ASSISTANT HEAD KEEPER






ASSISTANT HEAD KEEPER

Manor House Wildlife Park are looking to recruit an experienced animal keeper to assist the current Head keeper and supervise in their absence. The successful applicant will be expected to lead a small team of staff and oversee the day to day management of the diverse animal collection, ensuring the highest standards of animal care and welfare at all times. Taxa include primates, Small and large Hoofstock (including rhino), small mammals, marsupials and some birds and reptiles.

With some new and exciting developments planned over the next few years the Assistant Head keeper will be expected to be involved in all aspects of these projects including enclosure design, collection planning, health and safety, working protocols and day to day operations. This is a supervisory role and there will be office time and administrative work required.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

 • Ensure the highest standards of animal husbandry and welfare at all times including implementing training and enrichment programmes, monitoring health, researching nutritional needs and excellent enclosure presentation.
• Liaise with the veterinary team as and when needed and administer medication when appropriate in the absence of an on-site vet.
• Supervise staff in the absence of the Head keeper which will include managing rotas and holidays, training new and existing staff to the required standards, organising working protocols and procedures and providing feedback on performance.
• Assist in the management and implementation of all aspects of Health and Safety including working protocols, risk assessments and manual handling.
• Assist in providing Firearms cover as and when needed.
• Manage animal records, produce reports and put forward proposals.
• Ensure the highest of standards of visitor experience through exceptional customer services and care.

The successful candidate will need to have worked in a Zoo environment for at least 7 years, have the Diploma in the Management of Zoo animals and Aquaria (DMZAA) or an equivalent qualification and have some previous experience supervising staff.

With the completion of a new big cat facility in the near future experience working with big cats is essential to this position. The candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent safe working practices with big cats and have knowledge of all aspects of their care and husbandry. Experience with the Taxa listed above would also be beneficial and in particular with Rhino.

A full driving licence is essential and candidates should also be in the possession of a Firearms licence or at least in a position to apply for one.

The successful applicant will be computer literate with an excellent understanding of MS word and working knowledge of ZIMS would be desirable.

Working hours vary dependant on time of year with longer shifts during the summer period and shorter days throughout winter. Staff are salaried so monthly wages are not affected by varying hours.

Salary will be dependent on experience and will include other company benefits.

Wildwood Trust is looking for an experienced animal keeper for this senior position with responsibility to support the head keeper in managing the Keeper team.
The post holder will be required to support the Head Keeper in co-ordinating the keeper team and giving the highest standards of care to our collection of British animals. The post holder will also be responsible for meeting all zoo legislation, keeping our records up to date and exceeding health and safety requirements.

Hours:
Average of 37.5 hours over 5 days, involving weekend, bank holiday work and evening work during some events.

Duties to include:
  • The smooth running of a busy keeper team.
  • Maintaining Wildwood’s policies, procedures and systems and to ensure that the Wildwood collection is looked after to the highest standard. 
  • Assisting in animal acquisitions, transfers, imports and exports and managing the breeding of animals to maintain the integrity of Wildwood’s collection. 
  • Management of the day to day maintenance of exhibits to meet the high standards expected by our visitors. 
  • Planning and implementing a maintenance schedule for animal exhibits. 
  • Designing and building exhibits to provide the highest standards of animal care and efficiency of operations. 
  • Keeping animal records to meet all zoo legislation. 
  • Providing engaging events and talks for our visitors. 
  • You will be required to look after animals in our captive breeding programme and to liaise and plan the work of the team to carry out our conservation and contract work.


Key skills required for the role:
  • Experience of working with captive animals and their husbandry ideally within a zoo environment at a senior level is essential.
  • Experience of captive breeding and animal care
  • Experience of conservation reintroduction projects
  • Experience of health and safety systems
  • Familiarity with running of a zoological collection
  • Experience in developing and leading teams
  • Administrative experience in relation to zoological records

We are looking for a an experienced Senior animal keeper to join our busy team at Wildwood.

This role will suite a fit, practical person who is highly motivated and can work outdoors during all weathers doing a physically demanding job.

Your primary focus will be the care of wildwood’s unique collection of British wildlife and assisting the Head Keeper in managing our team of keeper staff.

Duties to include:

Assisting in the overall management of the Wildwood animal collection
Adminstration duties to ensure Wildwood complies with zoo legislation
Animal aquistion and transfers, imports and exports
Monitoring health issues & liaising with the Wildwood vets
Sourcing  & allocating resources for enclosure projects
Construction of enclosures
General housekeeping

As a visitor centre Wildwood is dedicated to educating our visitors about British wildlife and Wildwood’s conservation work. To support this your duties will include:
Helping to educate the public through talks and demonstrations about our animals
Assisting with our conservation projects
Helping to promote wildlife conservation
Helping to run events at the park
Engaging and assisting visitors around the park

About the role:

The successful candidate will assist the Head Keeper in leading and inspiring our existing team of 20 keepers, overseeing the care and management of our diverse collection of animals. Taxa include primates, felids, canids, large hoofstock (including giraffe), small mammals and birds.

Flexibility is key to the successful operation of the animal department as a whole. The Assistant Head Keeper is expected to provide cover and assistance to the Head Keeper and other members of the senior ZAM team in managing the department, including providing cover for holidays and other time off. This is a supervisory role and there is a significant amount of administrative work involved.

Main Key Objectives:

Provide the highest level of husbandry according to the needs and requirements of the animals in your care

Support the Head Keeper as and when required.

Assist in the supervision, motivation and development of staff responsible to the role to address staff learning and development needs and promote a positive working environment.

Assist in providing firearms cover as and when required.

Assist in promoting and participate in interdepartmental co-operation at operating level.

Continuously develop yourself through appropriate learning and development activities as agreed by line management in order to deliver excellence.

Undertake other tasks as required by your line management.

To be computer literate to an acceptable level to assist in the smooth running of the department.

To be able to carry out or assist in the interview process for staff up to the level of Qualified Keeper Level 1,2 & 3.

Ensure a positive impression of yourself and the company is presented to all customers (internal and external) at all times to reflect the quality of the organisation.

Monitor compliance within the department of policies and procedures in relation to administration and health & safety, to ensure they are appropriately followed by the public and colleagues at all times.

About you:

You are expected to have worked full time in a zoo environment for at least 7 years. You will currently be working in a supervisory position. You will possess the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals (ANCMZA) or Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) and have extensive experience with the majority of the taxa identified above. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and a proven ability to motivate and manage staff reporting to this position.

You will have a thorough understanding and interest in modern zoo animal management, including animal enrichment and training using positive operant conditioning methods.

A full driving licence is essential; candidates should also be in possession of a firearms licence or be in a position to acquire such a licence.

You will be computer literate with an excellent understanding of Microsoft Word and ZIMS. A working knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint are desirable.

About us:

Based at Banham Zoo you will work an average 40 hour week with alternate weekends off, however, working hours will be flexible and include bank holidays and occasional evenings.

Some additional weekend cover will be required to provide holiday cover.

As we move forward under a new departmental management structure, we are looking for someone to be a positive role model to others through demonstrated behaviors. You will need to be able to manage and prioritise a diverse workload and have problem solving skills. 

As well as being responsible for your area, you will also be part of the Zoo Senior Animal Management Team where not only will you assist and deputise for the Head Keeper and Animal Manager but will also have a very active role in developing and moving forward the animal department within its framework aims and objectives in this new and exciting period within Blackpool Zoo’s history.

The zoo currently maintains over 200 species of animals including key species such as Asian Elephant, Giraffe, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Amur Tiger, Bornean Orang-utan, Western Lowland Gorilla, Cuban Flamingo, Mallagenic Penguin along with a number of EEP & ESB programs.

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic and reliable. A minimum of 6 years zoo keeping experience, plus proven people management skills and the DMZAA (previously known as ANCMZA) course, or equivalent, are essential.

Assistant head keeper - Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park


Applicant will report to the head keeper and owner, must be knowledgeable in mammals, birds, sea lions, penguins, primates, lions, wallabies, fish, birds of prey, etc.
Must have relevant experience and qualifications in Animal Management and Husbandry.

Must be able to carry out the head keeper's instructions, to supervise staff and organise work rotas, to stand in when head keeper is away, to report to head keeper, and to cover sections as and where necessary.
