ZSL has a new opportunity for a Curator of Mammals to work in collaboration with the second Curator of Mammals to lead the strategic and operational management of mammal species at ZSL.  The curatorial team lead the strategic management of species at ZSL including both ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade zoo. Species planning is coordinated through a multiyear plan which provides a strategic, objective, and documented evaluation of the species with a clear explanation for why we keep each species within ZSL’s three priority areas: Wildlife & People, Wildlife Back from the Brink, and Wildlife Health. The curatorial team undertake a leading role in implementing the species plan, including species recovery through in-situ and ex-situ conservation actions, undertaken in conjunction with all ZSL directorates and through collaborative working with internal and external expertise.

Role Profile

ZSL is seeking a Senior Keeper to work on the Primate section at London Zoo. The role will involve full aspect husbandry of Gorillas, Gibbons and Monkeys. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver high standards of husbandry, safety, observations, communication and record keeping. Previous Gorilla keeping experience will be a distinct advantage. Experience of dealing with the public is essential, together with the ability to work effectively within a team. Working hours are 37.5 per week, worked within a roster which includes regular weekends so flexibility regarding hours is crucial.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work in a responsible, safe and efficient manor around high security animals
  • Observe the behaviour, health and security of animals and report any problems to the Team Leader or manager including defects or repairs required to enclosures and relevant departments required to support work needed
  • Assist & develop training and enrichment programs on a regular basis
  • Cleaning and maintaining of exhibits and other designated areas
  • Assist with the preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures
  • Communicate efficiently with public to increase public satisfaction and support the ZSL mission

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have:

  • Proven practical experience of animal management with a range of zoo animals
  • Proven experience working with Primates and preferably Gorillas
  • Passion to work on evolving husbandry management within zoological collections to include positive re-enforcement training for behavioural management and varied methods of enrichment for a range of species.
  • Knowledge of techniques used to handle specific animals should veterinary procedures be required.
  • Be able to demonstrate initiative and a pro-active approach to completing tasks beneficial to the section/department without always waiting to be asked.
  • Have a qualification in a relevant field at university level and/or diploma in the DZMAA Keeper’s course or equivalent work experience.
  • Be reliable, have good time-keeping and attendance record and able to demonstrate leadership and professionalism.

Please note: We are looking for candidates to start as soon as possible. Flexible working is required for this position which will include working alternate weekends and bank holidays. Daily finish times might change with short notice.

Overview of Role:
An opening has arisen for a Senior/Lead Animal Demonstration Keeper in our Animal Activities section at ZSL London Zoo. The successful candidate will work alongside the Team Leader and Deputy Team Leader in managing the daily running and production of the displays.  The focus of the displays is on natural behaviour, education, the promotion of conservation and the wider work of ZSL; the successful candidate will be expected to develop the displays with these points in mind.
The role will also involve the day to day husbandry of a large and diverse collection of species, focussing on animal welfare, exhibit design, record keeping and ensuring that exhibits are maintained to the highest standards.
The successful candidate will:

•        Be able to demonstrate an in depth knowledge of modern Animal training techniques.
•        Have extensive presenting experience with live Animal demonstrations.
•        Have extensive practical experience of training both Birds and Mammals.
•        Have strong attention to detail and the ability to clearly convey instruction.
•        Be able to use Microsoft software including Outlook, Excel and Word.
•        Have a qualification in a relevant field at university level and/or diploma in the DZMAA Keeper’s course or equivalent work experience.
•        Be reliable and have good time-keeping and attendance record and able to demonstrate leadership and professionalism.
•        Be a positive influence and work well in a team.
•        Work with energy and enthusiasm.
•        Be able to demonstrate an in depth knowledge of current husbandry practices.

The successful candidate will also be expected to:
•        Observe the behaviour, health and security of animals and report any problems to the Team Leader.
•        Assist with the preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures.
•        Adhere to Health and Safety policy.
•        Train and mentor junior staff.
•        Write scripts and consider show production.

Role Profile:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Trainer/Presenter on the Animal Activities section at ZSL London Zoo. The Animal Activities section is responsible for the delivery of a number of live animal displays as well as the running of the visitor focused Animal Adventure exhibit.

This position will mainly involve supporting the Team Leader and Lead keeper in the daily running and delivery of the educational live animal displays. In addition to this the candidate will be expected to help train a variety of animals for the displays, devise new routines and assist with script writing.

 

The successful candidate will also be expected to:
  • Observe the behaviour, health and security of animals and report any problems to the Team Leader or manager including defects or repairs required to enclosures and relevant departments required to support work needed.
  • Assist with the preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures.
  • Adhere to the highest industry standards of zoo husbandry and welfare.
The successful candidate will:
  • Have extensive presenting experience with live Animal demonstrations.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of training techniques.
  • Have extensive practical experience of training both Birds and Mammals.
  • Have strong attention to detail and the ability to clearly convey instruction.
  • Be able to use Microsoft software including Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Have a qualification in a relevant field at university level and/or diploma in the DZMAA Keeper’s course or equivalent work experience.

ZSL is seeking a Qualified Keeper to work on our Mammals North section at London Zoo. The role will involve assisting keepers in the day to day husbandry of large and diverse Mammals (including giraffes, pigmy hippo's and wild hunting dogs and other hoof stock animals) within the zoological collection. The successful candidate will be expected to ensure high standards of animal welfare, animal husbandry and keep daily checks and records of animals within the mammals section.



Working hours are 37.5 per week, worked within a roster which includes regular weekends so flexibility regarding hours is crucial. Applicants must have a passion for working with a variety of animals within a Zoo environment and experience with mammals is essential. · Have a logical, precise and scientific approach to animal keeping is required and the successful candidate will understand the conservation, research and educational role of ex situ animal populations.
· Able to use Microsoft software including Outlook, Excel and Word.
· Have a qualification in a relevant field at university level and/or diploma in the DZMAA Keeper’s course or equivalent work experience.
· Be reliable and have good time-keeping and attendance record and able to demonstrate leadership and professionalism.

Please note: Good communication skills and experience of dealing with the public is essential, together with the ability to work effectively within a team and mentor, train and inspire junior members of staff. Hours are 37.5 per week, worked within a roster which includes weekends.
