles. Staff within the Section will report directly to the Zoological Manager. He/She will perform job performance evaluations with staff in his/her work section and ongoing performance management. The Zoological Manager will be available to assist in procedures and projects, answer questions, facilitate maintenance or grounds work, coordinate interdepartmental projects etc. The Zoological Manager will cover Section Strings as a floating keeper as necessary. He/She is also responsible for various administrative and future planning tasks as assigned by the General Curator. The Zoological Manager should be capable of taking charge of the Animal Department and addressing all potential problems and emergencies.

Job Requirements

• Minimum of five years experience as an animal keeper in an AZA accredited zoo.

• 2 years experience as a supervisor- responsible for training supervision, providing performance feedback and conflict resolution

• Valid, clean drivers license

• Willingness to work unusual hours, weekends and holidays

• Good physical condition; able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and move a minimum of 120 lbs.

• Thorough understanding of behavioral training theory and practical application

• Thorough knowledge of capture and restraint techniques

• Thorough understanding of safety procedures used with captive wildlife

• Excellent communication skills

Experience and Qualities Preferred

• Bachelors degree in zoology, biology or a related field

• Specialized knowledge and experience with birds; experience with large carnivores, large ungulates and/or reptiles valuble

• Computer proficiency

• Leadership training and skills

Salary and Benefits: Starting salary $45,000 annually for full-time, exempt position. Full benefits plus two weeks vacation.

Manager – Zoo and Conservation Operations




A unique opportunity to work at the stunning location of Pensthorpe Nature Reserve,  host of BBC’s Springwatch, located in North Norfolk - in this newly created role.

Pensthorpe spans the River Wensum, a Special Area for Conservation (SAC), and is home to a wide collection of captive species as well as being a Mecca for migratory and native wildlife. Pensthorpe Conservation Trust is part of national breeding and reintroduction program for corncrakes, cranes and red squirrels.

This is a senior level, hands on, role providing leadership of the species conservation team at Pensthorpe, particularly in relation to: the management, housing & exhibition, interpretation, husbandry of animals, the education of visitors, and compliance and administration associated with industry best practice and zoo licensing regulations. The role will also benefit from advice and guidance from the Head of Species Management. The role encompasses oversight of the conservation land management team at Pensthorpe and will involve a close working relationship with the Senior Warden.

The post will report to the General Manager and, ultimately, share a Duty Manager role to ensure day-to-day operations run smoothly. A significant proportion of the job is outdoors and will be undertaken in all weathers and out of typical working hours, as animal welfare considerations are paramount. The position is ideally suited to someone with a zoological background but with a passion for wildlife.

Knowledge and Experience

• At least 7 years experience in the exhibition of animals, captive breeding and zoo animal husbandry

• Demonstrable knowledge of conservation issues

• Demonstrable experience of the zoo/captive breeding environment and the keeping of appropriate records, preferably including ARKS and ZIMS records software.

• Formal qualifications or extensive experience in zoo keeping or conservation breeding

Personal Qualities

• Ability to lead a small dedicated team.

• Dedication to the exhibition, breeding and rearing of animals in captivity.

• Ability to act on your own initiative and to work out of typical hours, as required. • Good communication and cooperation skills

• Flexibility and willingness to take on evolving duties as the job requires.

• Reliability and capacity for hard work

• Ability to handle work of a confidential nature and exercise discretion amongst colleagues.

• Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.

• Ability to prioritise workload effectively.

A competitive salary will be offered depending on experience.
