Description
This position is responsible for assisting with the daily care and behavioral conditioning of the marine mammal collection, including California sea lions and harbor seals. The Assistant Trainer’s primary objective and responsibility is to provide support to senior training staff and to play supportive roles in public shows,
presentations, and feedings. The ideal candidate will be considered for promotion to Trainer within six months of employment.

Essential Responsibilities
· Assists in the daily care and behavioral conditioning of the marine mammal collection
· Assist senior staff, under close supervision, with the progression of animal training goals and standards
· Able to identify all animals in the marine mammal collection, and observe any possible abnormalities
· Possess a strong knowledge of marine mammal history, individual animal histories and husbandry
· Maintains established criteria for all existing behaviors with the entire marine mammal collection
· Maintains a high level of showmanship while performing supportive roles in daily shows and presentations
· Guide participants through animal encounter and interaction programs
· Plan and direct volunteers and interns in primary areas of responsibility
· Uphold USDA standards in all areas of operation including fish kitchen, animal areas, laboratory, freezers/coolers and medical facilities
· Perform basic water quality and life support procedures on marine mammal pools

Requested Requirements
· Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
· Must be SCUBA certified through an accredited diving agency
· College degree in biology, psychology or related science
· Minimum of 1-2 years of paid experience working with marine mammals
· Must be able to demonstrate a proficiency in public speaking and guest interaction
· Must be able to work on a team, as well as function individually with little supervision when necessary
· Must be able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds, work on un-even and slippery surfaces, withstand temperatures of hot and cold, and sit/stand for long periods of time when necessary
· Must be able to pass department swim test, including microphone test

We need an enthusiastic and outgoing individual to join our team at Tilgate Nature Centre. Someone who can engage with our visitors by giving fun educational talks about our animals, as well as hosting public activities and helping with animal husbandry tasks.
Your main role would be to interact with our visitors and tell them all about the wonderful world of animals in both formal classroom sessions, and via public presentations. Animal husbandry and animal training tasks will also be required.
The successful candidate will be passionate about the world of wildlife and sharing it with others. They will have excellent customer service skills and qualifications in animal care and/or education, with experience of public speaking.
Tilgate Nature Centre is currently undergoing a major re-development with our new Madagascan Zone opening this spring, and more zones and new animals planned for the future. This position is a unique opportunity to be involved in the development of the zoo.

Zoo Education Assistant

We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic Education Assistant to design and deliver high-quality, positive and engaging communications on conservation and biodiversity issues for all ages - to enable audiences to understand why biodiversity matters, improve their understanding of the role of environmental parks in conservation and motivate and empower them to take action to conserve biodiversity.

The successful candidate will design and deliver presentations and activities for all visitors, adjusting to specific audience needs; supervise presenters; lead delivery of out of school hours activities including clubs and summer schools; assist Education Officers in the delivery of school sessions; design and produce resource materials and written information; and evaluate and modify presentations and activities.

Applicants should possess GCSE Science and/or Geography and an A-level or equivalent in a relevant discipline.   Additionally, you will require a relevant science communication/education qualification or equivalent experience and will be able to demonstrate experience of designing and delivering public presentations and activities, co-ordinating events and writing and creating resource materials and interpretation.  You will also have demonstrable enthusiasm for communicating conservation and biodiversity issues and experience of working with children and adults of all ages and abilities. 

This is a part-time post for 30 hours per week, including occasional weekends and Bank Holidays for which time off in lieu is arranged.  Salary £16,984 pro rata.

Unpaid x 3 – Assistant Zoo Keeper’s

This is an exciting new project that the Five Sister’s Zoo is offering, internal training shall be provided.

We are ideally looking for you to be able to volunteer 4 days out of 7 - (hours are from 8am-4.30pm)

We are seeking x 3 bubbly, bright, conscientious, enthusiastic & flexible individuals, who are passionate about their work, polite, who can communicate effectively with all levels of staff, volunteers & members of the general public.

  • The ideal candidate should be proactive and able to use their own initiative

Assist animal keepers with feeding, cleaning, exhibit preparation and renovation, plant care, and observing animals

Provide formal and informal interpretive educational programs for visitors

Help implement animal enrichment programs

Learn and follow animal/keeper safety guidelines, operations and polices

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing a career in a related field
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment with staff, other interns and volunteers
  • Must enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions, be physically fit and be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • A trial working day is required prior to applicant acceptance into the program. This assures that the internship activities are understood by the selectee and will meet their educational goals

Your challenge...
Every section is designed to help our Adventurers get up even closer and more personal with the cheeky, the mischievous and the exotic – and in this key role, you’ll be right there at the heart of it, making sure that everything runs smoothly.
Supporting the Zoo Manager in the safe and efficient delivery of the Zoo Operation, focusing on animal welfare and husbandry and of course, Adventurer experience!

Key objectives include:
 Manage and promote the compliance and adherence to all relevant Health and Safety Procedures and Protocols, to ensure the highest standards for self, visitors and guests.
 A track record in Leading, motivating and developing teams/sections to maintain the highest possible standard of Animal Husbandry, Animal Welfare, Conservation, Education and Guest Experience.
 Have a sound knowledge, experience and understanding of ‘positive reinforcement’ animal training.
 Some knowledge and experience with large Hoofstock would be preferable.
 Ensure the delivery of agreed ‘Xtra Adventure’ activities.
 Business acumen with some budgetary experience if possible.
 Develop methods to encourage/increase Adventurer dwell time in the Zoo areas of the Resort.

Chester Zoo is one of the premier Zoos in the UK and a major tourist attraction for the
region. Our Assistant Presenters are responsible for improving the visitors’ experience to the Zoo.

We have three vacancies to join our Presenter Team. The contracts will run from 12th July to 5th September 2010.

The posts demand lots of public interaction, requiring a confident and outgoing personality. Acting as an information point you will be helping visitors to enjoy their day and be able to answer their questions. Duties include looking after visitors in animal exhibits (including Fruit Bat Forest) and in our visitor centre, and assisting / supervising the summer holiday events (which will include storytelling, touch-tables, chats and demonstrations). Work is both indoors and outdoors.

Applicants should have a good knowledge of plants and animals (including the Zoo’s animal collection), knowledge of current conservation issues, be empathetic to our mission and be a good team player. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience of working in Zoo Education.

Work is 5 days in 7, including bank holidays and every weekend. Hours are 9.30am to 5pm daily, rate of pay is £5.98 per hour.
