Wellington Zoo is a treasure, housing significant populations of animals, plants and people who are passionate about conservation, education and recreation. Some 180,000 people visit the Zoo each year. The Zoo conserves precious species and raises awareness of the human contribution to both the destruction and sustainability of ecosystems.



Under the management of the Wellington Zoo Trust, the Zoo is heading in new and exciting directions. The Trust’s vision is for the Zoo to be a magical place of learning and fun, bringing animals in their environments and people who visit together.



We are looking for a permanent full time Keeper who would like to provide daily care to our Collection and is willing to work on any section as required.



The successful applicant will have:



A National Certificate in Captive Wild Animals or equivalent qualification.

Experience in captive animal keeping and daily husbandry.

Knowledge of behavioural and environmental enrichment techniques.

The ability to work with limited supervision, solve problems and work well in a team environment.

The ability to work on a roster that includes weekends and public holidays.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

We have an opportunity for a team player with excellent communication and relationship management skills to be part of our Life Sciences team responsible for the integrated operational and animal management functions and activities for the section which includes fascinating animals such as tuatara, kiwis and keas.

As we move forward under a new management structure, we are looking for someone to be a positive role model to others through demonstrated behaviours. In this role you will be responsible for the development of staff through identification of individual and team training needs, development and implementation of appropriate development activities, effective communication, motivation and coaching to ensure maximum potential.

The position is full time (40 hours per week on a 5 day a week roster including Saturdays and Sundays).

So, if you can demonstrate:

a comprehensive knowledge of conservation issues and the role of the modern Zoo

an ability to listen, learn, observe and interpret animal behaviour

excellent communication skills both oral and written

skills in negotiation, influencing, building and maintaining effective working relationships

In this role, you will be required to carry out duties under the supervision of a Team Leader, enabling greater opportunities and involvement with daily husbandry, husbandry training, educational programs, encounters and presentations.

The position is full time (40 hours per week on a 5 day a week roster including Saturdays and Sundays).

a comprehensive knowledge of conservation issues and the role of the modern Zoo
