Water Lab Manager - California Science Center Foundation

The Water Lab Manager is responsible for ensuring the quality of the water biology and chemistry for a closed system of exhibit tanks within the Living Collections department, including a 188,000 gallon kelp forest exhibit as well as several smaller marine and freshwater tanks. Working closely with the Life Support Systems Manager and the Director of Aquatics, the Water Lab Manager creates and implements policies and procedures for maintaining the quality of the exhibit and holding tank water, including ozone, pH, and nitrogen levels.

Major Job Responsibilities:

Develops and implements full water quality testing, analysis, and control procedures for closed aquatic system with both freshwater and saltwater components.

Works closely with Life Support System Manager and Director of Aquatics to ensure complete coordination of life support system functions.

Monitors levels of various components, including ozone, pH, temperature, salinity, carbon dioxide, phosphates, chlorine, bromine, magnesium, strontium, dissolved organics, calcium, iodine, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, copper sulfate, ORP, alkalinity, and other biological and chemical levels for all exhibit and holding systems.

Performs microbiological examination of exhibit and holding tank waters including testing for coliform and total bacteria.

Collects water samples, analyze using current and proven laboratory techniques, and record results.

Develops and maintains budget and inventory for laboratory operations.

Manages water disposal to sanitary sewer in accordance with local, State, and Federal regulations.

Assist Life Support Systems Manager with design, implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of LSS and water treatment.

Manages and directs a diverse staff of employees and volunteers as well as participate in the selection and training of Water Lab staff.

Implements and monitors safety standards and procedures for the Water Lab.

Maintains current knowledge of techniques and equipment used in the field.

Qualifications:

BA/BS in Biology, Chemistry, or related field.

5+ years in similar position, preferably at an AZA-accredited aquarium or comparable institution, with a strong emphasis on closed marine and freshwater systems.

Advanced knowledge of water chemistry and biology.

Advanced knowledge of methods and procedures necessary for proper sampling and analysis of water quality.

Excellent laboratory skills, including ability to analyze data, prepare technical reports, and interpret and evaluate technical information.

Excellent problem solving skills.

Strong technical writing skills, as well as effective oral communication essential.
Proven ability to supervise and manage a diverse and technical staff.

Demonstrated ability to work with various computer programs and software related to essential functions of position.

Knowledge of OSHA and Cal OSHA standards in an aquarium environment.

Experience creating and maintaining budgets.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Salary: $3,333.00 - $3,750.00 per month with excellent benefits and 14 holidays per year

Reports To: Life Support Systems Manager

Position Summary

The Water Laboratory Manager is responsible for ensuring the quality of the
water chemistry of a closed system of marine and freshwater exhibit tanks
within the Living Collections department, including a 188,000 gallon kelp
forest exhibit. Working under the Life Support Systems Manager and closely
with the Director of Aquatics, the Water Laboratory Manager will create and
implement policies and procedures for maintaining the quality of the exhibit
and holding systems water. The Water Laboratory Manager will collect,
analyze, interpret and record water samples while making appropriate changes
to procedures as necessary.


*Qualifications *

- BS/BA in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field.

- 5+ years in similar position at an AZA-accredited aquarium or
comparable institution preferred.

- Advanced knowledge of water chemistry with a strong emphasis on closed
marine and freshwater systems.

- Detailed knowledge of the methods and procedures necessary for the
proper sampling and analysis of water.

- Previous experience operating/managing a water chemistry/quality
laboratory preferred.

- Excellent laboratory skills including ability to write procedure
manuals.

- Strong technical writing skills and effective oral communication are
essential.

- Computer literacy in essential programs to analyze, interpret, record
and report results to appropriate facility personnel.

- Proven ability to supervise and manage a diverse and technical staff
preferred.

- Knowledge of OSHA and Cal OSHA standards in an aquarium and laboratory
environment preferred.

- Experience creating and managing budgets preferred.

- Ability to lift 50 pounds.

- Contribute to the mission of the California Science Center Foundation
by stimulating curiosity and inspiring science learning by creating fun and
memorable experiences for the guests.

- Perform other duties as necessary.

*Salary:* $3,333.00 - $3750.00 per month with excellent benefits and 14
