Executive Director - International Bird Rescue

IBR is seeking an Executive Director to provide strategic leadership of the organization and to ensure IBR’s programs and activities are consistent with its mission and vision. 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead the development and implementation of strategic planning and be responsible for the overall management of the organization. Additionally, s/he will provide oversight of marketing and publicrelations activities, cultivate relationships with major donors, and develop and maintain effective partnerships with other wildlife and emergency response organizations. 

The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to day operations of the organization, including monitoring projects and budgets as well as establishing all administrative policies and procedures to ensure that mandates are executed in an effective manner consistent with IBR’s mission and policies. S/He will serve as the public face of the organization and be a clear and persuasive speaker about IBR’s mission, programs, and impact in order to increase visibility and further enhance its reputation and standing. 

In partnership with the Board of Directors and by overseeing the work of the Development team, the Executive Director will manage IBR’s annual fundraising plan, which will be inclusive of corporate sponsorships, foundation and government funding sources, and individual donors. The Executive Director will have a particular focus on major donors, and will also cultivate community relationships and develop strategic partnerships with other organizations, corporations, and government agencies.

Along with these responsibilities, the Executive Director will work closely with the IBR Board of Directors to ensure the organization’s strong fiscal health. This position will seek to sustain positive government, community, and partner support as well as increase visibility, develop and implement specific goals and objectives, and otherwise fulfill the organization’s mission.

EAZA Executive Director

The Executive Director is responsible for managing the EAZA Executive Office, with responsibility for overseeing all services to members. In addition the Executive Director oversees strategic planning in conjunction with the Executive Committee and Council of the association. Financial planning and reporting is carried out by the Executive Director in conjunction with the association Treasurer. The position of EAZA Executive Director reports to the Chair of the association. Further details are contained in the attachment.

EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, represents and links more than 345 zoos and aquariums. EAZA assists our members with regard to the care and accommodation of the animals kept in their collections, and additionally facilitates cooperation in our key mission areas of conservation, education and research. Around 140 million visits are made to EAZA member institutions each year. EAZA is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. With a membership drawn from more than 40 countries, languages and cultures, encompassing municipal zoos, charitable foundations, and private family‐owned operations, EAZA is probably the most complex and certainly the largest professional zoo and aquarium association worldwide. The work of the association is carried out by the staff of the EAZA Executive Office and on a voluntary basis by the members, through the many committees and working groups that work to agreed strategies and action plans.

Executive Director
African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZAB)


Purpose of position: The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Executive Officer of the Association and take responsibility for the operations of the Executive Office. The incumbent will oversee the overall strategic development of the Association, in line with the approved strategic plan and imperatives of the Association.

Specific functions and activities:
Drive the implementation of, and give effect to, the Council and Executive Committee decisions and directions of the Association;
Provide effective operational and administrative support to the PAAZAB Council and the Executive Committee;
Ensure that the Association is represented effectively at, and contributes to, all relevant and important forums, and to provide knowledgeable leadership on matters of interest;
Be the first point of contact for all stakeholders that engage with the Association,
Be the public face of the Association, thus serving as the brand champion for the Association, its membership and the zoo & aquarium industry in general;
See to proper administration of the Association's finances and support the responsible member(s) of the PAAZAB Executive in ensuring that the affairs of the Association are conducted in line with sound governance and legislative requirements and according to the PAAZAB constitution;
Co-ordinate the implementation of the PAAZAB Operational Standard, the Accreditation Standard and all other industry standards adopted by the Association;
Co-ordinate and support the work of standing committees and structures of the Association
Market the Association actively and diligently to potential members
Ensure that existing members are satisfactorily served and supported
Actively source funding opportunities for PAAZAB to improve the financial viability of the Association

Requirements
1. The minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a zoological, environmental or wildlife area and at least 10 years working experience in a zoo or aquarium, or related field .

2. A sound knowledge and understanding of the zoo and aquarium industry, locally, regionally and internationally.

3. Up to date knowledge and experience of trends in the zoo and aquarium industry, the field of wildlife conservation and the specific role that zoos and aquaria can play therein.

4. Appreciation and understanding of the education and public engagement role played by zoos and aquaria.

5. Experience in managing the public interface, particularly the political dynamics in the field of wildlife conservation and its impact on the zoo and aquarium industry.

6. Insight, sensitivity, and the emotional maturity to deal with people at all levels and from all cultures and points of view.

7. Excellent communication and writing skills.

8. Good project management and execution skills.

9. Senior management experience will be a distinct advantage.

Position Description: 
Provide overall creative and professional leadership and management to ensure the measurable  success and growth of the Seneca Park Zoo Society. Direct staff to meet and exceed the Zoo Society’s goals and guide them by the tenets of our mission, vision, values, By-Laws and Board of Trustees’ polices and direction. Initiate, support and provide the structure to implement  innovative education programs, capital improvement projects, financial strategies for success and cultivation of donors in line with the Society’s Guiding Principles. 

Responsibilities: 
  • Provide creative, professional leadership to show measurable success and growth for the Seneca Park Zoo Society. 
  • Maintain and encourage open communications with the Board of Trustees, Board Committees, County Administration and both staffs (Monroe County and Zoo Society) to foster a productive working environment and to promote our messages in a positive light. 
  • Provide a structure to achieve the goals of the Zoo Society as set by the Board of Trustees and in keeping with the organization’s Guiding Principles. 
  • Provide direction and support to the Associate Director, and four Department Directors, to established annual goals with clear outcomes that are measurable for tracking success.
  •  Provide direction and leadership for all of the Society’s capital improvement projects in the areas of vision, design, conservation and educational components, funding, communication, coordination, Board/County/Community relations and fiscal responsibility to produce exhibits that meet our Mission and Guiding Principles. 
  • Provide direction and support to the Development staff to aid them in identifying, cultivating and soliciting financial support from individuals, corporations, foundations, government and other sources to successfully meet and/or exceed their fundraising goals. 
  • Provide direction that provides for clear, timely communication of information to internal and external audiences about matters of importance and interest. Ensure that our message is consistent, positive and adheres to our Guiding Principles.
  • ​Consult and support the Communications Director to produce high quality, interesting and informative printed materials. 
  • Assume a leadership role, which often includes the role of liaison, on Board of Trustees and Volunteer Committees. 
  • Provide direction and support to the Associate Director to ensure the Zoo Society is fiscally responsible and that monthly financial reports are accurate and reflective of our financial health. 
  • Provide direction and support for the Director of Education and Interpretation to ensure interpretive design and messaging is consistent throughout Zoo facility and educational programming exceeds the needs of our community. 
  • Provide direction and support to the Visitor Services Director in an effort to continuously improve the quality of the experience and that best practices are being implemented to keep visitors engaged and enlightened. 
  • Consistently cultivate and raise funds from individuals who can support the Zoo and maintain a quality stewardship for those donors. 

Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent. Master’s Degree preferred. 
  • Previously held a management or high-level administrator position at a not-for–profit or conservation organization. 
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, public relations, communications, marketing, finance, human resources, strategic planning and community outreach.

EARS European Alliance of Rescue Centres and Sanctuaries

EARS is a network that supports and represents Animal Rescue Centres and Sanctuaries across Europe, enabling them to work together to achieve mutual animal welfare and conservation goals. EARS is a strong and effective European network and works to promote and achieve continuous improvements in animal welfare and tackle the very reasons that necessitate the existence of rescue centres and sanctuaries.
EARS is a new and evolving organisation with a great deal to achieve.

To help reach its goals EARS is looking for an

Executive Director  (16 - 20 hours per week)

Your role
You are responsible to develop and manage a membership based organisation focusing on supporting and delivering key processes and activities. In collaboration with the Board you develop strategy and implement the work plan of EARS. You execute the day-to-day management of the alliance, including budgeting and financial management and legal compliance. You will organize and support Board (and other) meetings and annual Partner meetings. You are the main contact point for Partner rescue centres and sanctuaries and develop relationships with rescue centres and sanctuaries across Europe interested in joining EARS. At national, regional and international levels you develop and maintain close contacts and good relationships with relevant institutions (government and non-governmental). You also develop and maintain communication tools for internal and external audiences: reports, websites, briefings, and leaflets. You seek funding for EARS initiatives and operations.


Your qualifications
  • Working and thinking at an academic level (in a relevant subject: animal welfare and management, Wildlife conservation, NGO management)
  • Experience and awareness of European rescue centre and sanctuary related issues.
  • Experience with and knowledge of working in managing network type organization.
  • Sector-oriented knowledge and experience (NGO /animal welfare / conservationwill be an advantage.
  • Managerial and administrative skills
  • Good financial / budget management skills
  • Strong networking and collaborating skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and diplomatic skills.
  • Master of the English language, both written and spoken
  • Ability to show initiative, work independently (self-motivated) and as part of a team
  • Willingness to learn and acquire knowledge and skills as required.
  • Capable of working with common computer programs and applications and basic website maintenance (or willingness to learn the latter).

We offer
You will be an employee of EARS but the contract is currently managed by AAP Rescue Centre for Exotic Animals in the Netherlands. The starting salary ranges between € 1.762,- and € 2.292,- gross per month (bases on 20 hrs) and depends on relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with the Association President, you will be responsible for the overall operations of the association and for ensuring sound human, financial and material resource management of the organization. You will plan, organize, direct and supervise the main activities of the Association in collaboration with the National Office team in accordance with the strategic guidelines adopted by the Board of Directors. You will make recommendations to the Board on its activities as well as on all standards, policies and procedures designed to have a medium- to long-term positive impact on the organization. In your role as spokesperson for the association, you will participate actively in raising its profile and developing its network of partners. You will represent the Association during discussions with external stakeholders and in the context of different events involving the general public and the Association’s partners, such as the associations to which it belongs and various levels of government. You will ensure strategic monitoring of the context in which the Association is evolving, while constantly paying attention to its operations, financial health and sustainability.


Key Experience and Competencies

·        Undergraduate university degree in a relevant discipline.
·        Ten years’ experience in a senior management position, working with a Board of Directors;
·        Ability and experience as a spokesperson.
·        A modern, unifying and honest manager, known for leadership, who knows how to voice authority and make courageous decisions.
·        Demonstrated ability to negotiate long-lasting business and financial partnerships, maintain a national and international network to raise the profile of the Association.
·        Capacity to communicate effectively with all levels inside and outside of the organization.
·        Strategic vision and capacity to translate this vision in concrete activities and results.
·        Solid financial management skills
·        Expertise and experience in strategic planning.
·        Passion for the Association’s mission.
·        Knowledge of the context in which the members of the national and international zoo and aquarium associations evolve (such as the AZA, AZAC and WAZA), as well as the challenges they face, would be an asset.
·        Demonstrated capacity to work effortlessly in English and the ability to communicate in fluent French is required.


CAZA-AZAC National Office is located in Ottawa.  The contract nature of this position allows flexibility in work location but proximity to Ottawa would be an asset.

They will also have excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan and prioritise workloads, and monitor and report on progress against strategies and plans.
