Bear Manager - Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre


Recent restructuring of our team has created an exciting new role for the right person. Highly motivated, experienced, and dedicated animal professional is required to work with rescued Asiatic black bears at our Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre in Sichuan Province, China.

The position holder will work as part of our Bear & Vet Team responsible for overseeing teams of local bear care staff involved in the daily husbandry and management of the bears housed within the rescue centre. The Bear Manager is the direct report to two Assistant Bear Managers. The position also involves working closely with Bear Team Supervisors and liaising with the resident veterinary team to manage various daily operations. The Bear Manager will report directly to the Bear & Vet Team Director.


Due to Chinese visa requirements, a university degree in a relevant field and proven practical experience of 3 to 5 years are essential for this position. 


Responsibilities
  • Co-coordinating various daily operations:
    • Animal care and management;
    • Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs;
    • Ordering animal food and other stock as required;
    • Supervising volunteers;
    • Maintaining bear behavior records & databases.

  • Preparing short reports for social media, supporters, or other recipients as required.
  • Operant conditioning and formal bear training programmes for a variety of medical, behavioural and management requirements.
  • Human resources:
    • Staff evaluations;
    • Ensuring morale is maintained within bear care staff;
    • Identifying and addressing HR issues with the Bear & Vet Team Director as they arise.

Requirements
§  University degree in zoology, biology, conservation, animal behaviour or related field
§  Three to five years work experience in a captive wild animal facility or similar working environment
§  Computer literacy, including Excel
§  Strong management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently
§  Fluent in English language
§  A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff.
§  Patience and willingness to work within a different culture are essential
 Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.

Appointment is paid, full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.

Resident Veterinary Surgeon




Exciting opportunity for a Resident Veterinary Surgeon

We are seeking a Resident Veterinary Surgeon to join our bear & vet team at our bear rescue centre (CBRC) near Chengdu, China. The position will involve shared responsibility for the provision of extensive veterinary care to bears rescued from the bear bile industry, and to other resident animals and local domestic animals at the centre.

The Veterinary Surgeon will report to the centre’s Bear and Vet Team Director, but will work closely with our other Resident Veterinary Surgeon, Veterinary Nurses and Bear Management team. He/She may be required to travel within Asia and participate in welfare outreach and veterinary training projects, and work with local veterinarians.

Requirements
  • At least 5 years work experience in a large mixed veterinary practice, zoological facility, specialist referral centre, or similar working environment

  • A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff
  • Cultural sensitivity and a history of working abroad, plus a background in captive wildlife management or charitable veterinary work are beneficial

Qualified Veterinary Nurse – Moon Bear Rescue Centre in China

Do you enjoy a challenge, and are you dedicated to animal welfare?  Due to changes in visa regulations we are looking for a qualified veterinary nurse to join our China Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu.
                       
This is an outstanding opportunity for motivated individuals pursuing a career in wildlife care and welfare.  The Veterinary Nurse will work as part of a highly skilled veterinary team to ensure the care of predominantly Asiatic black bears (moon bears) and domestic animals at our rescue centre. Appointment is full-time, five days a week plus scheduled weekend work. Out of hours work may be required.

Candidates should be highly motivated with plenty of initiative and should be comfortable with both clinical and non-clinical work.  There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members you will have distinct areas of responsibility; whilst reporting to the Senior Vet Nurse.

You will contribute to the constantly evolving field of bear medicine and management and will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education.


Requirements
§  3 to 5 years work experience in veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation, zoo medicine or a specialist referral centre. (Less experienced candidates with the appropriate personal attributes will be considered)
§  Qualified Veterinary Nurse with Veterinary Nursing Degree (Degree level qualification in related field will be considered)
§  Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential
§  Strong work ethic, good humor and common sense
§  Applicants must have proficient computer skills including competency with word & excel software
§  Ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff
§  Cultural sensitivity and/or history of working abroad would be beneficial
§  Experience in captive wildlife nursing, rehabilitation or animal welfare work would be beneficial 
§  Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years

There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members, you will have distinct areas of responsibility. You will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education. Experience in captive wildlife management or rehabilitation work is preferred and senior nursing and administrative experience is beneficial but not essential. You should be comfortable living and working in a remote environment within a small community.

Formal veterinary nursing qualifications are essential for this position. Ideally you should have between three (3) and five (5) years work experience in a large mixed veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation centre, zoo or specialist referral center. However, less experienced candidates with the appropriate personal attributes will be considered. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, and good humour and common sense are required.  Applicants must be able to commit for a minimum of two (2) years.

The Care Bear Program

Aruma (4 1/2 year old male) and Tipnis (1 year old female) are Andean Bears, a disappearing species, also known commonly as the Spectacle Bear.
We need extremely reliable Volunteers who can dedicated at least 4 weeks (28 days) straight of their time to caring and enriching the lives of these Bears,.

Week 1 Volunteers responsibilities include:
-Moving through the regular rotating roster of La Senda Verde Volunteering Program to gain a good feel for the Refuge.
- Cleaning, caring, and feeding Birds, Wildcat, Monkeys, Turtles and various other animals.
- Documenting feeding and behavioral habits.

Week 2-4 Volunteer will be introduced to Full Time Bear Care.
Responsibilities include:

- Preparing Food and Feeding Bears.
- Cleaning Aruma's Enclosure and Tipnis Cage.
- Reporting each day to the on sight Veterinarians feeding and behavioral habits of the Bears.
- Working on enrichment projects to keep the Bears active mentally and physically.
- Checking the perimeter and electric fence of Aruma's cage daily.
- Helping to construct the New Bear Enclosure for Tipnis as she is growing out of her cage.
- Overall helping give these Bears a better life and the attention to detail they need.
* Please note: You may also be asked to help with the responsibilities mentioned in week 1.

Cost
Is one upfront payment of 3780 Bolivianos ($19.56 US/day approximately) for the full 1 months stay and includes:

- Shared Accommodation in the Volunteers quarters.
- Hot showers
- Sheets
- Towels
- Laundry Facilities
- 3 meals/day
- Food and medicine for the Bears you are caring for

Free The Bears Fund is looking to appoint a motivated, dedicated and caring Veterinary Care and Research Technical Advisor.

The position, based in our Cambodian bear sanctuary 45 km outside of the capital Phnom Penh, will involve aspects of both veterinary care and coordination of research programs. Working closely with the Rescue Centre Veterinary Staff, the candidate will assist the Veterinary Program Manager of Free the Bears Fund in overseeing the Veterinary Care of bears at the Cambodian Bear Sanctuary within Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre. Simultaneously, the candidate will be responsible for the Research Programs carried out on behalf of Free the Bears Fund. This will include training of Research Staff and supervising Research Candidates.

Although based in the Cambodian Bear Sanctuary, the position may require travel to participate in research study, or training in other Free The Bears Fund supported Rescue Centres.

Requirements

  • A formal qualification in veterinary nursing is preferable, though suitable candidates with a degree in a related field will be considered.
  • 3 to 5 years animal related work experience
  • Organisational skills, an aptitude for problem-solving and self-directed learning and plenty of initiative and flexibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, coupled with patience and a strong sense of humour are vital.
  • Ability to work on a team or independently.
  • Experience of working overseas in a captive wildlife situation and charitable veterinary work are beneficial.
  • Appointment is full-time, five days a week with some weekend work applicable.

We currently have a vacancy in our Twilight Team; a diverse section including Jaguars, Bats, Spectacled bears and a variety of small mammals. Ideally candidates will have a higher education qualification in life sciences (min HND) and/or Animal Management Qualification but this is not essential. Highly motivated and experienced animal professionals are required to work with rescued Asiatic Black Bears at our Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre, in Tam Dao, north of Hanoi, Vietnam, or possibly at our China Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.

This position is responsible for overseeing teams of local bear keeping staff with the daily care and management of the bears housed in numerous Sanctuaries within the rescue centres.

Senior Bear Keepers report directly to centre Senior Bear Manager. It will also involve working alongside and liaising with the Senior Vet and the resident Vet team and our Animal Conditioning Consultant to manage various daily operations.

Both formal qualifications and proven practical experience are essential for this position.

Intern Position - Fortress of the Bear

Fortress of the Bear is a non-profit bear education and rescue facility for problem orphaned brown bear cubs. We are located in Sitka, Alaska in beautiful southeast Alaska. We are looking for highly energetic individuals that are interested in acquiring experience working with brown bears in a zoological setting.

Duties will include, but are not limited to: Daily feeding, enrichment, and exhibit and night holding cleaning for bear collection; aiding the Bear Manager in training of the bear collection; daily animal cleaning, feeding, and enrichment for petting zoo animals; provide guided tours and other guest assistance; assist with educational programs and other special events; and create and implement a program for use at Fortress of the Bear under one of the suggested topics: Enrichment, Training, Habitat, OR Education.

Qualifications to include: Graduate from High School acquiring a Bachelors Degree in Life Sciences or Biology Or college graduate with a degree in Life Sciences or Biology; prior experience working with animals in a zoological atmosphere, experience with carnivores preferred; experience working with programs or education departments preferred; strong interpersonal and public speaking skills; able to lift 50 pounds; work in a variety of weather conditions; able to work weekends and holidays; positive attitude; possession of a valid driver license.

Fortress of the Bear will provide housing and transportation for the duration of the internship.
