Instructor / Technician – Animal Management

£16,776 - £20,595 (depending on qualifications)

12 Months Fixed Term

The post holder will work under the direction of the Animal Management Centre (AMC) Manager in maintaining outstanding animal husbandry standards, with a particular emphasis on assisting with the management and development of our avian collection. The post holder will also undertake practical instruction and assessment of groups of students and other trainees as required. They will work with other animal professionals as part of a wider team so must be a great team player, effective communicator, enthusiastic and be committed to evidence based animal management.

Candidates should be educated to at least level 3 in a relevant vocational subject e.g. DMZAA, Animal Management, Veterinary Nursing, Biological Science or Zoology Degree. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate significant professional experience working within an accredited animal collection.

The post holder will be required to work weekends on a rotational basis.

Hadlow College is Kent's premier land-based college and one of the top three such colleges in the United Kingdom. This role is based in Canterbury.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Technical Instructor to work with our Animal Management team, providing support and technical assistance to our teaching staff at our satellite centre in Canterbury. You will be required to give practical demonstrations and technical instruction in varying aspects of animal care to our students. The successful candidate will work as part of a small team responsible for the care of the College animals and help to develop the collection under guidance from the Animal Curator.

The ability to communicate effectively is essential for this role along with at least two years relevant practical experience in a range of animal care activities. Candidates will need the ability to work well as part of a team, and qualifications A1/A2 (D32/D33) would also be an advantage, as would teaching and demonstrating experience.

This is a part time post working 18.5 hours per week, 5 days a day, Monday to Friday. There may be a need for the post holder to work occasional weekends and bank holidays.

£16,849 to £19,130 per annum (PRO-RATA)

The successful candidate will also need to be flexible, as the part-time hours may include travelling to our satellite centre at Mottingham and our main site in Hadlow.

As well as contributory pension scheme, sponsorship for further vocational & teacher training and free car parking, this post also attracts 25 days (pro-rata) holiday each year (excluding bank holidays).

The successful candidate will be required to undertake an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check (CRB) and provide proof of their right to work in the UK.

£16,849 to £19,130 per annum - Plus Outer London Weighting £1,393 p.a

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Technical Instructor to work with our Animal Management team, providing support and technical assistance to our teaching staff at our satellite centre in Mottingham, South East London. You will be required to give practical demonstrations and technical instruction in varying aspects of animal care to our students. The successful candidate will work as part of a small team responsible for the care of the College animals and help to develop the collection under guidance from the Animal Curator.


The ability to communicate effectively is essential for this role along with at least two years relevant practical experience in a range of animal care activities. Candidates will need the ability to work well as part of a team, and qualifications A1/A2 (D32/D33) would also be an advantage, as would teaching and demonstrating experience.

This is a full time post working 37 hours per week working alternate weekends on a rota basis and you will be expected to work on occasional bank holidays.

The successful candidate will also need to be flexible, as the full-time hours may include travelling to our satellite centre at Canterbury and our main site in Hadlow.
