Yorkshire Wildlife Park - Animal Department Supervisor



Due to the expansion of the animal collection at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster, a new senior position has been created as a second Animal Supervisor in the Animal Department.

Reporting directly to the Director of the Animal Department, the postholder will work jointly with the current Animal Department Supervisor to provide leadership and development for the animal team and develop the husbandry, welfare and conservation knowledge of the department as the animal collection increases.

-The successful applicant will have several years experience in a senior position in a UK collection

-Minimum qualification level of National Diploma in Zoo Animal Management

-Primate and hoofstock experience would be especially relevant

-Record keeping, Arks/Zims experience

-Protocol and systems development

-Firearms experience (not essential)

-A demonstrated history of leadership skills

-Understanding and commitment to the visitor experience

We require an experienced person to assist with the feeding and cleaning of our varied collection of birds and animals. A good knowledge of the management of exotic species is essential. You should preferably have already worked in a similar environment. The successful applicant would also be expected to assist with record keeping and keeper talks. Full training will be given.

This is a full time permanent position working a 5 day week 7.30 am – 5.00 pm with weekend working on a rota basis. Commencing January 2011.

JOB DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT = Center for Conservation and Research


SUPERVISION = Reports to the Director of Comparative Nutrition

SUMMARY = The emphasis of this position is assisting with all aspects of daily animal behavioral husbandry including environmental enrichment and training of all collection animals at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and the Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park. In addition, the candidate will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing a standardized training and enrichment program with an emphasis on improving the health and well being of all collection animals, including appropriate record keeping, fulfilling AZA standards.

The candidate will work directly with Animal, Curatorial, Animal Health, Nutrition and Education departments, in assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating training and enrichment practices that enhance the daily animal husbandry of all collection animals, including on and off-site animals used for education purposes.

In addition, the candidate will enhance and promote the science of behavioral husbandry through research and educational opportunities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Continue and enhance staff training on current topics and advances in animal training and environmental enrichment.

• Develop and implement a standardized training and enrichment program throughout the zoo and Wildlife Safari Park to include approval processes, record keeping and evaluation systems.

• Work with animal staff to assess departmental needs and current efforts to develop objective goals for new enrichment and training plans.

• Work with animal staff to evaluate current training and enrichment plans to promote further advancements.

• Assist in identification of animal behavioral problems/concerns and implement plans to alleviate such concerns.

• Work and communicate with Animal Health staff when training efforts involve medical procedural training.

• Advise and guide education staff on promoting and developing educational and engaging opportunities for zoo guests on animal welfare issues at the zoo, community, regional, and global levels.

• Advise and guide Education Department and Animal Ambassador Coordinator on developing engaging messaging for Animal Ambassadors.

• Assist with development and implementation of an educational Animal Show.

• Collaborate with necessary departments to conduct appropriate research in order to enhance behavioral husbandry techniques and procedures.

• Assist with participation efforts in collaborative research projects by providing education, support and materials to keeper staff as needed.


• Assist Horticulture, Animal Health, and Nutrition departments in developing a self-sustaining browse inventory and usage program.

• Work with the Nutrition department in developing appropriate dietary enrichment protocols including the use of whole prey.

• Understand and adhere to guidelines and recommendations established by AZA, USDA, and OSHA.

• Attend daily animal management meetings.

EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of 3 years experience training animals in a variety of situations.

• Minimum of 3 years zoo experience.

• Experience or education in program development preferred.

• Experience teaching training classes preferred.

EDUCATION

• B.S in biology, psychobiology, psychology, nutrition, animal science, or related biological field (B.S. minimum).

• Evident knowledge of effective training techniques, applications, and tools.

• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

• Effective and engaging public speaker.

• Able to stand for long periods and work in inclement weather conditions.

• Ability to drive and operate motor vehicles and hold a valid State Driver’s License.

• Current Tuberculosis Test is required before being hired.

General Information:


Located in the state of Qatar, the Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) is a private wildlife breeding centre. AWWP maintains around 2000 animals (800 birds, 1,100 mammals and 100 herps) of approximately 90 species. The mammal collection focuses mainly on ungulates and some cats. Many of those species are threatened (Addax, Arabian Oryx, Dama -, Spekes -, Red fronted- Soemmering’s gazelles etc., Cheethas, Somali Wild Ass) or unique in captivity (Beira Antelope, Phillips Dikdik). An international team of veterinarians, curators, biologists and keepers (43 staff)
runs the wildlife preservation. AWWP is associate member of EAZA , non-commercial and not open to the public.

Job description for the position as a Mammal Curator’s Assistant

• Assistance in all fields of curators work

• Mammal data administration and encoding

• Instructing and supervising staff

• Organising all daily routine within respective sections

• Administration of food stock and deliveries

• Administration of tool stock

Working conditions:

Accommodation is free at the preservation, television also electricity and water. Twenty eight days holiday per year, with no additional options for regular leave abroad. Application information for the position of Assistant to the Bird Curator

The bird collection focuses mainly on Birds of Paradise and threatened psittacines, as well as several species of ornamental birds.

The majority of the bird collection is housed in the purpose-built breeding complex, with outdoor aviaries and air-conditioned indoor units. An international team of veterinarians, curators, biologists and keepers (43 staff) runs the wildlife preservation. AWWP is associate member of EAZA and is non-commercial and not open to the
public.

Job Description: The Assistant to the Bird Curator is responsible for supporting the Bird Curator in all aspects of management of the Bird Department, including:

• Aviary maintenance, planting and design.

• Supervision of Bird keepers’ daily routine and food preparation.

• Management of reproductive activity, including bird socializations, maintenance of nest structures and monitoring of eggs, chicks and nest-building behavior.

• Artificial incubation and hand-rearing.

• Supervision of the daily distribution of birds’ medications and routine disease monitoring, as well as assistance in veterinary treatments.

• Supervision and assistance in bird transfers.

• Record-keeping, data collection and data encoding.

• Preparation of guidelines, protocols and working schedules for Bird Department personnel.

• Administration and record-keeping of Bird Department human resources.

• Management of food stocks and insect production.

• Management of equipment, tools and consumption materials.

Applicants for the position must fulfill the following requirements:

• Basic computer skills (Word, Excel and internet as a minimum).

• High level capability in oral and written English.

• Ability to work independently as well as within a team.

The following experiences/skills would be beneficial for the application:

• Experience in bird husbandry, nutrition, disease, ecology and behavior.

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park is seeking an experienced and hardworking dedicated keeper to deputise in a small team of enthusiastic likeminded keepers. We have one of the leading collections of large carnivores in the UK including snow leopards, tigers, lions, cheetah, wild dogs, wolves and hyenas. The position will also include some reptile work.

This is a very physical role and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake all duties on the section from cutting up/prepping meat, cleaning, maintaining records to designing and building enclosures. The deputy will be required to manage the section in the absence of the Section Manager. Conservation education plays a big role in the park so there will be plenty of opportunities for doing talks and displays to the public.

You must have significant experience working with large carnivores in a zoo park or equivalent environment and posses an excellent knowledge of large carnivores. Hands on catch and restraint experience and meat preparation experience is a must as is a full valid driving licence. We are looking for an individual who is hardworking, passionate and committed with a knowledge of current conservation issues and experience in recordkeeping, writing risk assessments and presenting talks to the public.

Some reptile experience would be an advantage as would a firearm licence and experience gained in off road driving. An animal management qualification or equivalent is not essential but would be an advantage as would experience in a supervisory or leadership role.

The Isle of Wight Zoo is the Island’s original and leading zoo. It is located on the popular east coast of the Isle of Wight overlooking a spectacular sandy beach just half an hour’s drive away from the capital town. The zoo is privately operated by a proactive and dedicated team.

A valuable and exciting opportunity has arisen for an Animal Department Supervisor to head a specialist collection comprising mainly of big cats and lemurs, alongside a small collection of other exotic species and farm and companion animals. The Role


Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is looking for a skilled and knowledgeable amphibian and reptile keeper with a thorough understanding of the role and function of a modern zoological collection and in situ conservation programmes.

Responsibilities will include the daily husbandry and management of a large and diverse collection in conjunction with the other section staff, detailed record keeping, research and scientific writing, tours behind the scenes, participation in wider herpetological and zoo activities and collaborating with other organisations.

The Candidate

It is essential that applicants have proven experience in the successful husbandry of certain amphibians, reptiles and/or fish (in other Zoos, Aquariums, Museums, Universities, private collections, etc) and ideally have at least a first degree in a relevant subject. A logical, precise and scientific approach to animal keeping is required and competency with standard computer software is vital.

This position involves certain physical exertion, such as climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and/or working in awkward positions.

Good written and verbal communication skills and considerable interpersonal skills are required, as the position involves. extensive interaction with visitors, donors, and the press with a high degree of appreciation of customer service. The successful applicant will be a strong team player able to show a high degree of initiative and independence.

Protect the Griffon Vulture in Israel

Protect the Griffon Vulture in Israel

Help us protect the Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) in Israel:

We invite you to participate in our efforts to protect the endangered population of the Griffon Vulture in Israel. In order to sustain and conserve these vulnerable birds.
We conduct nest surveillance at Gamla Nature Reserve, which is located at the center of the Golan Heights in northern Israel.
The area is very calm and remote from the center of the country (and usually from the news...).
In the canyons of this Reserve exists one of the last and largest breeding colonies of Griffon Vultures in Israel.
Volunteers from all over the world participate in this project. They help us watch and document all behaviors (courtship, mating, incubating, hatching, feeding, fledging etc.) and track fledglings and juveniles which are ringed and/or fitted with radio transmitters.

Schedule:
The project starts from the beginning of December 2009 until the end of June 2010. Daily observations are carried out during light hours (a total of 8 hours a day).

Volunteering terms:
Volunteers will work 6 days a week (including weekends) and will have one day off. Special permission is required to take more than two successive days off. Traveling to and from Israel will be on the volunteers' account. We will provide them with accommodation (in the near-by town - Kazrin) and transportation to the reserve.

Desired qualifications:
We prefer volunteers who have some background in birdwatching and/or nature protecting activities, and volunteers who will be able to commit to at least four successive weeks.
The candidate should be able to communicate in basic English, have some basic excel skills, have valid permission (visa) to stay in Israel and should be fully covered with life/health insurance.

Requirements regarding the observations – volunteer should also be
• In good physical condition as the observation spots are reached on foot
• Willing to work under harsh weather conditions – extremely hot in the summer and tremendously cold in the winter
• Patient and willing to sit alone on the cliff for long hours
• Highly motivated, dedicated and responsible

Department: Birds


As an Avian Case Study Coordinator in the Birds Department, you will have the zoological role to primarily assist in the studies of the anatomy, physiology, characteristics and environments of animals in particular birds. You will also be responsible for the care and well being of animals under your attendance and show understanding and sensitivity to the needs of these animals. You will be involved with maintenance and landscaping of the animal exhibits, and presenting at daily demonstrations. Dedication to conservation issues and animal welfare is a key element to this role.

It will be essential to posses relevant Tertiary qualifications and the knowledge and skills to undertake the following:

Zoological/Biology:

•investigates the interrelationships between animals and their environment by studying animals in their natural surroundings, in captivity and controlled environments
•studies and performs research on birds, gathering data on their growth, nutrition, reproduction, prey and predators
•studies the development and functions of animals
•devises methods for population control, especially of vermin and pest animal species

The Veterinary Doctor is required to oversee the development of the veterinary care programme at the Wildlife Sanctuary and to ensure that the welfare of the animals remains highest priority. The veterinary doctor will work closely with the managers, veterinary advisors, animal keepers and veterinary students. The Veterinary doctor is aware of the role that Munda Wanga plays in environmental education in Zambia, in animal welfare and husbandry education and in animal conservation in Zambia.
Overall Aims of doctor

1. Day to day running of the Veterinary Clinic.
2. Prepare veterinary protocol manuals for all animals in quarantine, ready for release or those that are at the Munda Wanga for long term care.
3. Training of all animal keepers and a veterinary students from University of Zambia.
4. Oversee diet and feeding regimes for all animals at Munda Wanga.
5. Develop and implement the protocol for all new arrivals, injuries, vaccinations, bottle feeding and other issues that arise.
6. Assist with maintaining animal record database in good standing according to PAZAAB and ISIS standards.
7. Have input into the release of animals back to the wild with regards veterinary procedures.
8. Assist management with improving the management systems at Munda Wanga and ensure that protocols and systems are implemented and targets are achieved.

General Operations
The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure that;
• All the animals receive the care and attention they require.
• That all animal records be appropriately maintained.
• The animal section of the Munda Wanga runs as per the Munda Wanga’s veterinary protocols (once fully developed).
• All new arrivals are vaccinated and health screened.
• Maintain all animal records, ensuring that all new arrivals receive ‘record sheets’ and that such sheets remain regularly updated. According to PAZAAB and ISIS regulations.
• All the Munda Wanga’s animals are inspected daily alongside animal keepers.
• The daily feeding and cleaning operations alongside animal keepers are overseen.
• All sick and injured animals receive the required medication.
• All veterinary testing of the Munda Wanga’s animals, e.g. stool and blood are taken when required.
• That post mortems are carried out when required to identify causes of death
• All animals in long term care are routinely tested and vaccinated as per Munda Wanga veterinary protocol.
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the Munda Wanga’s animal welfare protocols, to ensure that the Munda Wanga maintains a high standard of animal welfare practice.

Animal Keepers
The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure:
• All hand-reared orphans that may arrive at the Munda Wanga are well looked after with regards both their physical and mental health.
• Daily records are professionally maintained for any orphan with regards their feeding, behaviour and weight.
• All animal keepers are trained to do medical checks every morning during their morning round and that they report to the head keeper and veterinary doctor if anything is wrong.

Veterinary Clinic
The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure that:
• The veterinary clinic is operational and can cater for basic operations.
• Relations with the University Vet School are maintained and that the students coming for practical training are supervised.

Reporting
The Veterinary Manager shall ensure:
• That any serious injuries or illnesses to any animal be reported to management immediately, allowing for adequate and quick follow up.
• All veterinary care carried out must be suitably recorded for future use.
• That all records and reports are well catalogued and that any monthly reporting to Management is achieved, in a timely manner. That an easy to use database be established to allow easy access to veterinary records.

The Taronga Conservation Society Australia (TCSA) operates Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, catering for local, interstate and international visitors. The Taronga Wildlife Hospital (TWH), a well-equipped and modern veterinary hospital and quarantine facility, operates at Taronga Zoo, Mosman. The TWH is responsible for the maintenance of the health and welfare of the TCSA animal collection, treatment of wildlife brought into the Hospital, and participation in conservation, research and education programs.

Taronga Zoo is seeking an experienced individual to become a member of a multidisciplinary veterinary team in the role of Assistant Laboratory Technical Officer. This position is currently part time (2 days per week) with a possibility of becoming full time hours in the future. There is high potential for advancement to a more senior position with greater responsibility.

The Assistant Laboratory Technical Officer will become competent with the day to day activities of Taronga Zoo’s clinical pathology laboratory, including microbiology, haematology, biochemistry, parasitology and other clinical pathology investigations on samples submitted to the laboratory. The position also assists the Diagnostic Veterinary Pathologist with, necropsies and pathology data entry and is responsible for maintenance of the necropsy room.

The position assists with the maintenance of quality control for all tests, laboratory and pathology equipment, stocks of laboratory and pathology disposables, media and ensures a high standard of practice, hygiene and cleanliness in the laboratory and necropsy room.

The successful applicant will possess;

· Tertiary qualifications in Applied Science or equivalent combination of knowledge, skills and experience.

· Demonstrated experience in all aspects of clinical microbiology and an interest in and a willingness to learn about the haematology and parasitology of wildlife

· Experience in maintaining a laboratory including cleaning, washing up and occasionally making up of media.

· Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team effectively.

· Demonstrated computer skills and proficiency in database applications and Microsoft Office.

· Demonstrated planning and organisational skills including the ability to prioritise work and meet established timeframes and a commitment to accurate record keeping, fact finding and data collection.

· Effective verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills, including the ability to establish effective working relationships and produce reports.

Duties include:

The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate the ability to train other staff in the process of training and conditioning animals and have a strong focus on company goals. They must demonstrate knowledge in the use of operant conditioning and training.

Tertiary education in areas relating to training and conditioning of animals and staff is essential.

The Cheetahs/Primates Department will be developing over the next 5 years to include Great Apes. Therefore, applicants with a strong background working with Great Apes would be preferred.

It is also preferred that the successful applicant have experience in training exotic and domestic animals for film and television.

The Aquarist is responsible for the care of all living species in the Living Species areas, including marine and freshwater fish and invertebrates, as well as reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and invertebrates.

Daily responsibilities may include prepping food; diving in the 188,000 gallon open air Kelp Forest tank to clean, feed, and observe animals, as well as to educate the public while diving; participating in collecting trips for new specimens of marine fish and invertebrates; and completing all necessary paperwork

Major Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for care and husbandry of aquatic and other living collections which may include marine fish and invertebrates, desert animals, and quarantined individuals.

Maintains exhibit tanks, diving tanks, cleans animal areas, prepares and feeds food, treats any diseased individuals as necessary and working on the collecting vessel.

Maintains the animal database record-keeping system and completes all related paperwork.

Assists identifying and collecting species and safely transport specimens to facility.

Responsible for all animal acquisitions, exchanges and transfers.

Responsible for caring for living collections in any and all emergency conditions.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Science or a related biological field of study required.

Minimum of 2 years of aquatic animal experience working in a public aquarium or related facility environment.

Demonstrated knowledge of safe animal handling practices and maintaining a safe working environment.

Must posses an open water SCUBA certification and have a history of diving in tanks and open oceans with experience in aquatic animal care.

Experience working with a variety of marine and freshwater species of fish and invertebrates preferred.

Previous experience with the maintenance and operation of large life support systems including sand filters, canister filters, UV sterilizers, protein skimmers, and ozone generators is desirable.

Ability to walk ½ mile in full dive gear (on level ground) as well as to lift 80 pounds. Must have the ability to walk beach rocks and tank platforms as well as having good physical skills to escape injury from wild or captive animals.

Experience collecting marine organisms and knowledge of varying collecting methods is a plus.

Knowledge of boat safety is a plus.

Must pass annual dive physical examination.

Intermediate computer skills.

Strong communication and organizational skills.

Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.

Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends, holidays and some evenings..

The Head Keeper will be responsible for the day to day management and welfare of all livestock within the BugWorld Experience and will report directly to the General Manager. We are looking for a responsible, organised and confident individual, it is essential that they have:

  1. Proven experience working with invertebrates within a zoological collection (ideally a BIAZA member collection).
  2. A proven ability to give engaging and high quality talks and demonstrations to members of the public and other groups.
  3. A positive attitude and a real enthusiasm for this job and for the care of invertebrates.
  4. Computer literate.
Ideally, the individual will also have:

The Nutritionist is responsible for ensuring the dietary health of all
Living Collections animals as well as maintaining cleanliness and stock of
the various components, including food, in the food preparation kitchen. The
Nutritionist creates and implements food preparation guidelines and
procedures, provides necessary supplements, and designs nutritional
parameters to ensure proper dietary regimes for the Living Collections
organisms.

- Prepares all diets for Living Collections aquatic and terrestrial
animals ensuring high quality food with proper nutritional content.
- Assists the Veterinarian and other Living Collections staff with animal
care
- Maintains inventory and develops purchasing lists of kitchen items and
additional food as needed.
- Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of all food preparation surfaces

- Ensures high quality control on food stock, including maintaining
complete and accurate food storage temperature logs.

* The Assistant to the Blue Macaw Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Blue Macaw Coordinator in all aspects of management of three species of Blue Macaw (Hyacinth, Lear’s and Spix’s Macaws):
* Aviary maintenance, planting and design.
* Supervision of Blue Macaw Keepers’ daily routine and food preparation.
* Management of reproductive activity, including bird socializations, surveillance camera observations, maintenance of nest structures and monitoring of eggs and chicks.
* Artificial incubation and hand-rearing activities.
* Supervision of the daily distribution of birds’ medications and routine disease monitoring, as well as assistance in veterinary treatments.
