Over recent years, Zoos Victoria's has increasingly become involved in responding to wildlife emergencies. We are now looking for someone to take a lead role in developing and introducing a program to allow for a seamless involvement of Zoos Victoria in state coordinated emergency responses under the Victorian Emergency Framework. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to become part-time tour guides at The Living Rainforest, Berkshire. Following training, you will be booked on an hourly basis to guide groups of school children through our glasshouses, introducing them to various rainforest related topics and issues.
The Living Rainforest is a vibrant place which provides learning opportunities and training as well as a friendly, sociable, working atmosphere and flexible hours during term time and school holidays.
Experience working with children or in an educational role is desirable but not essential as training will be given.
Rates of pay: £12.84-£13.93 per tour
Due to our location, all applicants need to be able to drive.

Howletts Wild Animal Park, situated near Canterbury in Kent, is home to the largest breeding herd of African elephants in the UK. Through our conservation organisation, The Aspinall Foundation, we protect numerous forest elephants in Africa.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our small team of dedicated elephant keepers. Previous experience of working with animals is essential for this role, but not necessarily with elephants. However, we do expect candidates to show a passion for elephant welfare and some knowledge of current conservation issues.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake all general husbandry duties including heavy lifting and strenuous cleaning, as well as enclosure maintenance, browse cutting, grass strimming and operation of vehicles such as tractors and dumper trucks. The role is physically demanding, so you will need to have a good level of physical fitness.  Candidates must have excellent observation skills and be computer literate, you will also need be comfortable talking to visitors.
A full manual driving licence is essential for this role.

The position is 40 hours per week, working 8am to 5pm, 5 days a week. Candidates must have a flexible approach to working hours. This trainee position is paid at the national minimum wage but a living out allowance is available if you do not live in site accommodation.

Veterinary Residency in Zoological Medicine and Pathology


The Copenhagen Zoo, in conjunction with Copenhagen University and Lincoln Park Zoo is offering an ACZM- and ECZM-approved postgraduate residency program designed to produce specialists in the field of zoological medicine. The program begins in January 2019, and will run for 3 years. Reappointment for the second and third year is contingent upon the successful completion of the preceding year.
The individual completing this program will have attained a broad clinical base for future involvement in a variety of nondomestic animal practices including zoos, wildlife parks, research institutions, universities, or exotic pet referral practices.

Copenhagen Zoo is a city zoo with a diverse animal collection. Clinic facilities include a basic hospital, laboratories, isolation facilities, necropsy room, radiology, ultrasonography and endoscopy. The resident will work with the zoo’s veterinarians, animal health and curatorial staff, animal keepers and veterinary students. The resident will be based at the Zoo, but will have the opportunity to work with the faculty at the Veterinary College at Copenhagen University, and will spend time at other zoological institutions.

Qualifications for the program include a DVM degree, and a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience by the start of the program. Candidates must be fluent in written and spoken English, and a willingness to learn some Danish is expected. Candidates must be eligible to practice in Denmark. Priority is given to those candidates that fulfill the following;
1) 2-3 years of practice experience in mixed practice, exotic or zoo animal medicine, and/or completion of a 1-year internship in veterinary practice including zoo animal, mixed animal, large or small animal practice. General clinical competency is essential.
2) Excellent academic record with previous research experience and scientific publications.

Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks, in conjunction with the Aspinall Foundation, are a charity based organisation committed to protecting rare and endangered animals from extinction through captive breeding and reintroduction programmes. The parks are home of one of the world’s most prized wild animal collections and are one of the biggest visitor attractions in Kent.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team of dedicated Hoofstock keepers at Port Lympne Reserve. The section comprises of various ungulate species including; Malayan Tapir, Eastern Bongo, Visayan Warty Pigs, European Bison, Waterbuck, Water Buffalo and Takin among others. The section is involved in reintroduction initiatives for a number of these species.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with similar species, in a mainstream zoological collection and an awareness of current conservation issues and a passion for animal welfare. The main duties of this role will include:
·       Observing the behavior, health and security of animals and reporting any problems to the Section Head
  • Preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures
  • Cleaning and maintaining enclosures as well as adjacent working areas
  • Ensuring that safety and emergency procedures are followed at all times
  • Maintaining courteous and helpful relations with visitors
  • Assisting with the movement/transport of animals
  • Supporting in the training of less experienced staff and supervision of volunteers and interns.
  • Maintaining good and detailed communication at all levels, including veterinary, marketing and other animal collections.
You will need to be familiar with health and safety documentation including risk assessments and safe systems of work, have a broad taxonomic knowledge on a range of species and excellent observations skills. This is a physically demanding position, so candidates must be physically fit and a full valid driving licence is essential to the role. You will possess excellent all-round animal husbandry skills and be enthusiastic in contributing to the enrichment of the various species around the park.
This role is 40 hours a week working 5 days out of 7 including weekends and bank holidays, the successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours.

HOOFSTOCK SECTION 
PLACEMENT VOLUNTEER

We currently have a voluntary opportunity for a Voluntary Worker Placement Volunteer for a period of 6 months (including a one-month evaluation period) working within our Hoofstock department. This is a physically demanding role so commitment and a level of physical fitness is a must. It’s a very rewarding role and will allow you to work alongside keepers, aiding them in their daily duties and helping care for the animals.

Aim of voluntary worker placement volunteering role:
The main aim of the placement will be to attend to the husbandry requirements of the animal collection as directed by the Senior Keeper in charge. Voluntary Worker Placement Volunteers focus on one of our animal sections and this role specifically relates to the Hoofstock section.

The objective of the voluntary worker placement volunteering role is to:
Gain experience and understanding of the work of a zoo animal keeping department; Apply own personal skills and take ownership of a series of tasks and/or a research project; Reflect on training and experience throughout the placement. Help keepers clean, feed and care for the animals on the Hoofstock section. The role covers all the areas within the Hoofstock section and you will be asked to volunteer wherever the Senior Keeper requires you to.

Tasks:
Assisting with daily animal husbandry e.g. feeding, cleaning, enrichment provision, enclosure modification etc.; Observations of animals and recording of relevant information; Training in basic research methods; Visitor interaction e.g. answering visitor questions in a polite and sensitive manner; Assisting with student supervision at the direction of the senior keeper; Training in animal-management related computer software; Training in all aspects of the company’s code of practice.

Time:
Newquay Zoo is open every day and the Voluntary Worker Placement will be full time i.e. a five day working week including weekends.

Place of duty:
Hoofstock section enclosures / areas around the Zoo.

Senior Keeper

Skills required:
A qualification or enrolment on an animal science related discipline would be desirable; Previous animal-related work experience or volunteering; Good communication skills; Adaptable to different working environments; Able to work in a team and independently; Physically fit for the demands of the post; Must be reliable; Able to follow strict instructions.

Materials required:
A polo shirt, sweatshirt, combat trousers, fleece, and steel-toe capped wellies or boots are provided for a small deposit as part of your induction.
 
Any health and safety requirements:
Keepers will talk you through any relevant risk assessments.

All voluntary worker placement volunteers for this role must be aged 18 years or over

All Voluntary Worker Placements are purely voluntary, and as such, Newquay Zoo does not provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to register their interest for these positions. To ensure that Voluntary Worker Placement Volunteers are provided with valuable experience; a training agreement will be completed and reviewed regularly and a training record will be provided upon completion of the placement.

If you are successful in becoming a Voluntary Worker Placements volunteer with us, two references will be taken up before you are able to start and you will be required to bring your passport to your induction meeting. You will also need to bring your National Insurance card or number with you.
