Position Key Accountabilities: 

The Manager, Animal Care (Curator) is responsible for the daily management of the animals, personnel, facilities and programs of the area assigned. The Manager, Animal Care (Curator) oversees a specific zone within the zoo and will be required to manage areas that may include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrates.  

What You Will Do: 

  • Interview and train new employees 
  • Plan, assign, and direct work 
  • Appraise employee performance 
  • Participate in the employee recognition program 
  • Address complaints and resolve problems 
  • Ensure compliance with union contract 
  • Direct volunteers 
  • Administer discipline and comply with the collective agreement, zoo policies, and/or relevant legislation in the management of staff 
  • Manage animal care employees, establish work and set schedules 
  • Expected to interact with staff daily on section and have the ability to do husbandry work if needed for training purposes 
  • Expected to assist and oversee animal moves, shipments, medical procedures, restraining, and capturing animals 
  • Author, edit, promote, and enforce guidelines, policies, and standards. 
  • Identify need for and initiate new guidelines 
  • Ensure accurate, current records are kept on each animal and exhibit 
  • Write, update, and review animal management/husbandry protocols ensuring husbandry standards are met 
  • Use existing knowledge of animal care and welfare to guide management of various species and individual animals in existing and new habitats and scenarios 
  • Work with other departments to help develop, plan, and implement educational programs, publicity, graphics, construction projects, general maintenance, and other support services for the section 
  • Assist in planning and implementation of special projects, minor renovations, and improvements in assigned zone; initiate necessary requests for maintenance and horticultural work within assigned zone 
  • Act as a zone manager in other areas when other managers are away 
  • Participate in emergency response as a member of the emergency response team and potentially the firearms response team 
  • Work as a member of the team to provide best possible animal care for the entire zoo 
  • Complete administrative tasks and other duties as assigned including maintaining and managing a budget

The Calgary Zoo Animal Care Department is seeking a highly engaged and professional individual to fill the full-time position of Assistant Curator- Conservation.

Key Accountabilities
As the Assistant Curator - Conservation you will provide on-site management, cooperative leadership, and animal care services at the Wildlife Conservation Centre (WCC).

What You Will Do:

  • Organize staff scheduling and assign daily tasks, ensuring resources are allocated most efficiently
  • Train and lead paid and unpaid animal care staff
  •  Perform day-to-day animal care duties as required
  • Conduct tours and interviews as directed
  • Ensure all work areas and equipment are up to or above standards for functionality and cleanliness
  • Assist in coordination and implementation of special projects, minor renovations, and improvements as approved
  •  Update animal management and husbandry protocols related to WCC animal care and operations, ensuring stakeholder input is represented where appropriate
  • Oversee animal handling events, including animal shipments
  • Employee performance management for the purpose of  guiding and directing keeper staff on a daily basis, addressing complaints, resolving problems or escalating to the general curator as appropriate, cooperative performance appraisals
  • Liaise with the Conservation Centre Operations Supervisor, veterinarians, and other department representatives as required
  • There is an expectation to work weekends, holidays and potentially evening and on-call services
  •  Other projects as required

$68,000 - $71,000 a year

Animal Care Solutions is seeking two experienced full-time Animal Care Attendants (Level 3) to provide animal care and support services at the Calgary Zoo in the Eurasia section. Species within this section will include; Giant Panda, Bactrian Camels, Komodo Dragons, Amur Tigers, Red Panda’s, Snow Leopards, Japanese Macaques among others. The successful candidate will join a team of passionate and experienced individuals to provide animal care services to the animal collection of the Calgary Zoo.

Qualifications:

– A Bachelors degree in Zoology (or equivalent) or compensating experience

– Or, a Registered Animal Health Technologist

– Expected to have a superior knowledge in the care of zoological and wildlife species

– A minimum of eight years of experience working in animal care in a zoo

– Must have experience working with dangerous animals

– Experience caring for species mentioned above would be a strong asset

– A valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers licence

– Must be able to meet the specific requirements of the position

– Negative tuberculosis exposure testing

– Required vaccinations

– Ability to work inside and outside

– Ability to lift 25kg’s

The successful candidate will provide animal care services at the Calgary Zoo’s Eurasia section with the potential to fill in as needed in other areas. The tasks of the position may include but will not be limited to;

– Observation of assigned animals with routine objective reporting in animal records

– Supervision of junior staff to ensure animal care standards and safety standards are upheld

– Provide animal diets in an appropriate and timely manner

– Follow and implementation of protocols on animal feeding and enrichment

– Ensure all work areas and equipment are up to and above standards for functionality and cleanliness

– Ensure all animal areas are clean, maintained and perform animal husbandry procedures

– There is an expectation to work weekends, holidays and potentially evening and on call services

– Provide additional services as required

Compensation:

– $68,000 – $71,000/year (Dependent on experience and accreditations)

Animal Care Solutions is seeking an experienced full-time Animal Care Supervisor to provide animal care services at the Calgary Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Centre. This is an exciting opportunity to take a hands-on lead with the Zoo’s reintroduction breeding programs. Current species include; Whooping Crane, Vancouver Island Marmot, Greater Sage Grouse, Burrowing Owl and Przewalski’s Wild Horse with more programs planned for the future. The Wildlife Conservation Centre is also home to the Zoo’s ungulate quarantine facility and backup ungulate holding. The successful candidate will work with the area curator to lead a team of passionate and experienced individuals save species from extinction by providing animal care services to the animal collection of the Calgary Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Centre.

Qualifications:

– A Bachelors degree in Zoology (or equivalent) or compensating experience o Or, a Registered Animal Health Technologist

– Expected to have a superior knowledge in the care of zoological and wildlife species

– A minimum of eight years of experience working in animal care in a zoo

Must have experience working with a variety of taxa

– Experience caring for species mentioned above or with any breed for release program would be a strong asset

– Strong verbal and written communication skills

– Experience leading a team in a positive work environment would be a strong asset

– A valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers licence

– Must be able to meet the specific requirements of the position

– Negative tuberculosis exposure testing

– Required vaccinations

– Ability to work inside and outside year round

– A working knowledge of farm equipment, tools and small maintenance repairs an asset

– Ability to lift 25kg’s

The successful candidate will provide animal care services at the Calgary Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Centre with the potential to fill in as needed in other areas. The tasks of the position may include but will not be limited to;

– Organizing staff scheduling and assigning daily tasks, ensuring resources are allocated most efficiently

– Participate in reintroduction breeding programs including recommendations on continuous improvement and future growth

– Observation of assigned animals closely, routinely and objectively report on animal behaviour, health and welfare

– Provide animal diets in an appropriate and timely manner

– Maintain complete records on animals attended to

– Contribute to, follow and implement animal husbandry protocols

– Conduct tours and interviews as directed

– Ensure all work areas and equipment are up to or above standards for functionality and cleanliness

– Ensure all animal areas are clean, maintained and perform animal husbandry procedures

– There is an expectation to work weekends, holidays and potentially evening and on call services

– Provide additional services as required

Compensation:

– $70,000-$75,000/year (Dependent on experience and accreditations)

The position has the possibility of deployment to various areas of the Calgary Zoo. The successful candidate will join a team of passionate and experienced individuals to provide animal care services to the animal collection of the Calgary Zoo.

Qualifications:

–          A Bachelors degree in Zoology (or equivalent) or compensating experience

o   Or, a Registered Animal Health Technologist

–          Expected to have a superior knowledge in the care of zoological and wildlife species

o   Experience working in at least four of the following areas: fish, amphibians, birds, primates, carnivores, hoof stock

–          A minimum of eight years of experience working in animal care in a zoo

o   Must have experience working with dangerous animals

–          A valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers licence

–          Must be able to meet the specific requirements of the position

–          Negative tuberculosis exposure testing

–          Required vaccinations

–          Ability to work inside and outside and in extreme temperatures

–          Ability to lift 25kg’s

The successful candidate will provide animal care services at the Calgary Zoo the tasks of the position may include but will not be limited to;

–          Observation of assigned animals with routine objective reporting in animal records

–          Provide prescribed animal diets in an appropriate and timely manner

–          Propose and track behavioural training and enrichment for collection animals

–          Follow and implementation of protocols on all aspect of animal care

–          Ensure all work areas, exhibit areas and equipment are up to and above standards for functionality and cleanliness

–          Ensure all animal areas are clean, maintained and perform animal husbandry procedures

–          There is an expectation to work weekends, holidays and potentially evening and on call services

–          Provide additional services as required
