Husbandry Team Vacancy

Husbandry Team Vacancy

National Marine Aquarium
Plymouth

The National Marine Aquarium, based in Plymouth, is the largest public Aquarium in the UK, as a charity, we are dedicated to “Driving Marine Conservation Through Engagement”, inspiring everyone to take action towards sustainability and conservation of the marine environment.  We have a vacancy in our Biologist team, that works with the live animal exhibits, which are the most effective way of engaging our visitors.

These exhibits include three large mixed displays of 600,000L, 650,000L and 2,500,000L. One is themed on our local life and is the largest native exhibit in the UK.

We are looking to recruit an experienced Biologist - Diver to join the Aquarium Husbandry Team. A background of aquatic animal husbandry is essential as this forms the majority of the role. One to two years experience in a public aquarium setting would be preferred.

A professional level dive qualification is essential to either PADI Divemaster or HSE Professional Scuba Diver (Part IV) standard, other equivalents will be considered. The ability to pass a commercial dive medical is necessary for the role. Diving is carried out in the various aquarium exhibits on a daily basis but is only a component of the position and so not a sole diving role.

Working with the biologist team, a team of skilled and motivated individuals responsible for the welfare of all the National Marine Aquarium’s animals and the maintenance of the variety of exhibits, the postholder will be involved in all aspects of animal husbandry and new project delivery. They will have a keen eye for detail and be able to create exhibits that meet the needs of the inhabitants and also show case them in a natural appearing habitat.  They would be hardworking, methodical and analytical and be able to integrate into the existing team.

The position is for a fixed period of 12 months with an initial 3 month probation period. There is the possibility this can be further extended to a permanent position if performance is of the required level.

The position will be salaried, with work being carried out five days out of seven on a rota basis. Public holidays and weekend working is essential, as care for the animals needs to be provided on a daily basis.

The normal location for work is Plymouth but some working away at other aquarium sites may be required as well as occasional journeys for livestock movement.

Volunteer Divers in Marine Protected Areas (Philippines)

Volunteer Divers in Marine Protected Areas (Philippines)
 Mar / April 2011

The Project Seahorse Foundation for Marine Conservation (registered Filipino NGO) seeks volunteer, certified SCUBA divers (minimum 15 logged dives) who are interested in participating in a long-term monitoring program for assessing Marine Protected Area (MPA) effectiveness in northern Bohol, Philippines.

The surveys are conducted biannually, one in the dry season (March - April) and one in the wet season (September - October). An eight-week commitment is required comprising approximately two weeks of training and six weeks of survey work. Surveys are easily influenced by weather and other unpredictable events, so the duration of the fieldwork may vary. If completed quickly, volunteers will be asked to assist with other conservation work, such as data encoding or assisting with other biological field programs.

The Project Seahorse Foundation requires a donation of $2,400 USD to help cover survey costs, local travel, accommodation, and food. Volunteers must also provide their own SCUBA gear and are responsible for the cost of their return airfare to the Philippines, visa costs, travel/health insurance and appropriate vaccinations, together with providing proof of a current dive medical and dive insurance.

A working knowledge of coral reef fish families and benthic fauna (esp. corals) and flora would be an advantage.

Volunteers will be supervised by the Project Seahorse Foundation Survey Biologist and based in Handumon (Jandayan Island). On arrival in Cebu City, the Project Seahorse Foundation National Coordinator will organize a comprehensive orientation on its programs and projects, MPA survey schedule, safety protocols, and community and team living.

To apply and to find out more information please visit the Project Seahorse website for more details: http://seahorse.fisheries.ubc.ca/AboutPS/volunteerPSFDry2011.html

The application deadline for the 2010 DRY season is November 30, 2010

The Seahorse Trust. Seahorse Tagging Officer.

The Seahorse Trust. Seahorse Tagging Officer.

Since 1994 we have been running the British Seahorse Survey and this has given us great insights into Seahorses around the British Isles, which led in 2008 to us getting them fully protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act

Seahorses are unique creatures with an enigmatic almost secretive lifestyle which gives problems in trying to understand about their ecology in the field and it is unusual to find a site with large numbers of Seahorse resident in it.

We have been working on such a unique site in Dorset, England for a couple of years now which has given us a background to the site and we are just about to start a tagging project to allow us to understand more about the site and the individual Seahorses and others species on and around it.

We are just about to be granted some funds to support our Seahorse Tagging project at Studland in Dorset. The project is innovative and being done under Natural England License and we require a Tagging Officer for a years contract [this may be extended subject to the officer fund raising for the position]

The Seahorse Tagging Project Officer will be self motivated and unsupervised and will individually tag. GPS mark, photograph and do the morphometric measurements for the Seahorses on the site. This data will be collated by the officer to give a greater understanding of this site and will be fed into the British Seahorse Survey and periodic reports on the Seahorses and the site.

The Officer will also be expected to train and work with dive volunteers that will assist in the tagging project.

A major part of the work of the Officer is in working with the local community and visitors to the area and so will be expected to take part in public talks and community days. They will also be expected to work directly with other organisations to push the project forward and attend and do a presentation to the trustees of the trust periodically.

Skills needed.

Essential:

Seahorse experience of behaviour and ecology in captivity and in the field

Fund raising experience

Working with volunteers and knowledge of the volunteer sector

Be able to do public speaking to small and large groups.

Car license, own vehicle.

Must be able to write in depth reports and media articles

Computer literate.

Must be self motivated.

Desirable requirements
Knowledge of national standards for the voluntary sector

Knowledge of committee structures /systems
