An exciting opportunity has arisen at Knowsley Safari for an Animal Manager to join our Animal Team. This is a permanent role that will cover the operations aspects of animal husbandry and welfare, and undertake sustainable resource support for the current and future living collection.

The role will see you reporting directly to the Head of the Animal Division and overseeing all areas of our animal collections and animal teams: Walkaround, Carnivore/Antelope, Rhinos/Baboons, Stock and Grounds.

The post will involve the daily management of each section, therefore, the successful candidate will have considerable leadership experience of managing one or multiple teams and have great interpersonal and communication skills. The role will also involve resource management and so you will be highly organised with the ability to be flexible and prioritise tasks in a dynamic and ever-changing environment. We are looking for someone with good animal grounding, preferably with a zoo management background.

Responsibilities include:
•        Plan and facilitate continued enclosure design & habitat improvement to the needs and requirements of a variety of species in the collection and enhance sustainable husbandry and animal welfare standards whilst maintaining optimal guest experience.
•        Liaise with contractors in regards with enclosure enhancements, track progress and quality of work and record financial performance within budget constraints.
•        Develop H&S policies and procedures and provide implementation and interpretation of these policies & procedures to animal division staff.
•        Develop and implement a sustainable procurement method for goods and services part of the animal division operations, including managing budget for animal food supply, non-food consumables, tools, PPE & uniforms.
•        Coordinate the logistics of animal transfers.
•        Monitor and manage the AD fleet and provide input towards fleet budgeting: acquisitions, disposals and maintenance.
•        Cooperate with the HoD, Visitor Services Team, Marketing and the Director of Operations to develop short and long term strategies for the development of the Animal Division and the wider Park.
•        Act as Duty Manager Animals as needed and participating member of the Emergency Team during emergencies as stipulated in the Company’s Emergency Management Team Procedures. May be a member of the Gun team.

Applicants should have a full driving licence and be prepared to work weekends and Bank Holidays on a rota system. Each role is based working 5 out of 7 days.

Manager of the Endangered Primate Rescue Center





Manager (m/f) of the Endangered Primate Rescue Center, Cuc Phuong, Vietnam

Date: 1st of February 2014
The EPRC is located 150 km southwest of Hanoi inside Cuc Phuong National Park. It was established in 1993 and managed by Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS). The center is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation, breeding, research, and conservation of confiscated endangered primates, and to the protection of their habitats. Over the years EPRC has become a well-known primate conservation institution with an internationally high reputation. 

Zoo Leipzig (Germany) has given support from the start and took over full management responsibility in 2013. The institution keeps 150 individuals of 15 primate species and employs local staff of 24 keepers. Foreign volunteers and head keepers of Zoo Leipzig will support the work force from time to time. The present manager Tilo Nadler has been running the EPRC since 1993 and will retire in 2014.

Zoo Leipzig is currently looking to find a new permanent manager. This is a challenging position in a demanding environment suitable for a highly dedicated and motivated individual.
Main duties and responsibilities:
  1. Serve as country representative of Zoo Leipzig in collaboration with the Vietnamese authorities (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cuc Phuong National Park, PACCOM, etc).
  2. Manage the daily operation of the center including the finances and the further development of the project.
  3. Supervise and manage all aspects of animal husbandry (assistance with wildlife confiscations, appropriate rehabilitation) and building and maintenance work as required.
  4. Training and supervision of Vietnamese animal keepers and site support staff.
  5. Organisation of educational work and field research, and the preparation of project proposals/reports, as well as other administrative tasks as required.
  6. Giving technical and practical advice to the authorities of Cuc Phuong NP and other authorities as required.
  7. Coordinating activities and cooperation with other conservation projects/NGOs in Vietnam.
  8. Supporting Zoo Leipzig in the acquisition of third-party funding.
Requirements:
  1. Education as biologist or veterinarian (or comparable fields)
  2. Management experience in comparable projects in Vietnam / Asia.
  3. Experience in animal husbandry (preferably knowledge of primates).
  4. Good command of English (spoken and written), knowledge of Vietnamese is a huge benefit.
  5. Excellent organisational and communication skills and ability to multi-task.
  6. Good practical skills and computer literacy.
  7. Full clean driving licence.
  8. Physically fit and able to work in a hot and humid climate.
  9. Ability to live under simple conditions in a rural area.
  10. Technical skills about electric- and watersystems (Generators, pumps, electrical fence sytems) would be an advantage.
Conditions:
The position is temporary with a minimum of two years (including a probation period of six months) and the possibility to extend the contract into a longer-term position.  Accommodation at the EPRC is available and a salary adequate to the responsibility of the position will be provided. Preference will be given to candidates indicating that they are prepared to stay for longer periods. The contract will be offered on a ‚contract for freelance work‘ basis, not as permanent staff of Zoo Leipzig. Therefore, health or social insurance contributions will not be covered.
A site visit prior signing the contrcat would be highly recommended.
Expected starting date: as soon as possible.

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), is the World Primate Centre. The zoo has a comprehensive collection of primates, including all 4 types of great ape, together with other mammals, birds and reptiles.  The zoo has exciting plans to further its work in the conservation of endangered species and is striving to achieve the best in animal welfare, research, conservation and education.

We are going through a period of transformation as the zoo develops and, as a result, are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.  Following internal promotion, a position has become available for an Animal Manager to lead and advance the Animal Department as part of the development of the Life Sciences Directorate. 

The successful candidate will have the vision to be part of the development of a world class animal department in conjunction with the senior Life Sciences team.  

Applicants must have a proven track record at a recognized zoological collection, preferably with experience of EEP, TAG or other relevant areas of zoological conservation work and best practice.  They must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be able to lead, develop and motivate a team.  A scientific background would also be desirable.  A proactive and positive approach together with strong communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern zoo is essential.

The role is full time, 5 days out of 7, including weekend duties shared amongst the senior animal team on a rota system and extra hours as required.  Salary is paid monthly with 31 days holiday per annum and employers’ pension contribution (after qualifying period).

We are looking to recruit an Animal Department Manager within the next few months in time for the major expansion of the zoo.

Ideally you should have worked with a broad variety of animal species and have at least 8 years experience in a position of practical and organisational responsibility within a Zoo or Safari Park.

We are not looking for an academic who has just left university so please do not apply unless you have the work experience as we require a practical person who understands the day to day operations of a busy zoo and a very diverse collection of animals. Qualifications are not important to us but a proven track record of good husbandry is.

You will be responsible for 15 full animal Carers and approximately 10 part time or apprentices and the welfare of all the animals on site.

To be successful in this role you will be able to work to strict quality and regulatory deadlines.

You will take ownership of this role and will be passionate and enthusiastic to work for a rapidly expanding Company with over 300,000 visitors per annum and expansion to 3 times its existing size.
