General Curator for Primate and Bird Sanctuary

Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, part of the SAASA group of Animal Sanctuaries, is based in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape. www.saasa.org.za, www.monkeyland.co.za, www.birdsofeden.co.za.

SAASA has a vacancy for an exceptional General Curator with experience of working with a variety of exotic animals. Broad taxonomic knowledge on a range of species, managed within zoological type collections will be essential, with the focus being Avian and Primates.

The candidate will be responsible for:
-supervising and training their own staff of keepers as well as scheduling work,
-ensuring safe work practices,
-providing animal care,
- monitoring animal health,
- keeping accurate records,
- maintaining cleanliness of animal areas, as well as enrichment and maintenance. 

Normal duties will include day to day husbandry, daily log reports regarding the animals, routine maintenance of physical areas and enclosures, liaising with vet regarding animal welfare protocols procedures and medication distribution to animals.  Candidate must be able to maintain the area in compliance with SAASA and Cape Nature regulations and standards, including record keeping and husbandry care. This position requires interaction with Sanctuary visitors (public), maintenance and management staff. Curator staff are required to work weekends and holidays as the animal care schedule necessitates. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license

Experience Required
Candidates with primate and avian experience is a pre requisite. (Please list specific species experience).   Candidate must have excellent team work skills and be able to communicate with co-workers and supervisors effectively.  Candidate should have a minimum of a 3 year college degree or equivalent diploma in a related field and at least 2 years of animal care experience in a reputable Zoo / similar facility.  The candidate must be able to lift, bend and twist 50 lbs, and also must be able to work in all types of weather.

Work Hours:
Work week consists of five eight hour work days per week, with two days off.
Annual leave of 21 consecutive days per annum

The sanctuary accommodates mostly big cats such as lions, leopards, tigers, jaguars and cheetah but also is home to smaller mammals such as caracal, jackal, hyena, honey badger, zebra, raccoons and others.

Expectations for the position:
To ensure effective quality control and continuous improvement in all aspects of the work and responsibilities attached to this post.

The Indianapolis Zoo is a national leader of animal conservation and is an AZA accredited institution. We’re located on a 64 acre campus in the heart of vibrant downtown Indianapolis, and a top tourist destination in the affordable and friendly Midwest. In addition to our animal exhibits, gardens, and aquarium, we support local and international animal conservation efforts. The Indianapolis Zoo is a private, 501(c)(3) organization.

The charge of the Life Sciences Department is to: 1) manage a living collection of animals and plants in support of the institution’s mission; 2) provide extraordinary husbandry care, enrichment and welfare for specimens within the living collection; 3) integrate and coordinate exchange of information and services with other departments to assure optimal care of the specimens in the living collection and achievement of the institution’s goals and objectives; 4) further the knowledge and understanding of species within the living collection; and, 5) maintain and reinforce a culture of continual improvement.

The General Curator of Life Sciences will reports to the Supervising VP of Conservation, Science, and Education, and lead a team of curatorial and support staff in the development of zoological and botanical programs that represent best practices in living collections management. The General Curator directly supervises the Curatorial staff and the Registrar.

The programs will be widely recognized for their innovation and scholarship. In that regard, it is imperative that the General Curator of Life Sciences has strong credentials in the biological, behavioral or other related disciplines. The General Curator of Life Sciences will be an active, highly visible presence in the local community in promoting the Zoo’s mission, and in developing and strengthening strategic alliances with other partners. The position works directly with other senior Zoo staff. Strong leadership, organizational, negotiation and motivational skills are required of the position.

The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

1.        Works closely with the VP of Veterinary Services, Associate Veterinarians, Nutritionist and Curators to ensure the health and well-being of the animal collection.

2.        Provides technical input and serves as a resource for the creation of policies that relate to the living collection.

3.        Develops departmental procedures in conjunction with veterinary and curatorial staff, and ensures compliance with protocols.

4.        Creates metrics for measuring the quality of animal care, advancements in animal care, and impact on animal well-being.

5.        Creates and fosters a culture of safety in all areas of Life Sciences.

6.        Provides direct supervision of curatorial staff and administrative support staff, including: hiring, scheduling, job assignment, performance review, and mentoring. Coordinates any disciplinary action with the Human Resources Department as appropriate.

7.        Develops, in conjunction with the Supervising VP an annual business plan for all areas of Life Sciences, including clearly articulated goals, objectives, action plans, timelines, resource assignments, budgets, and risk analysis.

8.        Works directly with the Finance Department in monitoring Life Sciences Department revenue and expense accounts, and ensures Life Sciences staff compliance in adhering to all protocols.

9.        With input from the Supervising VP and curatorial staff, develops, implements, and communicates a management plan for the zoological collection (including species selection, reproduction, contraception, and transactions) that optimizes the well-being of individuals and populations, as well as genetic and demographic management, and to meet the institution’s exhibition and guest experience goals.

10.        With input from the Supervising VP and the Horticulture Curator, develops, implements and communicates a management plan for the botanical collection that meet the institution’s exhibition and guest experience goals.

11.        Participates in oversight of planning, construction and maintenance projects for animal facilities and enclosures.

12.        Identifies and develops plans for gathering data needed in the care of the collection.

13.        Works with Guest Services and Marketing with respect to exhibition, visitor experience and special functions.

14.        Works closely with Institutional Advancement staff in seeking and securing external funding in support of institutional goals.

15.        Supervises the Registrar to ensure that animal record systems meet all regulatory requirements and accreditation standards, and provide integrated and accessible data. Analyzes data to identify trends in the zoological collection.

16.        Works with the Horticulture Curator to ensure that botanical records meet accreditation standards.

17.        Works with the Registrar to ensure that all Life Sciences licenses and permits are secured and maintained for all aspects of housing, exhibiting and transporting animals or plants in the Collection.

18.        Closely monitors regulatory trends that impact either the zoological or botanical collection on the international, national, state and local levels.

19.        Ensures that Life Sciences operations, policies and procedures meet or exceed the current accreditation standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Association of Museums.

20.        Ensures that the Zoo has an appropriate presence on and participation in national and international programs for the captive breeding of species, including designating staff to serve roles as institutional representatives, studbook keepers.

21.        Oversees Compliance and Regulatory requirements of the Collections division.

Physical work in the biomes may occur on occasion, including climbing while maintaining body equilibrium. Although limited, the General Curator must be able to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions.

REQUIREMENTS:

1.        Minimum of ten (10) years experience with or knowledge of similar work required.

2.        Minimum of four (4) years practical, direct work experience in a zoo (or similar animal/mammal research care organization) required.

3.        A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field (Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Wildlife Biology, or other life-science field) is required. An advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.

4.        Demonstrated strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills – both verbal and written;

5.        Demonstrated experience in setting and achieving goals, project management, and handling multiple complex tasks.

6.        Proven ability to lead, manage, and motivate subordinate employees.

7.        Proven ability to work well with a wide variety of people that in this position will include executive management, community leaders, work colleagues and direct reports, and community volunteers.

8.        Must be temperamentally suited to working with animals.

9.        Demonstrated proficiency with computers including: Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and SharePoint software.

Responsibilities:

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Veterinary science, or experience in related field.
  • 10 plus years of animal management experience with a minimum of 5 years of direct animal management in an accredited institution.
  • 8+ years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Experience managing a unionized workforce would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in sourcing, initiating, and facilitating animal transfers.

GENERAL CURATOR

The Buffalo Zoo is seeking a General Curator to oversee the care, management and exhibition of approximately 1200 animals, the supervision of 30 animal care staff, and completion of the Zoo’s master plan including construction of a new Arctic exhibit and African savannah exhibit.


The Buffalo Zoo is managed by the Zoological Society of Buffalo, a private non-profit organization, which has invested $36 million in new animal exhibits and facilities over the past twelve years. The Zoo is located just north of the City in historic Delaware Park. With affordable, attractive neighborhoods, world class museums, and a thriving arts community, Buffalo offers an amazing quality of life. Essential Functions:

Oversee the health and welfare of the Zoo’s animal collection including acquisition, disposition, collection planning, husbandry, enrichment, implementation of balanced and nutritious diets and coordination of medical treatments with veterinary staff.

Oversee all Animal Department staff including hiring, training, work scheduling, time-off scheduling, performance evaluation, disciplinary procedures, counseling, and providing on-going opportunity for professional development.

Oversee the development, organization, and function of the Zoo technical library.

Train Zoo staff on all emergency protocols. Schedule safety drills, and lead Emergency Response Team. 

Maintain inventory of emergency and personal protective equipment.

Manage aquatic life support systems. Maintain operational parameters, troubleshoot problems, develop and implement corrective actions, and provide routine maintenance.

Coordinate interdepartmental projects or needs with Maintenance, Public Relations, Development, Education, and Veterinary departments.

Direct the development and implementation of administrative systems for animal record keeping, inventory management, and annual reporting.

Oversee Zoo wide pest control program. Maintain records and coordinate with contract Certified Pest Control Operator.

Oversee the inventory, storage, and dispensing protocol for antivenin.

Assist with design of new and renovated exhibits and holding areas in accordance with USDA requirements and AZA husbandry Guidelines.

Prepare an annual department budget and monitor animal expenses. Approve all Animal Department purchases, prepare purchasing and receiving paperwork. Acquire bids, recommend contracts, and interface with vendors.

Account for, verify and approve hours worked by all Animal Department staff for biweekly payroll.

Represent the department at senior staff meetings, animal management meetings, animal welfare committee meetings, Board of Directors meetings and other in-house and external functions including professional association meetings.

Keep abreast of current field informational resources and implement change where beneficial to departmental goals.

Develop and monitor internship programs with colleges and universities.

Serve as the Chair of the Research and Conservation Committee including evaluation and support of research by staff and outside investigators. 

Oversee distribution of Cars for Conservation funds to ex-situ conservation projects. Summarize research and conservation activities in yearly report.

Serve as the Institutional Liaison for AZA conservation programs, TAGs, etc.


Qualifications:

Education (Minimum needed):

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Management, or an animal science field related to the care and management of a zoological park animal collection.


Experience (Minimum needed):

Five years supervisory experience in an accredited AZA institution (preferably an upper management position)

Diversified experience and demonstrated knowledge of husbandry and management of an exotic animal collection.


Special skills:

Working knowledge of personal computers and software applications preferred

Experience with physical restraint equipment and techniques, vehicles and related maintenance equipment.

Familiarity with design and operation of freshwater and salt-water aquatic life support systems.

Familiarity with the equipment and operation of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration systems.

Familiarity with environmental control software and operational parameters (Metasys)


Other:

Curator must be on 24-hour call. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Must have or be willing to obtain a NYS driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.

General Curator - Twycross Zoo

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world.

A position has become available for an additional Curator to run and advance the Animal Department as part of the development of the Life Sciences Directorate. This role provides a unique opportunity to join the Zoo at a time when it is undergoing an exciting period of change. You will join the other General Curator in managing the Animal Department and reporting to the Director of Life Sciences.

The successful candidate will have the vision to develop a world class animal department in conjunction with the other General Curator, Head of Veterinary Services, Director of Life Sciences and Zoo Chief Executive. The post holder will also be expected to have input to the design of new enclosures and become an active member of the Life Sciences team.

Applicants must have a proven track record at a recognized zoological collection, preferably with experience of EEP, TAG or other relevant areas of zoological conservation work and best practice, especially with primates. They must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be able to lead and motivate a team. A scientific background would also be desirable. A proactive and positive approach together with good communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern zoo is essential.

The role is full time, 40 hours per week, with weekend duties shared amongst the curators and extra hours as required. Salary commensurate with experience.

This means that conservation is at the heart of everything we do across the three Zoos Victoria campuses – Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary. Zoos Victoria is in the process of aligning our animal collection to this conservation vision, and we are looking for two people to lead the life sciences and husbandry teams at Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo during this exciting and challenging time as we transform into a conservation world-leader.



General Curator – Life Science Department Melbourne Zoo

From Western Lowland Gorillas to Lord Howe Island Stick Insects, Melbourne Zoo is a window into the world’s wildlife. Reporting to the Director Melbourne Zoo, this position is responsible for leading the Life Sciences Department and developing the Zoo’s diverse animal collection in line with Zoos Victoria’s 20 year strategy to be the world’s leading zoo-based conservation organisation.



Curator – Animals Werribee Open Range Zoo

Werribee Open Range Zoo provides visitors with a fully-immersive open range grassland landscape. The animal collection is currently focused on grassland species from Africa and Australia. Reporting to the Director Werribee Open Range Zoo, this is a strategic role that provides inspiration and leadership to the animal husbandry team to deliver a unique open range experience for the Zoo’s visitors in a way that aligns with Zoos Victoria’s 20 year strategy to be the world’s leading zoo-based conservation organisaton.



Both positions require extensive curatorial and management experience in a zoo or relevant setting. As visionary and skilled strategists, the curators will lead their respective life sciences teams in defining their zoos’ strategy, tactics and implementation of their wildlife exhibits. Responsibilities include integration of Zoos Victoria’s community conservation model of ‘connect, understand, act’ into all displays and exhibits; ensuring animal husbandry, conditioning and enrichment activities, and veterinary processes and practices are to world’s best practice; and developing the team to meet the competency frameworks and standards established for life sciences and environmental sustainability.
