Manager, Veterinarian Science – Wellington Zoo Trust


Wellington Zoo is a treasure, housing significant populations of animals and plants and also employing a team of people who are passionate about conservation, education, research and recreation. Some 180,000 people visit the Zoo each year. The Zoo conserves precious species and raises awareness in the sustainability of ecosystems while promoting a keen interest and appreciation for wildlife.

Under the management of the Wellington Zoo Trust, the Zoo is heading in new and exciting directions. Our dream is to be the best Little Zoo in the World.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Zoo Veterinarian to manage our new state of the art Veterinary Hospital called The Nest – Te Kohanga (opened December 2009). The Nest – Te Kohanga is an unparalleled facility in New Zealand for providing care to Zoo animals, rehabilitation of native species including marine mammals and birds, and a research facility.

We are looking for a full time Manager, Veterinarian Science who will take responsibility for the day to day running of the Veterinary Hospital including managing the visitor experience and educating staff, Vet students and Massey University Wildlife Residents.

The successful candidate will:

• be a great communicator and confident engaging with Zoo visitors about the work of a Zoo Vet,
• supervise and teach the veterinary staff in their veterinary care of the collection animals and rehabilitation cases.
• maximise the use of veterinary for research projects
• be able to maximise development opportunities for Veterinary Services,
• conduct ongoing strategic planning with regards to Veterinary Services,
• be confident providing support to Zoo Keepers with respect to animal husbandry,
• develop strategic partnerships for improved outcomes,
• be confident in avian surgery and rehabilitation,
• have experience providing veterinary care to birds, primates, non-primate mammals, marsupials and reptiles,
• be capable of lecturing and supervising veterinary students including postgraduate students, and
• be familiar with enclosure design and MedARKS.

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN - ABILENE ZOO
Abilene, Texas

This position is responsible for providing technical and medical assistance in the care and treatment of all zoo specimens under the general supervision of the Curatorial staff and the Consulting Veterinarian. The position will include training on procedural techniques to provide veterinary care to the animal collection.
Candidates must be knowledgeable in the husbandry and care of a wide variety of exotic mammals, birds, fish and reptiles in a zoo or aquarium setting; as well as the medical procedures and associated rehabilitation techniques. Also, must be familiar with federal, state, and applicable industry regulations regarding animal care. Candidates must have demonstrated experience with diagnostic equipment, assisting in surgical procedures, and familiarity with protocols for handling scheduled narcotics and controlled substances; as well as a knowledge of electronic medical records keeping systems including ARKS and MEDARKS.

Work hours may include evening and weekends for emergency care. Requires a minimum of two years experience working with exotic animals; prefer work experience in the zoo and or aquarium field. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by a two year degree from an accredited college or technical school in Veterinary Technology or its equivalent; registered Veterinary Technician or equivalent certification is required, (CVT or LVT).

Candidate must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position which included but are not limited to: prolonged standing, running, kneeling, and lifting 50 pounds. Must have a valid Driver’s License with a good driving record, as a driving record check will be required for this position. Salary for this non-exempt position is $2,401.60/mo ($1,108.43 bi-weekly).
