Bat Keeper - Chester Zoo


Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy for four months as a Bat Keeper to join a large and busy section. The successful candidate will provide excellent animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals, ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.

The post will involve the daily care and management of a wide variety of species of including Bats, Red Pandas and small mammals. The position will also be required to assist with cover keeping on all areas of the Bats section.

They will have proven experience working with Bats, Mongoose, Pig species, Red Pandas, Porcupines and Oriental Short Clawed Otters. They will have proven experience of working in a zoo or safari park. They will have a full driving licence and proven experience in Operate conditioning.

The successful candidate will ideally be competent in the use of computers and basic software packages. They will ideally have the Zoo Animal Management, HND or degree in a Zoological related science. They will desirably have proven experience with implementing environmental enrichment and experience of working within strict SWP.

Hourly rate of pay is £6.81.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy in our Twilight Team; a diverse section including Jaguars, Bats, Spectacled bears and a variety of small mammals. Applicants should have proven zoo experience of working with Spectacled bears and also have experience with working with operant conditioning in a zoo setting.

Ideally candidates will have a higher education qualification in life sciences (min HND) and/or Animal Management Qualification but this is not essential. Previous experience in Microsoft Office packages and tractor or chain saw qualifications are desirable. The applicant must also have a full driving license and be prepared to work weekends and bank holidays in a roster system.

Salary is £14,002.56 initially, rising to £15,558.40 after satisfactory completion of the probationary period.

Keeper - California Science Center Foundation

The Keeper is responsible for the appearance and operation of all assigned exhibits and support areas, including providing proper husbandry for the herpetological, mammal, and invertebrate collections, acquiring new specimens, maintaining an inventory of the collection, and monitoring dietary habits of the animals.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the care and husbandry of non-aquatic organisms including exhibit maintenance, feeding, behavioral enrichment, record-keeping and health assessments.

  • Assists with the care and husbandry of other living collections as needed.
  • Assists in the advancement and implementation of exhibit goals by contributing to the design and management of exhibit development.
  • Assists with acquiring specimens through organization of trades/loans/purchases with other zoological institutions and when required by participation in collecting trips.
  • Assists in implementing Federal, State, and Local agency laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances, as well as AZA guidelines for eventual accreditation.
  • Assists with procurement of supplies and equipment.
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Zoology or related field required OR equivalent experience required.
  • Experience maintaining various animal exhibits, as well as possessing a strong working knowledge of herpetological, mammal and invertebrate (insect and arachnid) husbandry.
  • Knowledge of herpetological, mammal, avian, and invertebrate life of the Sonoran desert and tropical ecosystems highly desirable.
  • Experience with husbandry and display of bats strongly preferred.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds.
  • Must have (or must be vaccinated after hire date) rabies vaccination.
  • Knowledge of safe animal handling practices and maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances as applicable to possessing native and exotic wild animals desirable.
  • Knowledge of planning and acquisition of wild animal specimens desirable.
  • Working knowledge of the operational characteristics, services, and activities of a zoological program.
  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of zoo building and design highly desirable.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends and holidays.

Salary: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour per hour with excellent benefits and 14 holidays per year.
