We are one of the world’s largest zoo & aquarium development and operations consultants.  We help create the next generation of zoos & aquariums and currently have consulting projects all around the world.

Based in the United Arab Emirates, the Assistant Curator will be a permanent team member of zoOceanarium Group, consulting on this exciting new facility.  The position will oversee the Life Support operations, including the care, procurement, maintenance, and well being of plants & animals. They will also provide guidance on the maintenance of this world-class exhibit. The Assistant Curator will also support and train subordinate staff and promote the on-going education for the client.

Position requirements:
• Degree in wildlife/marine biology, horticulture or related field (or relevant experience)
• 2-7 years experience in similar position or senior role
• Proven aptitude for developing innovative and educational exhibits
• Experienced horticulturist, botanist and/or animal biologist, ideally with strong background in tropical rainforests
• Experience in the well being of the live flora and fauna, ideally in the rainforest environment
• Experience working with local authorities and/or working in an international environment
• Experience managing teams, ideally in a multicultural environment

Summary:
This position advances the mission of Denver Zoo by providing strong supervisory leadership within the animal care team and within the zoo team as a whole. Ensure safe and engaging exhibition, handling, feeding and husbandry of animal species at the zoo through applied management of the behavioral husbandry program.

Duties:        

Essential Functions:
•As needed, assists with curatorial and animal care staff duties during absences in the area.
•Applies practical knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of behavioral husbandry, to the needs and requirements of a variety of exotic animals sufficient to ensure the optimal exhibition, care and husbandry of those animals.
•Manages behavioral husbandry programs to meet Strategic Imperative related goals of the organization as well as those of the Animal Care Team and individual divisional goals.
•Works with Curator of Behavioral Husbandry to develop and implement behavioral husbandry staff training. Mentor and guide animal care staff towards continued professional development.
•Attends and provides support for animal training sessions
•Helps maintain and manage behavioral program framework (SPIDER model).
•Works with Curator of Behavioral Husbandry to develop area policies and procedures and provides implementation and interpretation of policies and procedures to area animal care staff.
•Recommends, implements, and coordinates with zookeepers, curators, veterinarians and other zoo personnel to effectively manage behavior programs in the animal care department.
•Orders enrichment and other supplies as needed for area.
•Provides leadership and guidance towards innovative animal husbandry that is in compliance with AZA and USDA standards.
•Implements area and zoo-wide safety standards as they apply to behavioral husbandry.
•Acts as duty officer as needed. Acts as emergency supervisor during zoo emergencies as stipulated in the emergency manual. May be a member of the emergency firearm shoot team as required.
•Professionally interfaces with other Denver Zoo team members, zoo colleagues, media partners and other professional organizations.
•Participate in zoo-wide initiatives such as committees, working groups, etc as needed or desired.
•Interviews, selects and oversees behavioral interns and their projects.
•Recognizes and addresses performance by area team members.
•Monitors and documents performance evaluations for area staff if applicable. Provides ongoing feedback regarding levels of performance in regard to the behavioral husbandry program and related behaviors.
•Provides input towards the development of departmental budgets.
•Participates in a variety of professional meetings and activities such as steering committees, advisory groups, etc. Publishes work as necessary.
•Participates in conservation, research and educational programs as requested or desired. Maintains data for behavioral husbandry research projects and assessments.
•Effectively communicates zoo-wide, division and area information to assigned staff.
•Effectively communicates within all levels of the organization. Works in a fluid and flexible manner and successfully address changes and challenges as they arise.

Additional Responsibilities:
•Works weekends, holidays as assigned and on occasion evenings, as needed.
•Performs various tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:        
•A bachelor degree in biology, psychology, zoology, wildlife management or a related field. A minimum of five years experience as a zookeeper involving behavioral husbandry training or behavioral evaluation of a variety of exotic animals in an AZA accredited institution. Comparable facilities may be considered on a case by case basis. Supervisory or lead keeper experience is recommended. Some experience may be substituted for education, education may be substituted for experience at the discretion of the Vice President for Animal Collections.
•Proven expertise in behavioral science specialty, research methods, public interaction and interpersonal skills.
•Oral and written presentation skills.
•Competency in computer skills; word processor, spread sheets, Internet and networks.

Licensure and Certification:

•Possession of a valid Colorado Class “R” Driver’s License within three months of hiring.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its’ mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

With the new ‘Islands’ site under construction, due to open in the spring, 2015 is set to be an exciting year!  This unique and innovative project will provide an immersive experience; showcasing the animals of South-east Asia and working towards a better understanding of the vital conservation work being undertaken in this region. 

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Curator of Lower Vertebrates and Invertebrates. For the right candidate, this post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide variety of species ranging from Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish to Invertebrates.  The post will involve assisting the Curator in the daily management of the three sections, acting as a deputy to ensure the highest standards of animal husbandry, welfare and exhibitory. Specific areas of responsibility will include overseeing budgets, coordinating exhibit development and coordinating training, collection planning, enrichment and welfare audits for the department.

The successful candidate will have expert knowledge of the taxonomy, biology and key conservation issues relating to these taxonomic groups. Excellent communication skills are required, both verbal and written. Experience in husbandry and design and managing animal exhibits within a themed environment are essential, along with experience of working on in situ conservation projects. Candidates will have a higher education qualification in a Zoological related science (min degree) or equivalent experience. The post may also require you to work in the zoo’s public displays and quarantine or supporting off show breeding areas.

This role will involve representing Chester Zoo at media interviews, internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas. Leadership skills and the ability to build strong working relationships across teams will be required. Excellent project management skills, the ability to prioritise and time management skills are essential.

Applicants should hold a full driving licence and be prepared to work weekends and Bank Holidays in a roster system, participating in the Duty Curator rota.

Salary is £34,019 per annum for a 40 hour working week.

A unique chance has come up to work as part of an international team at Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation in Qatar in the Arabian Gulf. AWWP maintains around 2000 animals of 90 species. The bird collection focuses mainly on Birds of Paradise and threatened psittacines, as well as several other unique avian species. The 
position does not include direct interaction with the Spix’s macaws. 

Job Description: 

The Assistant to the Bird Curator is responsible for supporting the Curator of birds in all aspects of management of the Bird Department, including: 

1. Aviary maintenance, planting and design. 
2. Supervision of Bird Keepers’ daily routine and food preparation. 
3. Management of reproductive activity, including bird socializations, artificial incubation and hand-rearing. 
4. Supervision of the daily distribution of birds’ medications and routine disease monitoring, as well as 
assistance in veterinary treatments. 
5. Record-keeping, data collection and data encoding. 
6. Preparation of guidelines, protocols and working schedules for Bird Department personnel. 
7. Administration and record-keeping of Bird Department human resources. 
8. Management of food stocks and in-house insect production. 

Applicants for the position must fulfill the following requirements: 

1. At least 3 years experience in captive bird husbandry, preferably with passerines and/or psittacines. 
2. A degree in zoology, ornithology or another related field is preferred. 
3. Extensive knowledge of bird husbandry, nutrition, disease, ecology and behaviour. 
4. Expertise in artificial incubation and hand-rearing techniques. 
5. Experience with record-keeping and data collection. 
6. Basic computer skills (Word, Excel and internet as a minimum, knowledge of ISIS and ZIMS would be 
an advantage). 
7. High level capability in oral and written English. 
8. Flexibility in working hours and an ability to work in a multi-cultural environment. 

Working conditions: 
 Initial contract is for 2 years; starting with a probationary period of 3 months. 
 Work schedule is based on 6 days / 48 hours per week. 
 Flexible working hours depending on the season. 
 1month paid holiday per year excluding official holidays in Qatar. 
 One paid return economy ticket to “home-airport” per year; Ticket at beginning and end of employment 
are also included. 
 Salary depends on experience and highest degree obtained.

General Information:
Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) is located in Al Shahaniya, State of Qatar is a private breeding centre for threatened animal species. AWWP houses approximately 2100 animals of 95 different species, some of them are critically endangered like the Spix’s and Lear’s macaw, Queen of Bavaria conure, Addra gazelle, Erlanger’s gazelle and the Addax antelope. Some species at AWWP are kept no where else in captivity. An international team of veterinarians, curators, biologists and keepers (around 45 staff) run the preservation.

General Job Description for the Assistant Curator of Mammals:

You will report directly to the Curator of Mammal and will care for the Mammal and Reptile collection, which includes approx 1500 animals of 40 species; mainly antilopinae, caprinae, neotraginae, equidae, felidae, primates, testudinidae.

The duties are:
- Assistance in all fields of curatorial work.
- Mammal data administration and encoding.
- Instructing and supervising junior staff/ keepers.
- Organizing all daily routines within the respective sections.
- Coordination of stock-take of food and tools.
- Animal breeding management.
- Animal monitoring.
- Keeper replacements.
- Nursery work.
- Enclosure maintenance, planting and design.
- Running a live-food animal unit, where rodents and rabbits are being bred for food for other animals.
- Involvement in scientific work and projects related to mammals.
- Participation in wildlife conservation projects.
The successful candidate must fulfill the following requirements:
- Good communication skills and fluency in English both spoken and written.
- Experience in office administration, good computer skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and within a motivated team.
- Flexibility and good organizational skills.
- Experience in animal husbandry, nutrition, ecology and behaviour.
- Valid driving license.
- Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
- Experience working with mammal species commonly kept in zoological institutions.

Salary £20,913 per annum

Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Curator for Mammals. Reporting to the Senior Curator of Animals, this is a hands-on position with the post holder being responsible for the daily care and supervision of the Zoo’s mammal collection as well as supervising the staff involved with their care. There will also be some Curatorial duties as directed by the Senior Curator of Animals.

The position is to cover maternity leave working 80 hours per fortnight as part of the departmental 14 day rota.

The successful applicant will have excellent knowledge of mammal husbandry and captive breeding protocols and will lead a 13 person team. This team has overall responsibility for the daily care of the Zoo’s varied collection of mammals.

The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science and hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (previously known as ANCMZA) or its equivalent. The ability to supervise staff is essential and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is desirable.

Are you passionate about saving wildlife and conserving our environment? Healesville Sanctuary is seeking a positive and energetic leader to join our team and help make a tangible impact to saving wildlife and wild places, whilst leading a great team of people!

The Threatened Species Team focuses on research and captive breeding programs as part of State and National Recovery efforts for species faced with the threat of extinction in the wild. Current programs include: Mountain Pygmy Possum, Tasmanian Devil, Spotted Tree Frog, Corroboree Frog, Helmeted Honeyeater and Orange-bellied Parrot.

Reporting to the Curator of Life Sciences, the Assistant Curator – Threatened Species is responsible for leadership of a team including; supervision and management of animal keeping staff, maintaining relevant assets, and ensuring a high standard of health and welfare for wildlife in the collection. The position is responsible for developing and implementing appropriate research and requires close collaboration with State and Federal Recovery Teams, universities and non-government organizations.

Suitably qualified in zoology, veterinary or other life sciences field, you will posses experience leading people, hands-on threatened species recovery and expertise in a zoo or similar environment.

Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Curator for Invertebrates. This is a hands-on position with the post holder being responsible for the daily care of the Zoo’s invertebrate collection as well as carrying out Curatorial duties for Bug World and Butterfly Forest.

The successful applicant will have excellent knowledge of invertebrate husbandry and captive breeding and will become part of an 11 person team. This team has overall responsibility for the daily care of the Zoo’s collection of fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Some husbandry experience of one of the other taxa mentioned here would be an advantage although is not essential.

The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science and hold the City and Guilds Certificate in Zoo Animal Management (or equivalent). The ability to supervise staff and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is also desirable.

The successful applicant will have excellent knowledge of fish husbandry and captive breeding and will become part of a 10 person team responsible for the daily care of the Zoo’s collection of fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Some husbandry experience of one of the other taxa mentioned here would be an advantage although is not essential.

The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science and hold the City & Guilds Certificate in Zoo Animal Management (or equivalent). The ability to supervise staff and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is also desirable.
