General Animal Keeper / Education Assistant

A position has become available for an Animal Keeper / Education assistant, this is a 6 month contract to start, 40 hours a week, weekend work and flexibility in working hours is essential to this role.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated and highly motivated individual to join our small, friendly team. This position involves tasks such as cleaning, feeding, and enclosure maintenance, covering various sections as required.

The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring the highest standard of care for your charges, and must be capable of working well within a team, as well as alone and unsupervised. You must be educated to at least GCSE level in English and Maths, and an animal based qualification is desirable.

Due to the physical nature of the job, applicants will need to be physically fit and healthy, and be fully prepared to work outside in all weathers.

Other duties will include:-
•        Assisting in Educational workshops to school groups,
•         Keeper talks to the general public,
•        To assist Photography groups,
•        To assist with Birthday parties
•        Assist with our Animal Contact Sessions

Requirements
•        A good knowledge of exotic wildlife and global animal conservation issues is a must.
•        An ability to communicate this knowledge to both the general public & students.
•        Experience in presenting talks to the public is needed.
•        A full driving license is essential due to our rural location.
•        Your own transport is required.

We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic Education Assistant to support Paignton Zoo’s informal education provision over the summer period, delivering high-quality, engaging activities focused on conservation and biodiversity, to enable young people to understand why biodiversity matters, improve their understanding of the role of environmental parks in conservation and to motivate and empower them to take action to conserve biodiversity.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Informal Education Co-ordinator and education volunteers.  Applicants should possess GCSE Science and/or Geography, or equivalent, and have a demonstrable enthusiasm for communicating conservation and biodiversity issues, together with experience of engaging directly with children of all ages and levels of interest.  They should be confident, patient and reliable with the ability to use their initiative and adapt to changing circumstances, while also possessing good communication and organisational skills, helping to ensure that visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience.
Based at Paignton Zoo, this is a part-time seasonal post, for 25hrs each week (average), including weekends and Bank Holidays.

We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic Education Assistant to design and deliver high-quality, positive and engaging communications on conservation and biodiversity issues for all ages - to enable audiences to understand why biodiversity matters, improve their understanding of the role of environmental parks in conservation and motivate and empower them to take action to conserve biodiversity.

Based at Living Coasts, in Torquay, the successful candidate will design and deliver presentations and activities for all visitors, adjusting to specific audience needs; supervise presenter rotas; lead delivery of out of school hours activities including clubs and summer schools; assist Education Officers in the delivery of school sessions; design and produce resource materials and written information; and evaluate and modify presentations and activities.

Applicants should possess GCSE Science and/or Geography and an A-level or equivalent in a relevant discipline.   Additionally, you will require a relevant science communication/education qualification or equivalent experience and will be able to demonstrate experience of designing and delivering public presentations and activities, co-ordinating events and writing and creating resource materials and interpretation.  You will also have demonstrable enthusiasm for communicating conservation and biodiversity issues and experience of working with children and adults of all ages and abilities. 

This is a part-time post for 30 hours per week.  Occasional evening, weekend and Bank Holiday work will be required.  Salary £17,491.50 pro rata

Job description: The UK's most visited zoo is seeking a highly motivated individual to assist our education officer in the implementation of our education program. 

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  1. Organise education activities for zoo visitors, including trails, arts and crafts and presentations;
  2. Where necessary assist in the co-ordination of school, college and youth group visits;
  3. Help prepare and develop educational resources;
  4. Assist in the delivery of national curriculum-linked teaching;
  5. Make educational outreach visits to schools and other institutions;
  6. Write zoo news and website articles;
  7. Assist in the organisation of zoo events;
  8. Assist in the general duties involved in the running of the Education Department
  9. Answer general enquiries about the education program and take bookings for animal encounters and experiences

About the employer: Flamingo Land Resort is a combined theme park, zoo and holiday village, attracting 1.2-1.3 million visitors each year. As a member of BIAZA and EAZA, Flamingo Land has a long-term commitment to biodiversity conservation and environmental education. Key selection criteria
- Studying for, or have completed, a Bachelors degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. biology, zoology, conservation, environmental science, science education)
- Experience of teaching at any level and in any environment desired
- Awareness of the role of zoos in environmental education and biodiversity conservation
- Excellent presentation skills
- Excellent inter-personal skills
- Excellent creative writing skills (including spelling and grammar)
- Computing skills including Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint and Word
- Ability to work alone and as part of a team
- Willingness to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends as required
- Enthusiastic and self-motivated
- Flexible approach to work

LONG TERM VOLUNTEERING WORK PLACEMENT (6-12MONTHS) 
Unpaid x 1 – Education Assistant, (IT Literate)

This is an exciting new project that the Five Sister’s Zoo is offering, internal training shall be provided.

We are ideally looking for you to be able to volunteer 4 days out of 7 - (hours are from 8am-4.30pm)

We are seeking x1 bright, bubbly, conscientious, enthusiastic & flexible individual, who are passionate about their work, polite, who can communicate effectively with all levels of staff, volunteers & members of the general public

  • Work directly under the Head of Education

  • The ideal candidate should be proactive & able to use their own initiative

  • Provide formal and informal interpretive educational programs for visitors

  • Be able to provide references that cover the last two years

  • Be a member of the PVG Scheme would be advantageous

  • A trial working day is required prior to applicant acceptance into the program. This assures that the internship activities are understood by the selectee and will meet their educational goals


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing a career in a related field

  • Strong communication, IT skills

  • You should work well with daily duties given to you and have an interest in the Education Sector

  • Ability to work in a team environment with staff, other interns and volunteers
