The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) is the professional association for good zoos and aquariums. We drive excellence in animal welfare, conservation, education and research, demonstrate the value of zoos and aquariums to society and use our collective expertise to influence policy and champion positive behaviours.  

We have an exciting new vacancy for a Communications and Campaigns Officer to join our small, dedicated team and support us in developing and delivering on our strategic goals.  

The Role 

The Communications and Campaigns Officer will work primarily with the Communications and Public Affairs Manager and the Chief Executive to develop and implement our new communications strategy. You will play a key role in raising the profile of BIAZA, promoting the work of our members and contributing to public affairs campaigns.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Work with the Communications and Public Affairs Manager and the BIAZA CEO to deliver on BIAZA’s aims and objectives in communications and public affairs 
  • Developing and delivering a range of digital online communications, including mailings, letters and BIAZA’s newsletter.  
  • Developing video and film for BIAZA.  
  • Developing high quality briefing materials for a range of audiences including political and media briefings.  
  • Supporting and where appropriate deputising for the Communications and Public Affairs Manager and CEO in meetings. 
  • Working with colleagues in BIAZA committees and working groups including organising task forces and developing ideas.  
  • Developing communications reports which track changes in BIAZA’s audiences.  

 

Essential skills: 

  • Excellent spoken and written English 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) and the ability to communicate in a confident and engaging manner at all levels 
  • Experience in writing clear and compelling copy in a range of formats, catering to different audiences and with different messaging 
  • Knowledge and experience of effective communications including digital tools, monitoring and mailings 
  • Experience in videography and social media management  
  • Experience in delivering and evaluating campaigns for a variety of audiences  
  • Strong attention to detail including proofing skills 
  • Be able to work to tight deadlines and prioritise effectively 

 

Desirable: 

  • Experience in research and distilling complex ideas into clear messages 
  • Graphic and design skills 
  • Strong organisational skills and experience in organising stakeholder events 
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for politics, political procedure and influencing policy 
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to conservation, as demonstrated by career path, voluntary work or outside interests  

 

This role will be mainly home based, however, regular travel to London for team, and other, meetings will be required. There will also be a requirement to visit members and attend seminars, conferences and networking events around the UK and Ireland. These may occur in the evenings or at weekends. 

 

This is a full-time, permanent role contracted for 37.5 hours per week. We provide flexible working opportunities, which can be discussed at interview. The salary for this role is up to £27,000 depending on experience. We also offer 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays.

The BIAZA Small Mammal Sub Group (SMSG) is one of the teams that form the Mammal Working Group.

SMSG Mission Statement:

Our mission is to empower keepers within the BIAZA community to apply their acquired skills and knowledge, to contribute to the highest standards of husbandry and care for small mammal species.  

 

SMSG aims:

1.     Support the education of small mammal keepers within BIAZA collections.

2.     Promote advances in the husbandry of small mammal species within BIAZA collections.

3.     Raise awareness of conservation issues facing small mammal species in-situ.

4.     Contribute to and support the availability of husbandry resources relating to small mammal species.

 

SMSG co-chair role description 

The SMSG aim to support these objectives by:

  • Supporting the MWG Chair and vice chairs in working with the BIAZA Office
  • Attending at least three yearly meetings (one of which is the annual Mammal Working Group conference).  
  • Facilitating and encouraging cooperation and collaboration with other BIAZA committees and Working Groups. Responding to, advising on, and contributing to best practice guidance on matters of animal husbandry.
  • Contributing to relevant BIAZA communications and resources e.g. articles for the BIAZA website, updates for BIAZA BiteSize newsletter, presenting at conferences etc.
  • Supporting the Chair and BIAZA Office in responding to ad hoc queries from the membership.

Please note these roles can only be filled by a staff member from a member collection, you must have support from your institution to sit on the group.

Background 
The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums is a charity and governed by the BIAZA Council in its mission to provide support and services to the members towards a sustainable future for all species. The BIAZA staff work to support and provide services to the membership and are responsible for the day to day running of the Association, strategy development and implementation, coordinating and facilitating the work of the standing committees, internal and external stakeholder engagements and sector representation. 

Job Description 
This temporary role involves providing additional support for a range of administration tasks within the office while a permanent staff member is on maternity leave.  The role reports to the CEO but works closely with all other BIAZA colleagues to assist with any administration tasks as they arise, particularly the Projects and Administration Officer and Senior Manager(s).  

 

Main Responsibilities 

  • Meeting administration, including diary checking and online meeting software responsibility 
  • Taking of meeting minutes   
  • Administration of the BIAZA Admin email account including answering enquiries and distributing emails to the appropriate staff member 
  • Website administration including uploading documents, submitting jobs and events 
  • Admin support for member communications including updating contacts, proofing and formatting documents 
  • Admin support for projects and campaigns including document management, compiling survey responses, summarising data 
  • Admin support for online conferences and events 
  • Admin support of the annual BIAZA awards.  

Working Arrangements 

Intended role start date is 15th February 2021.  The position is for 15 hours a week over 3 days (some flexibility may be possible) on an initial fixed term contract for 5 months.  The salary for this position will be £10.85 per hour (£21,157.50 full time equivalent annual salary). There may be some need for extension of the contract term and/or for increased hours during busy periods, which will be further agreed if required. The BIAZA Office is currently working remotely from home but some travel to central London (Regents Park or Waterloo) for meetings may be required. 

Person Specification 

BIAZA is a small team working to progress the mission and objectives of the Association.  The successful applicant must therefore be a good communicator, have a dynamic nature and strong teamwork skills.  They need to be highly organised as well as flexible and able to effectively work from home. 

Required Skills 

  • Fluency in both written and spoken English and the ability to write and proofread text in a range of contexts 
  • Experienced in office and project administration 
  • Strong organisational skills giving an ability to work effectively to prioritise tasks, meeting deadlines with clear outputs and juggling multiple projects 
  • Proven IT skills particularly with Microsoft SharePoint, Outlook & Office Suite as well as online meeting and conference software such as Teams and Zoom 
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills and the ability to work with a diversity of BIAZA staff and members 

Preferred Skills 

  • Experience of the zoo and aquarium community  
  • Experience of a variety of social media platforms 
  • Experience of events organisation  
  • Experience of working for or with a membership-based association 
  • Experience of website administration 
  • Experience of Dynamics based databases

BIAZA, the professional association for zoos and aquariums in Britain and Ireland, based in Regents Park, London has a vacancy for a Communications Manager. The post is four days a week. You will work as part of a small team. Your role will focus on the communications (both internal and external) and administrative roles of the Association.



Post of Communications Manager

You will assist with the support and leadership that BIAZA provides for its membership and communication with them. This includes: direct communication with membership; communication with media and public; assistance with the preparation of BIAZA meetings and participation in them; assistance with the preparation of publications and policy documents; representing the association at meetings and acting as a spokesperson for the association and its membership.

You will also be expect to oversee the delivery of the communications part of the current BIAZA strategy



Qualifications, experience

You should hold a qualification, equivalent to degree level, in the area of communications / media skills / marketing. You should have an interest in the zoo and aquarium community and the role of the modern zoo.



Primary Responsibilities

• Direct communication with the membership and providing support for them

• Direct communication with external organizations, public and media including the production of press releases

• Ensuring the communication sections of the BIAZA strategy are being carried out effectively

• To ensure brand delivery and continuity

• Liaising with commercial companies and coordinating BIAZA promotions with the membership

• Ensuring that all methods of communication with members are updated and effective and maintaining and maintaining and efficient office

• Assisting with the preparation and production of BIAZA publications

• Organizing and assisting with the preparation of BIAZA meetings and events

• Maintaining the BIAZA website and other electronic means of communication and ensure the information is relevant and updated

• Acting as a BIAZA spokesperson when required

• Assisting other staff members with the development of presentations and publicity materials



Key Skills

• Highly developed communication and influencing skills

• Highly developed IT skills in relevant areas

• Effective at developing and maintaining extensive networks

• Ability to act as a spokesperson for BIAZA
