About the role
In this role you will assist the Animal Care Supervisor in the management and organisation of the displays team to achieve consistently high standards of display presentation and animal husbandry. You will take responsibility for ensuring the continual development and innovation within the displays areas and be responsible for maintenance plans of the life support systems and the cleanliness of our displays as well as the development of suitable diets and feeds for our animals, ensuring we present world class displays.

About you
You will be a dynamic, confident and a self-motivated individual; who will be an integral part of the team aiming for a centre of excellence in animal management, conservation, preservation and education.
Using your experience, gained by working in a similar environment, you will have a robust knowledge of animal husbandry; and have the ability to communicate to all employees and clients as well as deliver a highly immersive experience to all our visitors.  You’ll also have a good understanding of zoo licensing having been through a zoo licence in a previous role, project management experience and ideally be educated to degree level or equivalent.

About us
The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek is the only fully operational seal rescue centre in Cornwall. Our seal sanctuary provides a lifeline for stray, sick and injured seal pups which have been discovered around the Cornwall coast. The Sanctuary is a busy rescue centre, and also has resident Grey Seals, Common Seals, Patagonian & Californian Sea Lions, Penguins, Otters, Goats, Sheep and Ponies. Occasionally the Sanctuary's facilities and expertise are called upon to aid in the rescue of other marine creatures such as Dolphins and Turtles.

Reporting To: Displays Supervisor and Senior Animal Care Assistant
Department: Displays
Direct Reports: None
Contract: Hourly Paid / Full Time

The Role

A challenging position has arisen for a full time Animal Care Assistant at the National Seal Sanctuary, Cornwall.

Core responsibilities for the positions include:

 daily maintenance of the Seal Hospital facility and its surroundings;
 rescue, rehabilitation and release of grey seal pups;
 resident animal care and husbandry, including training and enrichment;
 daily maintenance of physical resources, pools and associated systems;
 the delivery of entertaining and informative daily talks to visitors.

The Person

Ideal candidates will have a proven track record in applied animal care, handling, and husbandry. Most important is a firm understanding of the core functions and values of the Sanctuary, and a strong desire to support the Sanctuary team in maintaining the highest standards of performance in all job responsibilities.

The candidates will need patience, a good sense of humour, superior communication skills, a strong sense of teamwork, and flexibility with working hours/days. Excellent health, stamina and strength, and a full clean driving licence, are essential.
