Head of Veterinary Services - Twycross Zoo



Head of Veterinary Services


Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMZS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world.

A position has become available for a Head of Veterinary Services to develop and run the on-site zoo Veterinary Department as part of the development of the Life Sciences Department. This is a new role and a unique opportunity to develop an on-site veterinary service at a zoo that is undergoing an exciting period of change.

The successful candidate will have the vision to develop a world class veterinary service in conjunction with the Zoo Chief Executive and Director of Life Sciences. The job holder will be responsible for delivery of the clinical service, together with veterinary nursing, registrars and other veterinary support. The candidate will be responsible for coordinating off-site consultants and general practitioners to achieve a high level of all year round veterinary support. In addition the Head Vet would have responsibility for coordinating and developing clinical aspects of the Zoo’s research output and assisting with the training of clinical vet students from the University of Nottingham. The post holder will also be expected to input on the design of new enclosures and become an active member of the Life Sciences team.

The successful candidate will be a cheerful team player and experienced zoo animal clinician for this exciting role. The applicant will be expected to hold a relevant post graduate qualification (RCVS Diploma or Certificate in Zoological Medicine, DACZM or MScWAH). They must also hold, or be eligible to hold, membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (license to practice in the UK).

The role is full time, 40 hours per week, with weekend duties shared amongst the vets and extra hours as required. Salary commensurate with experience.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with a mission to be “a major force in conserving biodiversity world wide”. The zoo has an international reputation for its high standards of animal welfare, husbandry and conservation breeding and for its contribution to conservation, education and research.

We are currently recruiting for an experienced and qualified Curator of Lower Vertebrates and Invertebrates to join our management team at Chester Zoo. This position will report to the Head of Zoo Programmes and will be responsible for the overall organisation of our reptile, amphibian, fish and invertebrate collection.

In line with the Society’s strategic objectives and a major expansion of the zoo, the role will involve implementation and progression of the animal collection plan; exhibit design and development; the efficient management of resources; staff leadership and development and assisting in the zoo’s conservation and research activities in the UK and abroad.

There will be an emphasis on teamwork and a ‘hands-on’ operational approach.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level in an appropriate animal/ conservation discipline, have a proven track record in herpetology and aquariums, and have proven zoo or aquarium based experience in a managerial or support role.

The role is full time, 40 hours per week, with weekend duties shared amongst the Curators. The salary is £33,525 increasing to £37,250 after successful completion of the probation period (Subject to Job Evaluation Consultation Period).

It is also just beginning a major phase of redevelopment and expansion which makes this a particularly exciting time to join the team.


A vacancy has arisen for the position of Veterinary Manager to run the zoo’s veterinary department. The post holder will be responsible for delivery of the clinical service together with two other veterinary surgeons, two veterinary nurses and a quarantine coordinator/administrator. In addition the Vet Manager will coordinate and develop clinical aspects of the zoo's research output (working alongside other zoo scientists including a nutritionist, endocrinologist and applied ethologist) and run our clinical residency programme.


We are seeking a strong team player and experienced zoo/wild animal clinician for this exciting role. The applicant will be expected to hold a relevant post graduate qualification to Masters level or above and have a proven track record in research. They must also hold or be eligible to hold membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (licence to practice in the UK).


The role is full time, 40 hours per week; with weekend duties shared amongst the vets. Salary is £33,525, increasing to £37,250 on successful completion of the probation period.

Monkey World assists governments around the world to rescue primates that have been smuggled from the wild. At the Centre refugees of this illegal trade as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect are rehabilitated into social groups.

Job description
The orang-utan section comprises three mixed-sex groups and is currently the largest group of orang-utans outside Southeast Asia. The Team Leader would be responsible for managing these groups which are made up of orang-utans rescued from all over the world. The candidate would also be responsible for the European Orang-utan Crèche where orphaned youngsters are reared and socialised with others of their own kind.

The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the section including animal husbandry, diets, operant conditioning, enrichment and health checks. They will also be responsible for staff training and monitoring.

Qualifications/Experience
This role requires a primate keeper with at least 3 years experience. A minimum of 1 year’s experience of working with orang-utans is also essential.

Applicants will need to demonstrate good communication skills, be physically fit, self motivated and able to lead and work as part of a team.

Desirable
  • Full driving licence
  • Shotgun certificate
  • Experience of public speaking
  • Experience of operant conditioning
  • Familiarity with rescue and rehabilitation of primates

We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic and motivated educator to work throughout all age ranges. This is a part-time post of 25 hours per week with flexibility to respond to the needs of the Department.

Educators plan, prepare and deliver a wide range of educational activities and programmes for students and our general visitors both within the Zoo and as outreach.

Marwell Wildlife is a registered charity dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources.

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced Keeper to work on a mixed species section. Roles and responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal welfare, health and animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records.

You will be responsible for caring for the animals on your section with minimal supervision from the Section Manager, ensuring animal houses are maintained to specified standards whilst engaging with guests and enhancing their experience at Marwell Wildlife.

Applicants will need to have a minimum of three year’s practical experience of looking after and working with exotic animals in a professional capacity, hold 5 GCSE’s or equivalent and the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (previously known as the ANCMZA) or equivalent and have a full driving licence valid for the UK.

The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of a team, have the ability to use their initiative, display interest and commitment to animal welfare and conservation and must possess strong verbal communication skills.

Flamingo Land zoological department is looking for an experienced zoo keeper to join our team. Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year. The zoo is in an exciting phase of development that has recently seen the creation of a number of themed zoogeographic areas and the development of the education and conservation departments. The successful candidate will initially be focused on the giraffe, hippo, rhino, zebra, camel, oryx, South America and Australia areas. There will also be an opportunity to be trained on other animal sections within the zoo. All of our zoo keepers are encouraged to participate in a range of activities which include research, environmental enrichment and education.

The successful candidate will have experience working in a zoological collection and will ideally have passed the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals. Experience with any of the above mentioned species would be an advantage, but you will receive direct training in the husbandry of these species. The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors, including delivering public talks. Free The Bears Fund is looking to appoint a motivated, dedicated and caring Veterinary Care and Research Technical Advisor.

The position, based in our Cambodian bear sanctuary 45 km outside of the capital Phnom Penh, will involve aspects of both veterinary care and coordination of research programs. Working closely with the Rescue Centre Veterinary Staff, the candidate will assist the Veterinary Program Manager of Free the Bears Fund in overseeing the Veterinary Care of bears at the Cambodian Bear Sanctuary within Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre. Simultaneously, the candidate will be responsible for the Research Programs carried out on behalf of Free the Bears Fund. This will include training of Research Staff and supervising Research Candidates.

Although based in the Cambodian Bear Sanctuary, the position may require travel to participate in research study, or training in other Free The Bears Fund supported Rescue Centres.

Requirements

  • A formal qualification in veterinary nursing is preferable, though suitable candidates with a degree in a related field will be considered.
  • 3 to 5 years animal related work experience
  • Organisational skills, an aptitude for problem-solving and self-directed learning and plenty of initiative and flexibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, coupled with patience and a strong sense of humour are vital.
  • Ability to work on a team or independently.
  • Experience of working overseas in a captive wildlife situation and charitable veterinary work are beneficial.
  • Appointment is full-time, five days a week with some weekend work applicable.

Most important is a firm understanding of the core functions and values of the Sanctuary, and a strong desire to support the Sanctuary team in maintaining the highest standards of performance in all job responsibilities.

The candidates will need patience, a good sense of humour, superior communication skills, a strong sense of teamwork, and flexibility with working hours/days. Excellent health, stamina and strength, and a full clean driving licence, are essential.

Summary of Responsibilities

The ability to work well in a team, excellent communication skills and previous experience in delivering public presentations is essential. Training and conditioning experience will be advantageous. The Senior Keeper is expected to provide basic day to day management and direction within their team. As such previous relevant experience in managing a small team is required, proven leadership skills are essential and relevant qualifications would be highly regarded.


This position is focussed on the daily operations and husbandry aspects of our carnivore collection, and as such applicants must have proven carnivore husbandry experience.

ZSA is involved in a variety of conservation activities, including direct co-ordination and management of threatened species programs to field support and captive breeding for release to the wild, as well as conservation education programs. To encompass its increasing range of conservation activities, the RZSSA has developed Conservation Ark, its integrated science and conservation arm.

Aquarist - Oban SEA LIFE Centre



The Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary opens a window into a watery wonderland, teeming with amazing sea creatures of astonishing variety. Nestling amidst the pine trees on the shores of picturesque Loch Creran, the Centre combines a spectacular aquarium with a busy rescue and rehabilitation facility for both common and grey seal pups.

The Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary is Scotland's leading animal rescue centre caring for dozens of sick, injured and orphaned seal pups every year. To continue this wonderful work we are seeking an aquarist to be part of the team.

In this varied and very hands on role you’ll be key to ensuring our displays are educational as well as world class, displaying Scotland’s beautiful creatures to the highest standards. Naturally cleaning will be a big part of your role to ensure our creatures are fit and healthy but you’ll also get involved in daily feeding, presentations to our visitors and rehabilitation of any rescued seals.

Joining us means you’ll be part of the Merlin Entertainments Group, the worlds second largest entertainments operator. Despite the economic downturn we continue to grow across the world with many new acquisitions and new sites in the pipeline, so rest assured your future is secure.

The Person

The ideal person will be a keen fish-keeper, with a good knowledge of both marine and freshwater systems. Experience within the aquarium or fish farming industry would be advantageous, but not essential, as full training will be provided. More important, is the drive and enthusiasm to develop your knowledge and skills and apply them appropriately. As part of a busy and small team, you must be well organised, physically fit and capable of working with others. A flexible approach to working hours is also essential as this is not a job with 9-5 hours
