Scale £18,000 to £23,000 (Dependent on experience)


Accommodation not provided


Permanent



40 per week, normally Monday to Friday, with some weekend work.




Part of the Trust for Sustainable Living, The Living Rainforest is a developing sustainability and conservation focused educational charity which runs a rainforest-inspired visitor centre in Berkshire, featuring plants and animals from this threatened tropical ecosystem.

The position of Zoological Curator is now available for the right applicant. This position offers huge scope and potential to lead the zoological department into the next exciting phase in The Living Rainforest’s future, as we develop new ways to guide, teach, and motivate people to protect the world’s threatened wildlife and ecosystems and promote more sustainable living.


Applicant qualities:
You will be active within the zoo community and able to give the department direction through collection planning, commitment to conservation programs and initiating projects. You will be expected to lead and work as part of a team – the role dictates that a ‘hands on’ approach will be required.

The collection at The Living Rainforest is diverse and therefore the applicant should have experience of several taxa. Working knowledge of ‘tropical’ replicated environments would be an advantage. With over three years experience at senior keeper level, a working knowledge of ARKS and a proven track record in your field, you will be able to develop the department including team members. You will also be educated to degree level or above in an appropriate subject, with a thorough understanding of all legislation surrounding zoological collections such as zoo licensing.

Required:



  • Three or more years experience at senior level


  • Experience of a wide range of taxa


  • Degree or higher in an appropriate subject (e.g. conservation, animal management)


  • Thorough understanding of zoo legislation

  • Experience of collection and zoo development

  • Passion for education and public interaction.


  • Some weekend work will be required

You will be dynamic within the zoo community and able to give the department direction through collection planning, commitment to conservation programs and initiating projects. You will be expected to lead and work as part of a team – the role dictates that a ‘hands on’ approach will be required.

With over six years experience in a senior role or curatorial level, a working knowledge of ARKS and a proven track record in your field, you will be able to develop the department including team members. You will also be educated to degree level in an appropriate subject, preferably MSc level, with a thorough understanding of all legislation surrounding zoological collections such as zoo licensing.

Six or more years experience at a senior or curatorial level
Experience of tropical species and wide range of taxa
Degree or higher in an appropriate subject (conservation, animal management)
Thorough understanding of zoo legislation
Proven experience of collection and zoo development
Track record
Some weekend work will be required
May suit someone who is looking to considerably expand their experience in all aspects of zoo management.
