Position: Unpaid Internship (3 spaces available every time slot)


Location: Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, BWI


Responsibilities: Dolphin Cove (Cayman) Ltd is offering an exciting and engaging internship for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in the marine mammal training field. This internship will provide candidates a unique opportunity to work very closely around Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and a variety of exotic birds, supervised at all times by professional and experienced trainers. Gaining not only marine mammal and bird training skills, but human care knowledge as well, successful candidates will have the opportunity to obtain firsthand experience by assisting with daily husbandry, training and play sessions, acquire and sharpen their public speaking skills, assist with lagoon and property maintenance as well as provide assistance for the bird team on a regular basis. Minor administrative work related to the company and the animals will also be required, as well as any other related duties asked of them.


Requirements: Successful candidates should posses a positive attitude, good communication, observation and organizational skills, with the ability to accept direction, work well with others as part of a team as well as individually when required. An interest and general knowledge in marine life and animal conservation is highly recommended. Candidates must be willing to commit to an approximate 3 month internship plan including weekends and bank holidays. Financial stability must be provided, as proof that candidates can financially support themselves for an unpaid stay on Grand Cayman. There is a shared intern house available to rent at (maximum 3 people) approximately $600KYD per month, with utilities approximately $500KYD per month. The shared house is within walking distance to Dolphin Cove, small shops, the beach as well as a direct bus route into town (details regarding the living arrangements will be given upon selection).


Please note: The internship itself does not cost anything to participate in.


If selected, candidates must be financially stable to commit to an approximate 3 month stay on Grand Cayman (arriving on the 29th or 30th of the month, ready to start the internship on the 1st of the month – leaving the island on the 27th or 28th of the month, non negotiable) as well as obtain and provide a clean police report and medical insurance coverage.

Dolphin Explorer (DE) is offering an opportunity for education and experience for tomorrow's workforce. DE has several internship opportunities available to those interested in pursuing career in Animal Care and Animal Training.

General Statement of duties: The animal care intern is responsible for assisting the DE staff in the care and feeding of de DE animals including the cleaning and maintenance of land and water exhibits. Also the opportunity of learn a basics steps of the animal training.

Description: Our non paid internship is designed to assist those passionate and interested in entering the career of animal training, the opportunity to gain valuable hands on experience. Interns under close supervision and guidance will participate in food preparation and all aspects of general husbandry care of our collection of bottlenose dolphins. This includes general cleaning and maintenance of equipment and facilities that are necessary to conduct dolphin interactive programs with the general public. Interns will learn how to brief the guest and before and guide them during the interactive programs (with dolphins, sea lions, sharks and rays).

Responsibilities:
Assist the trainers in the general daily care of the animals in the assigned exhibit and holding areas
. Maintain exhibits and holding areas in a clean and presentable condition at all times
.Interns will assist in the daily cleaning and upkeep of food preparation areas, assist in the daily preparation of diets and proper handling of fish, and vitamins.
Physical abilities include lifting up to 50 pounds blocks of frozen fish
. Working conditions are mostly outdoors in predominately strong sun , high heat and humidity
.Intern must be able to follow oral and written instructions in English (Spanish is a plus as the training staff speaks Spanish and English)
.May be asked to complete season's long project as assigned by the Senior Trainer and\ or the Director of Animal programs
.Responsible for other duties as assigned by the Senior Trainer and \ or the Director of animal programs
. Must have strong communication skills as speaking to the general public is required.

Reporting : The animal care intern reports directly to the Senior trainer and Supervisor .

Requires : A high school diploma or GED certificate
. Prefer candidates that are pursuing a degree in a zoological related field
.Must be able to work weekends, holidays and evenings as assigned
. Scuba diving certification is preferred
. Must have proof of a valid international medical insurance for the full internship period.

THE INTERNSHIP IS UNPAID AND NO HOUSING IS PROVIDED.

Interns are not paid and are responsible for their own housing and transportation while here. 2009 winter application must be received no later than October 31st.

The 2009 winter internship starts on November 30th. .
