Summary of Role: 

Instrumental, in conjunction with the Trustees, in formulating and implementing the strategic plan for Wild Futures.  Accountable for the leadership, organisation administration, including resources and financial management required to deliver the plan.

Lead member of the Finance Group and acts as the main point of communication between the trustees, the employees and the public.

The Wild Futures Sanctuary currently houses primates consisting of capuchin monkeys (Cebus and Sapajus sp), common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) and woolly monkeys (Lagothrix sp). The majority of the residents are victims of the exotic pet trade in the UK.

 

Members of the care team are responsible for all aspects of daily care, working together to enhance and improve the lives of the primates at the Sanctuary. All members are required to work with all primate species housed at the Sanctuary as well as help support other aspects of the charity’s work if required.

GUIDE TO JOB ROLE & MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Primate Care Giver

Reporting to: Primate Care Manager
Responsible for: Volunteers and interns.
Please note that reporting lines may change from time to time in line with organisational changes.  As a small team we always anticipate change.


Summary of Role: 
Members of the care team are responsible for all aspects of daily care, working together to enhance and improve the lives of the primates at the Sanctuary. All members are required to work with all primate species housed at the Sanctuary as well as help support other aspects of the charity’s work if required.


AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Key Responsibilities:
            o          PRIMATE CARE:
o          all aspects of daily care for the resident primates (diet preparation, feeding, preparing and giving medication, cleaning enclosures, creating enrichment)
o          monitoring the health and wellbeing of the primates in your care
o          caring for special needs primates with various health conditions such as diabetes
o          planning and conducting primate socializations
o          conducting behavioural observations
o          record keeping using a database system
o          Able to work around the animals in a respectful and calm manner

TEAM & PEOPLE:
o          Responsible for supervising and mentoring volunteers and interns
o          Ensuring volunteers and interns are provided with clear direction and instruction, guiding activities and behaviours
o          Inspiring volunteers and interns as a positive role model

EDUCATION/PR:
o          Speaking to members of the public on open days in an informative, positive and respectful manner as ambassadors of the Sanctuary

ADMINISTRATION & GENERAL DUTIES:
o          Stock taking and the ordering of supplier
o          Supports the shift working arrangements in place and is prepared to cover shifts, when necessary staying overnight at the Sanctuary
o          Supports general grounds maintenance, household duties and territory maintenance as required

HEALTH & SAFETY & HR POLICIES:
o          Compliance with all relevant health and safety protocols and relevant HR materials including but limited to safeguarding.  Includes, but not limited to emergency procedures, risk assessments and safe working practices.  Demonstrable ability in instructing others and ability to monitor team compliance.

Background & Qualifications:               Essential:
o          At least two years’ experience working with primates in an animal sanctuary, rescue centre or similar environment
o          Good communication skills, confident and articulate, fluent in English language
o          Proven ability to multi-task and prioritise, remaining calm under pressure
o          Physically fit and be able to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions
o          Degree in zoology or related field OR equivalent on-the-job experience in lieu of degree
o          Due to the lengthy training process, a commitment of at least two years is expected
o          possess a valid driving licence
o          Permission to work in the UK
          Desirable:
o          Experience working with capuchins and callitrichids would be an advantage
o          Veterinary care knowledge would be highly useful

                      Provide a valuable contribution in developing and maintaining the high welfare standards of the Sanctuary

The Primate Care Team Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating the primate care team to ensure and oversee best practise and high welfare standards for the primates in our care.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Key Responsibilities:




                      PRIMARY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:-
o          Responsible for coordinating monkey care in consultation with experienced staff, team and veterinary practice as appropriate.
o          Valued member of the management team but is also a hands on proactive member of the sanctuary team
o          Able to work around the animals in a respectful and calm manner
o          Must be dedicated and flexible, expected to share “cover” shifts staying on site overnight as the responsible member of staff
o          As a manager, proactively supports other aspects of the charity’s work as required and as directed by the Director
o          Make recommendations as required in respect of the budget and then closely manage the budget as signed off by the Director & Trustees
o          Expert in and maintains knowledge and latest thinking in primate care and welfare and all conservation matters relevant to the sanctuary
o          Compliance with all relevant health and safety protocols and documentation.  Includes, but not limited to emergency procedures, risk assessments and safe working practices. 
o          Demonstrable ability in instructing others and monitor team compliance

          COMMUNICATION:
o          As Care Team Manager ensures regular communication and update of all primate care issues.  Responsible for providing sanctuary wide updates and ensuring relevant personnel are kept informed including the Director
o          Willing and able to give talks to the public when the sanctuary is open to visitors
o          Provides management contribution and reporting as required at Trustee’s meeting and management meetings

          PEOPLE MANAGEMENT:
o          Calm under pressure, leads, manages, mentors, trains and enthuses members of the care team building a supportive and positive culture
o          Ability to positively engage with all team members from a diverse range of backgrounds
o          Organise, track and review carer’s progress including any management interventions such as appraisals, feedback and career development as may be necessary
o          Follows and supports all HR policies & practices
o          Designs and produces rotas to ensure appropriate cover – able to prioritise and multi task
o          Supports recruitment programmes as required

As manager of the Care Team demonstrates leadership where managing people:

                       Is an ambassador for the Wild Futures Vision
          Works as part of an effective management structure
          Contributes meaningfully to both strategy & operations
          Leads and directs with clear management – open and honest style
          Demonstrates positivity despite any personal feeling
          Ability to motivate and persuade individuals to ‘get the job done’

Charity and organisation overview: 
Wild Futures is the UK charity with the holistic approach that combines an educational, environmental and sustainability remit dedicated to promoting the welfare, conservation and survival of our closest living relatives, the non-human primates; working to end the primate trade and abuse of primates in captivity, promoting the rehabilitation of captive primates and the preservation of those in the wild, whilst operating a sanctuary for primates in need of a long term home.

Job Description:
The role of Primate Care Manager requires a dynamic, forward thinking  and focused team player. They must have an understanding and knowledge of Wild Futures objectives, aims and ethos and uphold these within their working practices.

The role will include:
•        Training:  Mentor, train and enthuse members of team and enable other team members to do the same. Much of the Primate Carer job description is applicable to the manager, with time given on the rota to enable the extra responsibilities of the managerial position.
•        Instruct and oversee best practice: To be able to effectively and respectfully communicate to colleagues of all levels, regardless of their position.
•        Organise and track carers’ progress, ensure that charts are updated, coordinate with trainers.
•        Coordinate monkey care in consultation with experienced staff, team and veterinary practice as appropriate.
•        Rotas and recruitment.
•        Ensure good communication of all primate care issues between staff and coordinate work. Provide updates at All Staff meetings.
•        Weekly meetings with the Site Manager and Director to coordinate work and report and discuss welfare, practical, personnel and governance issues.
•        Attend and report to the statutory Trustee meetings (x4 per year).
•        Familiarity and compliance with all health and safety protocols and documentation. This includes emergency procedures, risk assessment and safe working practices. Ability to instruct others in the above and monitor compliance.
•        Manage budget (as agreed by Director and Trustees).
•        Report to and consult with Director on all of above.

You should be knowledgeable about and have a commitment to the aims of Wild Futures and The Monkey Sanctuary. You will learn to work with each of the various primate species resident at the Sanctuary. Due to the intensive and lengthy training process, a commitment of at least two years is required for applicants to be considered for this role.

You will become a functional member of the Primate Care Team. This role includes the following: You will be expected to learn to distinguish individual monkeys, to become knowledgeable about their backgrounds, and to show a sensitivity to their needs which indicates your suitability as a primate carer. Over the course of your training, you will (under the supervision of experienced staff) become one of the monkeys' primary caregivers; managing the monkeys, cleaning, maintaining and enriching enclosures; preparing and distributing food and medication; monitoring the health and well-being of the monkeys in your care. You will be responsible for maintaining daily up-to date information on the status and well-being of each individual through a computer database. You will become knowledgeable about the behaviour and ecology of each species of monkey and apply this knowledge in their daily care.

You will be required to do cover (that is, stay on-site and be the responsible member of staff) one or two overnight shifts per week.

Other responsibilities
The Sanctuary is open to the public for seven months of the year. You will spend a sizeable amount of time speaking to the public, in large and small groups, about our rescued monkeys, monkeys in the wild, the ethos and history of Wild Futures and the Monkey Sanctuary, and more. You should demonstrate confidence and willingness to do this.

You will also:

Be asked to supervise volunteers on monkey cleaning routines, making enrichment and other tasks that are essential to the day to day running of the Sanctuary.

Be asked to assist with other work such as territory maintenance, grounds and gardening work, and general household duties.

Be expected to develop and maintain good communications with all team members and evolve a co-operative living and working relationship with other members of the community. A regular review process will enable you and the team to monitor your progress and mentor you through your training.

Show that you can be flexible in your work, adapting to new situations as they arise and you will be able to prioritise work according to tasks you have been given (with monkey care always being the most important).

Be expected to work five full days a week and to be flexible about your days off.

You will have an allowance of thirty days annual leave per year; to be allocated in collaboration with other members of staff. Bank Holidays are work days. Applicants must be UK or EU residents or have permission to work in the UK.
