Monkey World is currently home to over 250 primates of 20 different species including 57 chimpanzees, 17 orang-utan, 5 different species of gibbon, and 3 troops of woolly monkeys. The majority of our primates are rescue animals from a variety of different backgrounds. Many have suffered years of abuse or neglect. On arrival at Monkey World these primates are rehabilitated into appropriate social groupings and provided with an environment which encourages them to express natural behaviours.

Job Description
The Primate Care Team is divided into six sections: chimpanzees, orang-utans, gibbons, capuchins, woolly monkeys, and a varied ‘small monkey’ section. Our primates enjoy large enclosures, varied enrichment, and a comprehensive operant conditioning programme.

Primate Care Staff are encouraged to assess and manage the care of the primates on their sections by assessing the health and welfare of the primates, modifying and developing the houses and enclosures, and overseeing the introductions and rehabilitation of new arrivals. This is a job for animal keepers who want to be involved in the care and rehabilitation of primates.

Primate Care Staff are offered local accommodation, sharing with other staff, as well as travel and study grants.

Ideal candidates will possess:
•        At least 2 years experience working with primates
•        Must be physically fit
•        Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team
•        Experience of public speaking
•        Full clean driving licence essential due to location
•        A flexible friendly attitude

A qualification in an animal related discipline and/or experience of operant conditioning would be desirable.
Salary Dependent on experience.

Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park
Gibraltar

The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is a small collection of exotic animals set in Gibraltar Botanic Gardens.

We currently have two vacancies for voluntary internships for a period of 3-6 months (including a one month probationary period). Interns will have the opportunity to work with all the animals in our collection.

Role and Responsibilities:
• The primary role of the interns will be to participate in the daily husbandry and daily routines of the animal department. This includes feeding animals, maintaining enclosures, daily record keeping and animal health checks.
• As an intern, you will also help with the daily supervision of existing volunteers and participate in the training of new volunteers and work experience students.
•    You will also receive training and be expected to participate in keeper talks and park events.
•     You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the different aspects of the Wildlife Park such as veterinary treatment, enrichment and record keeping.
• Where suitable, there may also be opportunities for research projects to be undertaken.

Terms of placement:
• Interns will be required to work from 9am to 5pm five days a week on a rota basis. This will include some weekends and bank holidays as necessary.

Requirements:
•    Preference will be given to applicants with an animal related qualification or working towards an animal related qualification
•    Some experience within the zoo industry or with exotics would be desirable but not essential.
•    Applicants should be enthusiastic, hard-working and have a willingness to learn new skills.
All internships are purely voluntary and as such it is with regret that the Wildlife Park cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions.
Applicants will be responsible for funding all flights and accommodation during their stay.

Experienced Animal Keeper

Anna’s Welsh Zoo has a vacancy for two experienced keepers to join their dedicated team in an exciting and rapidly developing collection, working on all sections of the zoo. These are full time positions working 5 days out of 7 on a rotational basis.
The ideal applicant will have worked for at least 2 years in a recognised zoological collection: experience of working with large ungulates and Sumatran tigers would be beneficial however this is not essential to the role. Applicants would have ideally been awarded the DMZAA or equivalent but relevant experience will be taken in to consideration. Good communication skills are essential as you will be expected to deliver a variety of keeper talks and engage with visitors. A firearms licence is desirable and you will require a clean UK driver’s license.

The responsibilities of this role will include cleaning, feeding and the provision of general care for the animals and their exhibits, as well as ‘natural’ enrichment items and enclosure furnishings.  You will be working as part of a team and on your own as required.

Animal Keepers - NZ Native Animals Section


We are seeking to employ two suitably skilled people for the above position. You will need to be a highly driven and energetic individual with a passion for New Zealand's native wildlife.

Duties of the position will include:
  • Providing a high standard of daily care and welfare to a variety of unique native birds and reptiles.
  • Daily behavioural observation, health checks and record keeping.
  • Involvement in breeding programmes for threatened native species, e.g. whio, pateke and kiwi, including artificial egg incubation and chick rearing.
  • Implementing behavioural enrichment programmes.
  • Conducting fun and informative presentations to educate visitors on the plight of native fauna.
  • Native planting and predator control.
  • Maintenance of aviaries, enclosures and surrounding habitats.

The ideal applicant will possess the following skills and attributes:
  • A minimum of three years animal husbandry experience. A working knowledge of basic avian and/or reptilian anatomy and husbandry is highly desirable.
  • A Unitec "Care of Captive Wild Animals" certificate or equivalent qualifications would be considered an advantage.
  • Knowledge of endemic New Zealand fauna, particularly birds and reptiles.
  • Responsible mature attitude and team player
  • Great organizational and leadership skills with superb communication and customer service
  • High level of physical fitness with good practical and maintenance skills, for example aviary maintenance, tree pruning and general horticultural knowledge
  • Strong interest in conservation and caring for New Zealand's native fauna.


As animals require care seven days a week, the position will be based on a roster system including weekends and public holidays.  Hours of work are 8:30am to 5:00pm. Bristol Zoological Society has three vacancies for animal keepers on its Mammal Section at the Bristol Zoo Gardens site in Clifton, Bristol.  One positions if permanent, two positions are temporary covering maternity leave. 

All three positions will be working 80 hours per fortnight as part of the departmental 14 day rota, which includes weekends and bank holidays.

The successful applicants will be experienced zoo mammal keepers and must have at least two years’ full time experience of working with a variety of zoo mammal species, great ape experience would be an advantage.  You will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science, and holding the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals ( DMZAA) < or equivalent, will be an advantage. The ability to work within a team and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is also required.

Twycross Zoo - East Midland Zoological Society Limited, is a World Primate Centre.  The Zoo has a comprehensive collection of primate species, together with other mammals, birds and reptiles.  With over 850 animals, the Zoo has exciting plans to further its work in the conservation of endangered species and is striving to achieve the best in animal welfare, research, conservation and education. 
We have more to do and as the Zoo develops we are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

We have a vacancy for a Grade 2 keeper on the Birds & Tropical section, which manages a range of birds including hornbills, flamingos, penguins and parrots and a range of reptiles, small mammals and invertebrates.

We are seeking a high performing individual with a proven track record in zoo animal management.  You will have a minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the natural history and management of animals in their care.  An appropriate animal-related qualification would be advantageous.  This position is a key role which will involve providing basic animal husbandry and regular interaction with the public.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system, at present - but will become a 2/3 role from November 2014 (approximately). Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform and 31 days holiday per annum.

Salary range £14,500 - £14,613 per annum

Two vacancies have arisen to cover long term sick leave in the animal department. The successful applicant will preferably have some experience of working with zoo animals and will be based on the mammal section.

Applicants should be educated to at least GCSE level and to include English and a biological science.

Initially these roles will be for a period of three months and will both be dependent upon the return to work of the job holders so they may be extended further however this will be on a short notice basis so these roles will suit you if you are looking for some zoo animal husbandry experience on a flexible short notice basis.

The full time position is working on average 40 hours per week as part of the section rota while the part time position is for 24 hours. Both positions will include weekends and bank holidays working hours.

Bristol Zoo is proud and excited to take the first step on a journey towards achieving the ultimate goal of the National Wildlife Conservation Park by opening Wild Place in the summer of 2013.
Building on and celebrating the natural environment, Wild Place will be an invigorating setting that brings nature and the woodland to life. This family-led attraction will focus on fun, play and learning with children and adults being inspired to protect threatened habitats on their doorsteps as well as around the globe.
These roles will be part of the animal team and be crucial for ensuring our conservation and wildlife message is top priority, but you will be required to be flexible and assist with wider day to day operating duties as and when necessary. 

The successful applicant will have at least two years’ experience of working with zoo animals.  Knowledge of mammal husbandry would be an advantage.  Applicants should be educated to at least GCSE level and include English and a biological science. The successful applicant will be expected to study for the DMZAA qualification in Zoo Animal Management if he/she doesn’t already have this qualification.
