Presenter - Chester Zoo



Presenter
Temporary (until 4th September 2011)

Chester Zoo, one of Europe’s leading Zoological collections, has an active and award winning Education Division, now seeking a Presenter on a temporary contract running to 4th September 2011.

Our Presenter team are a vital part of enhancing the visitors’ experience and work includes delivering public talks anf guided tours, interpretation and exhibition supervision. School holiday activities may include story telling. Audiences vary from 2 to 500 or more, and there is lots of public interaction requiring a confident and outgoing personality.

The successful candidate will have a Zoo Biology or Conservation related degree, and have good communication skills. They will have experience of Zoo Education and of public speaking or delivering guided tours and will have a good working knowledge of Zoo education techniques and experience in delivering this. The successful applicant will have a good knowledge of conservation issues and a wide-ranging and in depth knowledge of the natural world. They will be able to work as part of a team and individually and have the ability to provide excellent customer care.

The successful candidate will ideally have a good knowledge of Chester Zoo’s animal collection, our conservation work and be computer literate (in particular working knowledge of Microsoft Office).

This post is subject to an enhanced CRB check.

Work is 5 days in 7, including bank holidays, every weekend and occasional evenings. Rate of pay is £6.81 per hour (subject to Job Evaluation).

Veterinary Nurse – part-time - Edinburgh Zoo



The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) owns and manages Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park. The Wildlife Park is a premier visitor attraction, based at Kingussie in the Highlands, with many Scottish and other species, some of which are now extinct in the wild. Edinburgh Zoo is the second biggest paying visitor attraction in Scotland (after the Castle along the road), with over 650,000 people each year enjoying an excellent day out. Of equal importance is our excellent international reputation for our conservation and education programmes and we are looking to the future with confidence. We’ve been a charity since our founding in 1909 and maintain a keen commercial edge to ensure we can sustain our excellent reputation. Our mission is to inspire and excite our visitors with the wonder of living animals, and thus to promote the conservation of threatened species and habitats.

Veterinary Nurse – part-time
A vacancy has arisen for a Veterinary Nurse to work within the Animals, Education and Conservation Department. The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of relevant experience working with a variety of animal species and be a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse. Experience working with exotic animals in a zoo or wildlife park setting would be desirable. The candidate must have excellent communication skills, be a proven team player and have a positive and confident approach to work. The post is a part time position, 22.5 hours per week and flexibility on shift patterns is desirable.

Salary for this post will be in the region of £16,000 pro rata.

Education Team Member - The Tropical Butterfly House



The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre is seeking an additional member of the Education Team. The post will involve delivering educational talks to school groups, presenting a packed timetable of Animal Encounters and any other duties as reasonably required by the business such as admissions and retail. The centre has an exciting new education programme delivered in several enjoyable and interactive sessions.

You will be a lively and confident speaker with a friendly and approachable manner. You will be driven to help the centre achieve its mission to encourage visitors to develop a better understanding and awareness of the natural world around them using enjoyable, interactive hands on learning. Experience in public speaking desirable; experience delivering talks in an educational setting advantageous. Confidence handling a wide range of animals is essential.

The position will include weekend and Bank Holiday working.

Pay: min wage start with possibility of review depending on performance.
Hours: 8 hours per week initially, more hours as and when the business dictates with a maximum of 5 days per week. Fixed term contract to suit seasonal nature of the business.

Colchester Zoo is currently looking to recruit a trainee keeper for the Wild about animals theatre, part of the displays section of the zoo for an immediate start.

This is an exciting opportunity on a varied and visitor focussed section. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated and confident individual.

Duties will include daily husbandry and training for a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates, as well as 6 daily educational presentations.

Experience with exotics and a qualification in the Zoo animal management certificate or equivalent are preferred but not essential.

Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre - Animal Presenter

The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre is looking to recruit an Animal Presenter to join the team following the success of last season. The ideal candidate will be a lively and confident speaker with a friendly and approachable manner.




The post will involve presenting daily bird of prey and parrot displays during peak season as well as joining the education team to deliver talks to school groups and members of the public.

The position will work alongside our current animal presenting team as well as receiving training from a professional animal training consultant. The position will run from March to October inclusive with the possibility to extend the contract for the right applicant.

Experience in bird of prey and parrot training is highly advantageous along with a thorough understanding of animal behaviour. At least 2 years experience working in a zoo environment desirable.

ANIMAL TRAINER/KEEPER

Turtle Bay Exploration Park is seeking an extraordinary individual interested in becoming part of a small, but dynamic and innovative training and education team for our Animal department. Turtle Bay Exploration Park is located on the beautiful Sacramento River in Redding, CA. Our 300-acre campus straddles the Sacramento River and includes a Forest Camp, Visitor Center, Museum, Aquarium, 20-acre garden, and a 220-acre natural oak savannah/ arboretum.

The position of Trainer/Keeper is a full-time, hourly position with benefits (medical/dental/vision/ life) and is responsible for the performance of the on-grounds summer show as well as other education programs throughout the year. Responsibilities also include daily care, weighing, preparing diets, training and exhibit maintenance for over 29 species of animals including raptors, corvids, snakes, turtles, porcupine, fox and raccoon.

Qualifications for the Trainer/Keeper include:

Experience/Education: Minimum 1 year of experience with animal training, positive reinforcement training techniques, and behavioral enrichment; a degree in biology, zoology, environmental/science education, or a related field, or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

A theater or environmental education background is encouraged.

Communication/Interpersonal Skills: Applicant must be outgoing, creative, confident, self-motivated, and work well independently, as well as with others (including adult and teen volunteers). Applicant must have good stage presence and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
