A Seal Internships



A Seal, a rescue center for Harbour- and Grey seals in Stellendam, Holland is accepting applications for internship and volunteer positions during autumn and winter (from the 15th of September 2018 till the 1st of March 2019).

A Seal is a nonprofit organization that aims to be a centre of expertise for marine mammals with a focus on rehabilitation of the Harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) and the Grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) which are the most common marine mammals of the Dutch part of the North Sea.
A Seal’s Internship Program is structured and designed to provide students in animal care and veterinary assistance(undergraduate degree and intermediate vocational degree) with hands-on experience in the field of seal rehabilitation.

Responsibilities:
- Assisting during all phases of seal rehabilitation (intake; quaranteens; inside baths; outside baths and release at the Dutch coast).
- (Force- and tube-) feeding of the seals
- Food preparation
- Cleaning of pens and common facilities
Qualifications:
. Must possess a strong work ethic, have high attention to detail and the ability to work with limited supervision
. Must be self-motivated, enthusiastic, friendly and able to work in a team of volunteers
. Must be 18 or older
. Must be available on weekends, holidays and during the evening hours
. During this internship the intern will experience physical activity, such as: lifting, restraining and moving animals.

  • Prior experience is not required and all training is provided. 
  • This is an unpaid position. 
  • Interns are responsible for their own housing and
  • transportation. 
  • Housing facilities (single room; shared kitchen and bathroom with other interns), 250 meters from A Seal, can be rented at limited charge.
  • Those who can work full-time hours for at least 4 weeks will be given preference.

Voluntary Keeper Internships

Shaldon Wildlife Trust is a small zoo on the Devon coast. Set in an acre of woodland, we are the smallest member of BIAZA and EAZA. Despite this we are active members of the zoo community and support conservation projects all over the word. Over the years we have gained a great deal of expertise in the breeding of many species, particularly small primates, and are regarded highly in this field.



We are currently advertising for voluntary internships for a period of 9-12 months working with our keeping department. Shaldon Wildlife Trust is open every day and the placements will be full time i.e. a five day working week including some weekends. The main role of the keeping interns will be to attend the husbandry requirements of the animal collection as directed by the Head Keeper in charge.



All internships are purely voluntary and as such it is with regret that Shaldon Wildlife Trust cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions. To ensure that interns are provided with a valuable experience; a training agreement will be completed and reviewed regularly and a training record will be provided upon completion of the placement. 



Objectives of the placement

  • To gain experience and understanding of the work of a zoo animal keeping department.
  • To apply own personal skills and take ownership of a series of tasks and/or a research project.
  • To reflect on training and experience throughout the placement.



Anticipated tasks/training provided

  • Assisting with daily animal husbandry e.g. feeding, cleaning, enrichment provision, enclosure modification etc.
  • Observations of animals and recording of relevant information.
  • Training in basic research methods.
  • Visitor interaction e.g. answering visitor questions in a polite and sensitive manner.
  • Assisting with student supervision at the direction of the head keeper.
  • Training in animal-management related computer software.
  • Training in all aspects of the company’s code of practice.



Skills Required

  • A qualification or enrolment on an animal science related discipline would be desirable.
  • Previous animal-related work experience.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Adaptable to different working environments.
  • Able to work in a team and independently.
  • Physically fit for the demands of the post.

Wingham Wildlife Park has an exciting opportunity for two enthusiastic individuals wanting to gain valuable zoo animal keeping experience, working alongside keepers on the primate section.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months, volunteering 5 full working days per week including weekends, school holidays and bank holidays. With a start date of 27th February 2017.

The internship is unpaid and would benefit those who have either already gained or are working towards an animal management or similar qualification. As well as individuals who are already established in conservation or animal care and looking for further specialist zoo experience. Experience within a zoo setting and in particular primates would be desirable. 

A driving licence or access to good public transport is essential and please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation.

Wingham Wildlife Park is a family run wildlife park with big emphasis on animal husbandry, conservation, education and safety for our animals, staff and visitors. This section covers a large variety of species ranging from callitrichidae, lemurs, mandrills, macaques & apes.

Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park
Gibraltar

The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is a small collection of exotic animals set in Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. We currently have two vacancies for voluntary internships for a period of 3-6 months (including a one month probationary period). Interns will have the opportunity to work with all the animals in our collection.

Role and Responsibilities:
• The primary role of the interns will be to participate in the daily husbandry and daily routines of the animal department. This includes feeding animals, maintaining enclosures, daily record keeping and animal health checks.
• As an intern, you will also help with the daily supervision of existing volunteers and participate in the training of new volunteers and work experience students.
• You will also receive training and be expected to participate in keeper talks and park events.
• You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the different aspects of the Wildlife Park such as veterinary treatment, enrichment and record keeping.
• Where suitable, there may also be opportunities for research projects to be undertaken.

Terms of placement:
• Interns will be required to work from 9am to 5pm five days a week on a rota basis. This will include some weekends and bank holidays as necessary.

Requirements:
• Preference will be given to applicants with an Animal related qualification or working towards an Animal related qualification
• Some experience within the zoo industry or with exotics would be desirable but not essential.
• Applicants should be enthusiastic, hard-working and have a willingness to learn new skills.

All internships are purely voluntary and as such it is with regret that The Wildlife Park cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions. Applicants will be responsible for funding all flights and accommodation during their stay.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months, volunteering 5 full working days per week including weekends, school holidays and bank holidays.

The internship is unpaid and would benefit those who have either already gained or are working towards an animal management or similar qualification. As well as individuals who are already established in conservation or animal care and looking for further specialist zoo experience. Experience within a zoo setting and in particular mammals would be desirable.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months, volunteering 5 full working days per week including weekends, school holidays and bank holidays.

The internship is unpaid and would benefit those who have either already gained or are working towards an animal management or similar qualification. As well as individuals who are already established in conservation or animal care and looking for further specialist zoo experience. Experience within a zoo setting and in particular birds would be desirable. 

A driving licence or access to good public transport is essential and please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation.
