ANIMAL KEEPER: PRIMATES AND SMALL MAMMALS

Noah's Ark Zoo Farm is pleased to be offering a new keeper position as part of the continuing growth of the zoo.

We are looking to recruit a full time keeper on the primate and small mammal section. The successful candidate will be based on the primate section working under the lead section keeper but will also be involved other sections around the zoo.
Applicants should have at least 1 years' experience working with primate species in a full time position. Qualifications are preferred but not essential. Pay is competitive within the industry and will depend on relevant previous experience.

This position is full time and permanent, subject to the normal probation period. Applicants must be happy to work within the Christian ethos of the zoo and open to working weekends and bank holidays. Working hours 8am- 5pm five days a week including weekends and bank holidays.

Qualified Keepers are responsible for carrying out all aspects of animal care, including husbandry routines, managerial operations and environmental enrichment, and supporting veterinary intervention as required.

The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of a team, have the ability to use their initiative, display an interest in and commitment to animal welfare and conservation, and must possess strong communication skills

This role is responsible for supporting the Team Leader with the co-ordination & supervision of the daily operations of the team and ensuring high standards of animal husbandry are maintained at all times.

The successful candidate will have specialist taxonomic knowledge and experience in Primates and Small Mammals. They will also hold 5 GCSE’s or equivalent and a full driving licence valid for the UK, allowing them to drive park vehicles. The DMZAA or equivalent qualification is also essential at Senior Keeper level.

Applicants will be able to work well as part of a team, have the ability to use their initiative, display interest and commitment to animal welfare and conservation, and must possess strong verbal communication skills, as talking to members of the public is an essential part of the role.

An opportunity has arisen to join our Animal department as a Team Leader of the Primates & Small Mammals section.

The role is responsible for coordinating & supervising daily operations of their team, under the direction of the Collection Manager.

Senior Technician – Small Mammals

The College is seeking to appoint a Senior Technician – Small Mammals to contribute to the Animal Studies department. 



The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily husbandry and care of the animals housed in the “small mammal” section of the College’s animal centre. The successful applicant must be competent and have a passion working with a range of both domestic and exotic mammal species. You must be prepared to undertake further training and CPD to extend your knowledge to other species that the college may acquire.



You will join a friendly team of experienced staff and will be offered training and development to build upon existing qualifications and experiences.



The successful applicant must be able to act on their own initiative whilst working to guidelines, protocols and quality standards as set out by the College and the industry and posses a desire to work with young people in a lively environment and have the necessary motivation and aspiration to progress and develop themselves within the department.

Salary £18,870 per annum

There is a full time vacancy for an experienced mammal keeper at Bristol Zoo Gardens. This is a supervisory role that will support the section’s Curators.

The successful applicant will be an experienced mammal keeper and will have at least five years experience of working with zoo animals. Having practical knowledge of the husbandry of small nocturnal mammals will be an advantage.

You will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science and hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals – DMZAA (previously known as ANCMZA). The ability to supervise staff and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is also desirable.

This is a full time permanent position working 80 hours per fortnight as part of the departmental 14 day rota.

SENIOR HEAD KEEPER OF MAMMALS

This is a supervisory position involving stock and staff management. Responsible to the Curator of Mammals.

The successful applicant will have a minimum of 5 years experience in the husbandry of a wide range of species as well as in staff management.

Responsibilities to include:

 Monitoring the behaviour and health status of the mammal collection on a daily basis.
 Training and working closely with the team of keepers.
 Performing ‘hands-on’ duties including animal restraint when required.
 Ensuring that Health and Safety protocols are being observed.
 Assisting other departments when carrying out studies pertaining to the mammal collection.
 Writing reports and record keeping.
 Co-ordinating a roster and holiday leave for up to 25 staff.
 Member of zoo firearms crew

Requirements:

 Strong zoo husbandry background (at least five years experience).
 Three years in a supervisory position.
 City and Guilds in Zoo Animal Management, Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals or Diploma in the Management of Zoo Animals and Aquariums (or equivalent qualification) preferred.
 Experience of hand rearing desirable.
 Good leadership and team building skills.
 IT and accurate record keeping skills.
 Ability to work with students and volunteers.
 Willingness to work weekends, and overtime if required.
 Full clean driving licence.


Terms and conditions:

• 38.75 hours per week (5 day week)
• Roster that involves working 2 out of 3 weekends
• 28 days annual leave per annum (including Bank Holidays)

They will be expected to undertake all relevant aspects of work in a progressive animal collection. Assisting in the presentation of educational talks and promotion of our work with lemur conservation is essential.

4 years experience with primates- particularly lemurs, and a variety of small mammal species in a zoological environment is essential, applicants will need to demonstrate good communication skills, be self-motivated, and able to lead and work as part of a team. Possession of a relevant animal management qualification, and a full driving licence are required.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy in our Twilight Team; a diverse section including Jaguars, Bats, Spectacled bears and a variety of small mammals. Applicants should have proven zoo experience of working with Spectacled bears and also have experience with working with operant conditioning in a zoo setting.

Ideally candidates will have a higher education qualification in life sciences (min HND) and/or Animal Management Qualification but this is not essential. Previous experience in Microsoft Office packages and tractor or chain saw qualifications are desirable. The applicant must also have a full driving license and be prepared to work weekends and bank holidays in a roster system.

Salary is £14,002.56 initially, rising to £15,558.40 after satisfactory completion of the probationary period.
