CONSERVATION COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Full Time, permanent (35 hours per week)

Chester Zoo is the UK’s No.1 top zoo, providing visitors with a fun-packed day out, but with a serious mission - to be a major force in conserving biodiversity worldwide.

To save species from extinction we need dedicated and passionate individuals, and we are recruiting a Conservation Communications Officer to work with like-minded individuals in our Field Programmes Team. You’ll also be working closely with various other zoo teams who contribute to our conservation work and, of course, with our partners overseas.

The job of the Conservation Communications Officer is to spread the word about the huge range of conservation activities the zoo is engaged in, with a particular emphasis on our field work, and generate interest and support for wildlife conservation. This includes working with zoo teams who engage our visitors on-site, who produce our media releases and who manage the Chester Zoo website. Managing the content of the Act For Wildlife website and various associated conservation campaign will also be a large part of the job.

In fact the Conservation Communications Officer will take the lead on the majority of the Field Programme related communications. They will be expected to design, develop and implement effective awareness material, this includes evaluating what we already do, generating awareness, stimulating behaviour change or providing updates to a range of audiences from zoo staff to visitors, the public and peers. This could also include involvement in overseas projects where these communication skills can be put to the test in the field.

The Conservation Communications Officer will need a unique combination of skills – experience and knowledge of biodiversity conservation with experience of producing effective awareness materials to a range of audiences (a minimum of an MSc or equivalent in a conservation or communication related subject with at least one qualification in a biological sciences discipline).

It goes without saying we are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail and creative flair. The Conservation Communications Officer will also need strong skills in the common computer software packages, excellent oral and written communication skills and exceptional organisational abilities.

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week, Monday-Friday) based at Chester Zoo, with the possibility of some periods overseas and weekend work.
The salary is £21,015 per annum for a 35 hour week.

BACKGROUND
Dudley Zoological Gardens is a major visitor attraction located within the West Midlands, and has been in existence for nearly 75 years.
The site is unique in that it is home to some of the world’s rarest species, a Norman castle, and the world’s largest single collection of Tecton buildings.
We are now looking to expand and develop the educational aspects of our business, incorporating both the zoological and historical characteristics, and to work with local colleges.

PERSONAL QUALITIES/QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level, relevant to this environment, with experience of teaching and supervising staff, and a good level of understanding of the educational system.

  • Be computer literate with a good standard of English.
  • Preferable, although not essential, to have a knowledge of native species, and animal husbandry.
  • Will require strong leadership and organisational skills and a dynamic and passionate approach.
  • Clean driving licence.
  • Required to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays, as necessary.

THE JOB
  • To develop and manage all the education and conservation aspects of the business.
  • To include school visits, outreach activities and on-site workshops.
  • Work with a small team, in both a managerial and participative approach.
  • To work with higher education establishments to provide training for NVQ level 2 and 3 students.

The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) is the largest international wetland conservation charity in the UK. Our mission is to promote, protect and develop wetlands and their wildlife. WWT operates nine visitor centres in the UK aimed at bringing people closer to wetland wildlife.

The Slimbridge Centre is looking for a Captive Animal Manager to take responsibility for the care, husbandry and breeding of our captive mammal species within the Centre and to maintain the horticultural and general maintenance of their exhibits. You will develop and implement a programme of daily talks/presentations for visitors and supervise the non-aviculture exhibits including Toad Hall and The Tropical House.

The successful candidate will be educated to A-Level standard or equivalent with practical experience of working with mammals including a knowledge of husbandry and breeding techniques. The ability to manage a small team is essential.

Job Description

UK Conservation Officer

Directly responsible to the Chief Executive

To manage and oversee the UK Conservation Projects that the Trust is currently undertaking.

Responsible for:

Management of UK field projects.

Advice on habitat management to companies and individuals (including land owners and farmers, etc)

Field visits and site surveys as required.

Erecting nest boxes and monitoring nest sites and prey species abundance.

Wildlife monitoring, data analysis and the production of reports.

Identifying projects and accessing funding for conservation projects with the Chief Executive.

Giving presentations at conferences, to organisations and other outreach initiatives.

Updating the conservation information on our website – www.owls.org

Production and updating of relevant leaflets.

Presenting a monthly report to the Trust’s Executive Committee.

Presenting annual reports to the BOCN, BTO and Natural England.

Liaising with other conservation organisations.

Organisation of our children’s Wildlife Watch Club at Muncaster in conjunction with the Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

On-site conservation workshops for visiting groups.

Any other duties and tasks of a reasonable nature requested by the World Owl Trust senior management.


Person Specification

Personal Qualities:

You must be enthusiastic, confident, self-motivated and innovative.

You will have the ability to understand the social needs of people and their possible lack of knowledge about conservation and the environment, whilst encouraging them to become aware of their involvement in these issues and the areas in which they could become effective.

You need to have excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

You need to be able to work both independently and as part of a team

You need to show a demonstrable commitment to the environmental sector.

You should be able to liaise diplomatically and tactfully with a wide range of partner organisations and individuals.

Skills:

Sound field skills are necessary with specialist knowledge of bird species and small mammals is an advantage.

You must have a broad knowledge and understanding of conservation issues particularly the UK Biodiversity Action Planning process and relevant UK and European legislation.

You must have proven project management skills and be able to plan your workload to achieve targets and work to deadlines.

You must be computer literate and be able to accurately record data and to use that data to produce reports. Experience or knowledge of “Recorder” would be an advantage.

A working Knowledge of presentation software.

You must have a valid driving licence and the use of a car.

A BTO ringing licence would be an advantage but not essential.


Salary: £16,500 per annum
