TEAM LEADER - BIRD DEPARTMENT AND PRESENTER

Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park is situated midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh just four miles from Stirling.   We are a small privately owned Safari Park of 125 acres holding 70 species of animals.
We currently have a vacancy for a full time permanent team leader to work within our bird section and manage a diverse collection of birds i.e. raven, caracara, falcons, eagles that are flown in daily presentations for our visitors during open season. There is accommodation on the estate for the successful applicant.

Key Responsibilities
  • Training of all the birds for high impact and dynamic presentations.
  • Maintaining a high standard of health and welfare of the birds
  • Accurate record keeping and monitoring of the birds.
  • Daily husbandry duties within the section.
  • Training and development of staff within the department
  • Maintaining health & safety of staff and visitors.
  • Promote the safari park and its attributes to the visiting public.



Key Skill & Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a bird keeper with developed skills to fly birds using different techniques.
  • Must be enthusiastic, high performing and motivated with a proven track record in zoo animal management.
  • Good team worker with a positive outlook and excellent communication skills
  • Commitment to continued professional development of yourself and other staff
  • Previous experience of supervising and training staff
  • Zoo keeping experience and a relevant animal-related qualification
  • Flexible working is essential and includes weekends and Bank holidays on a rota system.


Salary is negotiable depending on experience and to be reviewed after 6 months, a full clean driving licence is essential.

DEPUTY CURATOR OF BIRDS
Permanent - 40 hours per week

We currently have an exciting vacancy for a Deputy Curator of Birds. For the right candidate, this post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide variety of bird species.

The Role:
•        Assisting the Curator of Birds in the daily management of two sections, acting as a deputy to ensure the highest standards of animal husbandry, welfare and exhibitry
•        Overseeing budgets and conservation/research projects
•        Coordinating exhibit development and staff training
•        Collection planning and welfare audits for the bird sections
•        Working in the zoo’s public displays and quarantine areas, and supporting off-show breeding areas
•        Representing Chester Zoo at media interviews, internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences both in the UK and overseas

The successful candidate will have:
•        A Biological Science degree, HND or equivalent experience
•        Expert knowledge of the taxonomy, biology and key conservation issues relating to birds
•        Strong leadership skills and the ability to build strong working relationships across teams
•        Excellent skills in the husbandry and management of birds and in the design of bird exhibits and facilities in a zoological environment
•        Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
•        Excellent project management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks
•        A full driving licence valid in the UK

Experience of managing databases for ex situ populations (EEP/ESB) as well as using SPARKS/PMx, and of working on in situ conservation projects would be an advantage. A Masters degree in Biology or a closely-related subject would also be desirable.

Hours of work are 40 hours per week worked Monday to Friday, with the requirement to work some weekends and Bank Holidays as part of the Duty Curator rota.

Overview of Role:
The Zoological Society of London is looking for a Qualified Keeper on the Park Birds Section based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. The main purpose of the qualified keeper position is to manage the day to day operational duties relating to animal husbandry and visitor interaction within the section. You will be responsible to the section Team Leader or other key senior animal department staff within the section. Working within this department gives the successful applicant experience of a captive breeding and release program with the corncrake and also numerous other high profile species which include, Wattled cranes and also the blue crowned laughing thrush.

The successful candidate will be required to have:
•        Previous experience of aviculture in a zoo or equivalent environment.
•        A qualification in zoo animal management such as the DMZAA or equivalent level of work experience.
•        Good communication skills, enthusiasm, and an outgoing and friendly personality. 
•        A full driving licence - essential.

Bird Internship



Bird Internship (unpaid)

Wingham Wildlife Park has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual wanting to gain valuable zoo animal keeping experience, working alongside keepers on the bird section.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months, volunteering 5 full working days per week including weekends, school holidays and bank holidays.

The internship is unpaid and would benefit those who have either already gained or are working towards an animal management or similar qualification. As well as individuals who are already established in conservation or animal care and looking for further specialist zoo experience. Experience within a zoo setting and in particular birds would be desirable. 

A driving licence or access to good public transport is essential and please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation.

Wingham Wildlife Park is a family run wildlife park with big emphasis on animal husbandry, conservation, education and safety for our animals, staff and visitors. This section covers a large variety of species ranging from penguins, parrots, flamingos, lorikeets & various small birds.

•        Observe the behaviour, health and security of animals and report any problems to the Team Leader or manager including defects or repairs required to enclosures and relevant departments required to support work needed.
•        Assist with the preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures.
•        Cleaning and maintaining of exhibits and other designated areas.

The successful candidate will:
•        Practical experience of animal management with a range of exotic species.
•        Broad taxonomic knowledge on a range of species managed within zoological collections.
•        Willingness to work on evolving husbandry management within zoological collections to include positive re-enforcement training for behavioural management and varied methods of enrichment for a range of species.
•        Knowledge of techniques used to handle specific animals should catch ups or veterinary procedures require this.
•        Be able to demonstrate initiative and a pro-active approach to completing tasks beneficial to the section/department without always waiting to be asked.
•        Have a qualification in a relevant field at university level and/or diploma in the DZMAA Keeper’s course or equivalent work experience.
•        Be reliable and have good time-keeping and attendance record and able to demonstrate leadership and professionalism.

Please note: Flexible working is required for this position which will include working alternate weekends and bank holidays. Applicant must also be presentable, flexible in their approach and totally reliable.
