Deputy Team Leader : Great Apes

Twycross Zoo is at a very exciting stage of development with the first phase of a 20 year masterplan already underway. The plan will see the zoo developing new habitats for a refreshed animal collection starting with Gibbon Forest in 2016.

We currently have a vacancy for a Deputy Team Leader to work on our Great Apes section. This area manages all four species of great ape: gorilla, chimpanzee, orangutan and bonobo.

Key Responsibilities:
· A hands-on role, working on the section
· Supervising all areas of daily animal husbandry
· Developing, supervising and training staff
· Taking administrative responsibility alongside other senior staff within the Great Apes section

Key Skills & Requirements:
· High performing and enthusiastic
· Proven track record of working with Great Apes
· Substantial experience of zoological animal management, with at least 8 years’ relevant experience
· Able to demonstrate good working knowledge of the natural history and management of large mammals
· Good team worker with positive outlook
· Excellent communication and IT skills
· Committed to continued professional development of yourself and others
· An animal related qualification such as ANCMZA or DZMAA

The role is on a permanent contract and is a full time position (working on average 5 days out of 7) , including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly with and 31 days paid holiday per annum (pro-rata). Uniform is also provided

However, the successful candidate was unable to take up the post and we are, therefore, re-advertising. Please note, previous applicants need not re-apply Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), a World Primate Centre - holds a large variety  of primates, including all 4 types of great ape (gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobo, orang-utan) plus a range of other species. We have impressive breeding records for many of these species and recent changes to husbandry practices have enabled more natural groupings and enclosure modifications. We have more to do!

We are going through an exciting period of change as this zoo develops and so are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward. 

Currently we have a vacancy for an Animal Keeper on the Great Apes section. The section manages all the great ape taxa. This is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, training and record keeping; as well as interacting with the zoo visitors and assisting with the training and development of staff.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, high performing individual with a proven track record in zoo animal management. You will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a keeper, preferably at least half of which is with great apes. 

You will also be able to demonstrate a substantial working knowledge of the natural history and management of key species. You must be a good team worker with a positive outlook and excellent communication skills and be committed to continued professional development of yourself and other staff. An animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous. 

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform and 31 days holiday per annum.

We are going through an exciting period of change as this zoo develops and so are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

We currently have a vacancy for a Deputy Section Head on the Great Ape section. The section manages all the Great Ape groups including chimpanzees, gorillas, orang- utans and the only bonobo group in the United Kingdom. This is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry, supervising and training staff, and deputising in the Section Head’s absence.

We are seeking a high performing individual with a proven track record in zoo animal management. You will have a minimum of 5 years experience as a keeper and demonstrate a substantial working knowledge of the natural history and management of great apes. You must be committed to continued professional development of yourself and other staff. Supervisory experience as well as an animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform, 31 days holiday, 5% employer’s pension contribution.
