Job Description

  • Under the supervision and direction of the Manager Veterinarian Services this position provides veterinary care to Perth Zoo animals as well as wildlife in line with the zoo’s established priorities and objectives.

  • Works collaboratively with the Manager Veterinarian Services, Veterinarians and Veterinary Nurses to provide high quality medical care to animal patients, training for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and participates in scientific research.

Job Description

The Manager Veterinary Department provides management and leadership to Perth Zoo’s wildlife health program, including management of the veterinary hospital and staff, allocation of departmental budget and other resources, veterinary involvement in research and conservation programs and projects, as well as strategic oversight of undergraduate and postgraduate student training.

In addition, the Manager Veterinary Department develops and manages relationships and partnerships within the zoo and with external parties, including within the broader DBCA aligning day to day operations with agreed strategies.

Job Description
Provides direction, leadership and management of the conservation, animal husbandry and administration of the Life Sciences program. Participates as a member of the Corporate Executive.
Selection Criteria

Applicants should address the following three (3) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than three (3) pages in total.
  1. Substantial knowledge, understanding and experience of captive animal management and wildlife conservation (supported by appropriate qualifications in, and experience with, captive animals).
  2. Demonstrated leadership skills which builds organisational capacity, agency responsiveness and delivers outcomes.
  3. Successful demonstrated experience in management including budgeting, staff and performance management.
Note: In accordance with relevant legislation and departmental policy, the successful applicant will be required to possess or obtain a current and satisfactory National Police Check prior to commencement.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This newly created position is responsible for the operational management of the Elephant Section. The role will also provide high level assistance to the Director of Life Sciences with key operational areas inclusive of capital project and works program management, pest control, supply and emergency response.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in the captive management of a range of species including large mammals; Experience in project management and delivery of project outcomes; Proven ability to manage, mentor and train staff to ensure operational requirements are met; Demonstrated analytical and conceptual skills and the capacity to review and apply legislation and standards; and Knowledge of current issues relating to the conservation and captive management of wildlife. Experience in elephant husbandry, breeding and management in a relevant environment; and experience in exhibit design in a zoo environment are desirable.
