Responsibilities & duties
In the role as animal keeper/trainer on our bird team you will be an integral part of the future development of Kolmården Wildlife Park. A big part of your role is to ensure the highest possible welfare standards for our collection of birds.
Additionally you will cross-train and work with our South American collection of mostly mammals.
Duties in this role include daily husbandry of a range of species such as falcons, hornbills and hawks as well as tapirs, Vicunas and Greater Rhea. We aim for optimal welfare for all our animals at all times and as such you will not only be responsible for ensuring exceptional hygiene and appropriate nutrition, but you will also be expected to carry out animal observations, thorough record keeping and daily husbandry training for each individual animal under your care. You will be required to research, develop, deliver and evaluate environmental enrichment that meet species-specific needs. Additional duties include coaching of students and apprentices, supporting our educational, sustainability and research departments and of course planning and executing goal-orientated training of birds using ethical methods for the purpose of shows, guest interactions and education.

Key skills & requirements
The right person for this position has at least 3 years’ experience of working with exotic animals. You must possess a thorough understanding of the science of learning that goes beyond ‘click-and-feed’ and have experience in training birds and mammals using a holistic approach that is based on positive reinforcement.
In addition to the above, we seek a person who has a positive and optimistic attitude. A problem solver who is flexible with a can-do attitude. The right candidate for this post is able to act professionally and has exceptional communication skills which they have a knack for adapting. He or she needs to be good at planning and organizing their day so that they can work effectively. Sound like you? Then lastly we want you to be physically fit and comfortable in front of large audiences.
Showmanship comes easy to you and you must be passionate about teaching our visitors about our animals and inspiring them for a life-long commitment to our planet and its wildlife. Driver’s license is advantageous and fluent in spoken and written English a requirement. You will be required to learn a basic level of Swedish in your first year of employment.

Applications are invited for an experienced keeper on the Bird Section of the Park.

The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting in the daily husbandry of the section, and will work in close co-operation with the Section Head and his staff towards the continuous development of the section. They will be expected to undertake all relevant aspects of work in a progressive animal collection. Assisting in the presentation of educational talks is essential.

A minimum of 3 years’ experience with Bird species is essential. Applicants will need to demonstrate good communication skills, be self-motivated, and able to lead and work as part of a team. Possession of a relevant animal management qualification is desired and a full driving licence is essential for this position.

Award winning Blackpool Zoo is looking for an experienced Bird Keeper to assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of the large variety of exotic birds, reptiles, small mammals and invertebrates that it currently maintains, many of which are managed as part of captive breeding programmes. The section currently maintains over 90 species of birds ranging from Cuban Flamingo, Magellanic penguin, Eastern White Pelican, Kea, African spoonbill, Scaly-sided merganser, Northern helmeted curassow, Von der Deckens hornbill and numerous other ESB/EEPs. A number of small mammals, reptiles and invertebrates including Red Panda, Dwarf Mongoose, Asian Short-clawed Otter, Rhinoceros iguana, Jamaican boa and Yacare Caiman are also maintained on this section.

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent and have a minimum of three years Bird keeping experience. Experience with incubation and bird hand-rearing techniques is not essential but
would be desirable.

We offer a competitive salary of £18,328.00 per annum and the opportunity to further your career within the zoological world.
Subsidised single occupancy (on site) accommodation may be available with this post, if required.

Blackpool Zoo is one of the UK’s most established medium sized zoos, and in recent years the zoo has gone through a rapid modernisation and development process.

ZSL London Zoo is part of the Zoological Society of London, a charity dedicated to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.
We are looking to recruit an experienced Bird Keeper to work on our Bird section. Applicants must have proven experience dealing with a variety of birds within a Zoo environment. You should also be familiar with accepted husbandry practices and standards and have an interest in breeding programmes and conservation. The ability to work as part of a team is essential as are excellent communication skills.

Bird Keeper - Johannesburg Zoo 

Purpose:
The incumbent will be responsible for the ‘incubation and rearing unit’, a large number of parrot aviaries and co-ordination of the hand rearing side of conservation projects for Ground Hornbills and Wattled Cranes. This is a job for a dynamic, enthusiastic and energetic person.

Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for all areas and tasks related to ensuring and maintaining the birds in good condition, medically, behaviorally, general wellbeing and will need to ensure an international standard of animal husbandry. Be able to act on any abnormal bird behaviours. Join and be an active member of the Wattled Crane Recovery Program and Ground Hornbill Program. Run the incubation and hand rearing unit according to protocols. The incumbent will guide, lead and carry out incubation and hand rearing, Coordinate, lead and motivate hand rearing teams and must keep up to date electronic records of all hand rearing. Ensure all equipment is well maintained and in working order. Ensure high standards of Aviculture. Assist the Curator with bird acquisitions when needed. Ensure proper record keeping within the Section. Provide behavioral enrichment for the birds in their care. Assist with nutritional evaluations of the diets. Conduct daily animal census. Be able to trap/catch birds for movement when necessary. Participate in educational activities when required. Supervise and train animal attendants and learner keepers and carry out disciplinary procedures when necessary.

Requirements:
National Diploma or Degree in Agricultural Sciences, Nature Conservation, Animal Health or a relevant qualification within the field, Must have a valid driver’s license and have access to own transport; 3+ years ‘experience within a bird department, Proven ability to incubate and hand rear birds successfully, Physical ability to do the work. The incumbent will need to be enthusiastic and a great team worker who is able to achieve goals by specific deadlines. Extra hours will be compulsory in evenings, weekends and public holidays especially during breeding season. Live food breeding, falconry experience and ability to run a mouse breeding unit would be advantageous.

We require an experienced person to assist with the feeding and cleaning of our varied collection of birds and animals. A good knowledge of the management of exotic species is essential. You should preferably have already worked in a similar environment. The successful applicant would also be expected to assist with record keeping and keeper talks. Full training will be given.

This is a full time permanent position working a 5 day week 7.30 am – 5.00 pm with weekend working on a rota basis. Commencing January 2011.

Exmoor zoo has a quality established bird collection that needs to be empathically cherished by an experienced keeper.

The intention is for the job vacancy to become the senior keeper in the section after a period of 8 to 12 months once the stock has become familiar. Particularly important will be the actual preparation of stock for breeding and monitoring the impact of the cold and wet winter seasons on stock on exhibit.

Ideally the candidate will need to be self motivated, experienced and have been involved in breeding and hand rearing a good range of species including both hard and soft bills.

Introduction, training and familiarisation will be undertaken by the head keeper and current senior bird keeper.

Initial salary dependent on experience and circumstances by negotiation and senior salary dependent on ability and work load shared in the bird department.
