The Animal Encounters department is currently recruiting for reliable, confident team members to join the animal team on seasonal contracts starting in January, February, March and April through to November 2016.

Working as part of the successful Animal & Welfare team you will be responsible for maintaining a safe environment for both you and the visitors by adhering to associated risk assessments and protocols without exception.

You will be expected to practice high levels of animal husbandry, training and enrichment; as well as ensuring the visitor experience is exceptional.

The successful applicant should demonstrate a passion for animal welfare & conservation, be highly motivated, flexible and committed to Woburn Safari Park’s high standards of husbandry and welfare. Due to the wide variety of species on this large and busy department, candidates must have previous practical experience of working with a range of animals.

As this is a customer facing role, the right candidate will have demonstrable presentation and customer services skills with a passion for education and conservation.

Purpose of Position

To ensure safe and efficient animal husbandry is practised at all times. The post-holder
will be expected to report and advice on husbandry and staff safety matters, via the
Head of Section (HOS) and HADW. Responsible for ensuring the Department’s and
the Park’s Objectives are the driving force behind all his/her activities within the Area
including ensuring the best possible customer experience is delivered within their area
or responsibility.

Tasks and responsibilities

To maintain standards of husbandry and animal care as set by the HADW, and Head
of Section (HOS) or keeping staff with seniority as determined by HOS.

To ensure the most effective use of all resources at all times, both financial and
otherwise.

 To be aware of procedures in case of accident or fire.

To ensure that company policies and procedures are carried out as stated in the
company/staff handbooks.

To ensure the visitor experience including ‘special visits’ are exceptional within the
constraints of the resources available and to support the culture of delivering
exceptional customer service

To ensure health and safety standards and associated administration is maintained to
a high standard by adhering to protocols, following risk assessments and identify and
communicating any potential problems/risks to HOS to ensure they can be avoided.

To ensure adequate administrative records are kept in conjunction with the HOS and
departmental administrator.
 To identify and advise the HOS and HAWD on potential improvements possible within
the animal department.

To undertake any and all practical work within the animal collection as directed and
in accordance with the appropriate protocols.

To support the culture of delivery of exceptional customer service.

To undertake tasks as directed by the HOS AND HAWD.

To ensure a high standard of personal hygiene and appearance at all times.

We are looking to recruit a Discovery and Learning Officer initially for a one year contract, this post has 2 days guaranteed per week. However in line with business needs, this could rise to 5 days per week during our busy seasonal periods. The post is located within the Discovery and Learning department at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, but will also link to, and work at the Discovery and Learning department at ZSL London Zoo

The Discovery and Learning (D&L) Officer will play a key role in delivering ZSL’s learning strategy and in doing so achieve the Society’s mission to raise awareness and inform visitors and other audiences about animals, their habitats and associated conservation issues. The D&L Officer will achieve this through the development and delivery of a range of learning programmes and events, for a variety of audiences, the principal ones being schools, but also includes FE, HE, adult learners, teachers and education professionals. There will be additional project work which will link into all aspects of the D&L strategy including carrying out evaluation and visitor studies, assisting to develop ZSL Arts and Culture programmes and actively contributing to ZSL’s CEPA (Communication, Education and Public awareness) projects, which link to ZSL Conservation Programmes

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience working with children of a variety of ages and abilities
  • Proven experience delivering learning programmes in either a formal or informal environment
  • Recognised excellence in presenting public talks/shows/events to a range of different audiences
  • Experience of delivering practical programmes in an outdoor environment
  • Demonstrable knowledge of working in a zoo or animal related environment
  • Acknowledged excellence in communicating conservation and environmental messages to a wide range of audiences
  • Experience of conducting conservation field work (either biological or social research)
  • Knowledgeable of the work of ZSL, BIAZA, EAZA and the wider zoo community
  • Recognised experience in learning new skills and information within a strict time limit e.g. performance skills, handling different animals, working with different colleagues and departments
  • Documented ability in producing creative, innovative and dynamic ideas and outputs for a range of difference scenarios and projects.

Wildlife Veterinary Advisor


Reporting To: Dr. Wayne McCallum (Footprints Organization, Director) and Bunthim Malivot (Park Manager).

Work band: Volunteer

Term: The initial term of this position will be for four months, but will be open to extension subject to mutual agreement and the availability of funds. 

Location: The position is based at Teuk Chhou, 15 minutes by vehicle from the town of Kampot, in southwest Cambodia. The volunteer is expected to spend the bulk of their time working at the Teuk Chhou Wildlife Education Park.

Working hours: 8:30 to 11:30 pm - 1:30 to 5:00 pm

Scope of Position: The Wildlife Veterinary Advisor position will be responsible for:

1.      Necessary mandatory protocols, such as vaccinations, worming procedures etc and attendance to any illnesses.

2.      Mentoring and support of a Khmer qualified veterinary graduate, so that they are eventually able to perform all veterinarian tasks at Teuk Chhou.

3.      Support the wildlife education park team with other activities as requested by either the Director or Park manager.

Experience: Experience in veterinarian care, including wild animal treatment in zoo situations. Confidence and knowledge in the provision of medicines and treatment of animals is a mandatory requirement.

Professional Qualifications: Qualifications in veterinarian science.

Other Skills: Experience in fund raising and educational interpretation is desirable.  

Personal: The successful applicant will need to be someone who can easily crossover between the Khmer and western worlds, while also being able to work as part of a team, to provide direction to his/her follow team members.

The applicant will also need to be someone who can talk with passion and commitment about the project, enthusing others with its vision and a desire to support it.  

Language Proficiency: English as a first language, or fluent written and spoken English as a second language. Ability to speak Khmer is highly desirable or an ability to learn. 

Remuneration: This is a volunteer position, however we would like to be able to offer support for daily living costs, therefore $200 per month will be provided.

Budgets: There is no dedicated budget associated with the position. The volunteer will be asked to develop budgets for all activities that he or she wishes to undertake. These will need to be approved by the Park Manager and Director before expenditure is possible.

Reporting: The Advisor will need to complete a monthly report on their activities. All expenditure will need to be summarized on to a spreadsheet and supported by receipts.

Other: The volunteer will be required to organize their own visa and to have medical insurance coverage over the terms of their volunteer period. Proof of both will be required before the position is commenced.

Marwell Wildlife is a registered charity dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources. Our 140 acre zoological park in the heart of Hampshire is home to over 170 exotic and charismatic species in beautiful landscaped surroundings.

We are currently looking to recruit a Trainee Keeper on a fixed term basis to work on a mixed species section. Roles and responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal welfare, health and animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records.

Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Curator for Mammals. Reporting to the Senior Curator of Animals, this is a hands-on position with the post holder being responsible for the daily care and supervision of the Zoo’s mammal collection as well as supervising the staff involved with their care. There will also be some Curatorial duties as directed by the Senior Curator of Animals.

The position is to cover maternity leave working 80 hours per fortnight as part of the departmental 14 day rota.

The successful applicant will have excellent knowledge of mammal husbandry and captive breeding protocols and will lead a 13 person team. This team has overall responsibility for the daily care of the Zoo’s varied collection of mammals.

The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science and hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (previously known as ANCMZA) or its equivalent. The ability to supervise staff is essential and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is desirable.

Chester Zoo is one of the premier Zoos in the UK and a major tourist attraction for the region.

Our Assistant Presenters are responsible for improving the visitors’ experience to the Zoo. We have three vacancies to join our Presenter Team. The posts demand lots of public interaction, requiring a confident and outgoing personality and work is both indoors and outdoors.

Acting as an information point the successful candidate will be helping visitors to enjoy their day and be able to answer their questions. They will look after visitors in the Dinosaurs at Large! Exhibition, animal exhibits (including Fruit Bat Forest) and in our visitor centre (this may include running activities like storytelling, touch-tables, chats and demonstrations),

The successful candidates will have a wide-ranging and in-depth knowledge of the natural world (including dinosaurs) and good communication skills. They will have good working knowledge and experience of delivering Zoo Education. They will be able to work as part of a team and individually and have the ability to provide excellent customer care. The successful candidate will have good knowledge of conservation issues.

The successful candidate will ideally have a good knowledge of Chester Zoo’s animal collection and conservation work and they will ideally have experience of public speaking or guided tours.

This post is subject to an enhanced CRB check.

Work is 5 days in 7, including bank holidays and every weekend. Hours are 9.30am to 5pm daily. The rate of pay is £6.05 per hour (Subject to Job Evaluation), with a probationary period. The contracts will run from 11th July to 4th September 2011.

Paignton Zoo is an education and scientific charity dedicated to conserving our global wildlife heritage and inspiring in its visitors a life long respect for animals and the environment.

The busy veterinary centre (2 vets and 2 vet nurses) is looking for a qualified, registered VN to work on a short term contract from May 20th 2011 until January 2012 with the possibility of extension, for 5 days a week, to include alternate weekends.

Previous experience with exotics, zoos, large animal or equine practice and a full clean driving licence would be advantageous.

The job is based at Paignton Zoo with occasional work at Living Coasts. The post involves preventative and reactive medical and surgical nursing, pathology, talking to the public, liaising with members of other departments and a wide variety of computer and paper work.

We need someone who is organised, tidy, keen to learn, computer literate, thorough and happy to interact with the public to help educate and improve the visitor experience.

CPD is provided and funded on a pro rata basis.

We are looking for 2 individuals to assist with the day-to-day operational aspects of the Great Crane Project (GCP) rearing facility. This will include the maintenance and cleaning of the facilities and equipment, avian habitat management, and helping the aviculturalists with the care of the captive cranes.

Short term contract: 12 months contract, with the possibility to extend further

Salary: 63-93K, salary will depend on the successful applicant’s level of relevant experience

Australia Zoo is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Veterinarian with Zoo and Wildlife experience to fill the position of Senior Veterinarian for a period of 12 months. There will be an opportunity to negotiate an extended contract to follow on from the 12 month contract.

The position of Veterinarian at Australian Zoo requires the provision of veterinary services to All Zoo animals, and any and all other duties as may, from time to time, be requested by senior staff. These duties are expected to be performed at a high standard and with a high level of compassion. Animal welfare considerations are paramount in the treatment and veterinary management of patients and are affected minimally by commercial or financial considerations.

Zoo Veterinarians are required to show a high level of professionalism, commitment and dedication to their roles, which may include long hours, after-hours calls, night-time work and weekend/public holiday work. In return for this commitment the position allows a high degree of professional satisfaction, ability to contribute to an altruistic cause, the opportunity to contribute to field-based projects and research. The Zoo is well equipped and serviced, with an Australia Zoo specific vet nurse.

Our patients are generally Australia Zoo captive animals, but can include translocation and other management of wildlife and captive species. However, under no circumstances should animal welfare suffer and all practice will be done in the best interests of the animal. The position requires good cooperation & communication with the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

The Senior Veterinarian is expected to manage the Australia Zoo veterinary services department and in doing so monitor, maintain and protect the health of the Zoo collection and ensure that an excellent standard of health care is provided for the Zoo collection animals by providing veterinary services including:

· Manage staff and staff training, liaise with management and oversee stocking and maintenance of veterinary facilities

· Treat sick and injured collection animals

· Plan and implement preventative health programs for collection animals

· Implement and maintain quarantine protocols

· Review diet plans and investigate nutrition-related disease

· Conduct post mortems on deceased collection animals

· Investigate and manage any disease outbreaks

· In the course of carrying out veterinary functions review, and where applicable update or change practices and procedures

· Support research goals and projects

· Provide support and training to keeping staff in medicating and treating animals


Veterinary work at Australia Zoo will include indoors or outdoors work. Veterinarians may also be required to travel (at the expense of Australia Zoo) domestically and internationally.


Selection Criteria:

· Veterinary degree registrable in Queensland.

· At least 12 months experience working with wildlife and exotic species including avian and reptilian species.

· Experience working in senior or management positions.

· Experience and understanding of conservation and zoological issues.

· Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team effectively.

· Demonstrated planning and organisational skills including the ability to prioritise work and meet established timeframes.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish effective working relationships.

· Demonstrated computer skills and proficiency in database applications and Microsoft Office.

· Current First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain.

· Current Driver’s License recognized by Queensland authorities.

· Current Queensland Firearms License or ability to obtain.

Auckland Zoo - Vet Nurse (Fixed Term)


Are you interested in a new challenge? Come and work at the New Zealand Centre of Conservation Medicine to provide a high-standard of nursing care to our native fauna and exotic species!

You will work with two vets, one veterinary resident and one other nurse to provide exceptional veterinary service to the rest of the Auckland Zoo. The team is expanded by weekend relief staff. You will be expected to be highly skilled and motivated, in order to assist the NZCCM in moving forward. We require a minimum of three years experience in veterinary nursing with a keen and demonstrated focus on anaesthesia and clinical nursing. Previous experience with exotic species is ideal though not essential. Here, every day is different - not everyone can say that they have anaesthetized a serval or a radiographed a kiwi!

Essential requirements:

•A recognised Veterinary Nursing qualification
•Minimum of 2-3 years recent full-time veterinary nursing experience, including significant clinical and anaesthetic monitoring experience
•Confident in animal handling
•Ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team
•Excellent written and communication skills
•High level of organisational and time management skills
•A highly motivated and dynamic individual with maturity and who are passionate about what they do
•A current driver's license
We offer a fulltime, fixed term contract of 6 months. The hours are 8am-4.30pm Monday to Friday, with some weekend work.
