I have an incredible opportunity working at Auckland Zoo for an accomplished Animal Trainer-Presenter to join the Animal Experiences Team.

This exciting role connects our visitors with animals and ignites a passion for wildlife and conservation through free-flight displays and up-close encounters. The day to day responsibilities include communicating Auckland Zoo’s conservation messages in a fun and entertaining way, developing, and implementing animal training plans and maintaining high animal welfare standards by providing exemplary care.

This is a truly exciting time to be part of an organisation that aims to focus the Zoo's resources to benefit conservation, and provide exciting visitor experiences, which inspire and empower people to take positive action for wildlife and the environment.

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

We are currently seeking an Ungulates keeper to join the Zoo's Animal Care & Conservation team. You will work as part of a team responsible for the daily husbandry and management of the Zoo's ungulate collection providing best practice husbandry, contributing to our knowledge of these species through research and publication, and delivering world-class animal habitats and meaningful encounters to our 700,000 annual visitors.

This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in the care and management of the Zoo's ungulates section, to actively contribute to conservation both in the zoo and in the wild, and to work with a wide variety of ungulates species including white rhinoceros, giraffe, zebra, nyala, waterbuck and ostrich.

He kōrero mōu: About you

The successful candidate will have:

  • Strong interpersonal skills, ensuring a good team fit on a busy and technically demanding section.
  • Tertiary qualification in zoology/biology/conservation.
  • Proven experience and a foundational understanding of exotic ungulates best practise husbandry covering a broad range of relevant taxa.
  • Experience in animal training and conditioning and behavioural enrichment.
  • A sound understanding of the five domains of animal welfare and their relevance in a modern zoo.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver excellent customer service including keeper talks and behind the scenes tours.
  • Commitment to and understanding of the World Zoo Conservation Strategy 2015.
  • Strong organisational skills, aptitude for creative problem-solving and a ‘can-do' attitude.

If you have proven ungulates husbandry experience, a desire to deliver tangible conservation outcomes and relish the opportunity to positively contribute to the work of a devoted team of zoo professionals, then this is the opportunity for you. High priorities for this position include delivering the highest standards in husbandry and welfare, actively contributing to a cohesive team culture, and demonstrating adaptability within an ambitious and dynamic section environment.

wētāpunga and Archey's frog. The section maintains a growing number of ‘exotic’ species, soon to be complimented by a deeply immersive Southeast Asian ‘Swamp Forest’ tropical dome, which will be home to Sunda gharial, freshwater turtles, tortoises and thousands of fish. The exciting challenges of bringing this complex project to life is just ahead.

Working under the Team Leader of Ectotherms, the primary focus of the role is to help deliver the care of the Zoo's reptiles, amphibians, fish & invertebrates, providing best practice husbandry, contributing to our knowledge of these species through research and publication, and delivering world-class animal habitats and meaningful encounters to our 700,000 annual visitors. You will also help to develop and deliver a portfolio of related conservation programs in the field.

This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in the development of the Zoo's ectotherm section, to actively contribute to conservation both in the zoo and in the field, and to work with some of the world's most extraordinary ectotherms including unique New Zealand taonga like tuatara, wētāpunga and Archey's frog. We are currently seeking a Team Leader Ectotherms  As a key member of the Zoo's Animal Care & Conservation team, the Team Leader's role is to ensure that the staff, facilities and animals associated with the section are managed to achieve excellence. Working under the Curator of Ectotherms, the primary focus of the advertised role is to oversee the care of the Zoo's reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates, providing best practice husbandry, contributing to our knowledge of these species through research and publication, and delivering world-class animal habitats and meaningful encounters to our 700,000 annual visitors. You will also help to identify, develop and deliver a portfolio of related conservation programs in the field.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in the development of the Zoo's ectotherm section, to actively contribute to conservation both in the zoo and in the field, and to work with some of the world's most extraordinary ectotherms including  tuatara, wetapunga and Archey's frog. An ambitious capital development programme was recently initiated, one which will deliver new infrastructure across the zoo and a remarkable transformation to much of the site – this is our #FutureZoo.

As a Primates Keeper, you will work as part of a team responsible for the daily husbandry and management of our primates including great apes.

 

He kōrero mōu: About you

We are looking for someone who is adaptable and open minded with a desire to push themselves to benefit conservation and animal welfare. You will have proven experience in the management of primates, including great apes and a recognised qualification in captive animal management and/or zoology/biology. You ideally will have a minimum of 3 years' experience working with primates, along with an excellent understanding of the natural history of primates.

 

You will also have:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the conservation of species and ecosystems.
  • Have a track record of innovative husbandry including development of training and enrichment programmes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to positively contribute to a team environment.
  • Driver's licence and the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
  • A thorough understanding of the role nutrition plays in the welfare of zoo animals.
  • An in-depth understanding of the 5 domains of animal welfare
