Monkey World is currently home to over 250 primates of 20 different species. The majority of our primates are rescue animals from a variety of different backgrounds. Many have suffered years of abuse or neglect. On arrival at Monkey World these primates are rehabilitated into appropriate social groupings and provided with an environment which encourages them to express natural behaviours.

Job Description
Monkey World is looking for an experienced primate keeper to support the team leader on our gibbon section. Monkey World is home to the largest collection of golden-cheeked gibbons outside Southeast Asia as well as Mueller’s, lar, agile and siamang gibbons. The section consists of two family groups of golden-cheeked gibbons and numerous pairs and individuals all rescued from the illegal pet trade or re-homed from zoos.

Monkey World has a sister sanctuary in Southern Vietnam, Dao Tien. There will also be opportunities for collaboration with this insitu conservation project as well as the possibility of travel and educational grants.

The successful candidate will help to oversee all aspects of the section including animal husbandry, diets, operant conditioning, enrichment and health checks. You will also be responsible, in the absence of the team leader, for staff training and monitoring.

Qualifications/Experience
This role requires a primate keeper with at least 4 year’s experience – including at least 2 years gibbon experience.

Applicants will need to demonstrate good communication skills, be physically fit, self motivated and able to lead and work as part of a team.

Desirable
Full driving licence
Shotgun certificate
Experience of public speaking
Experience of operant conditioning
Familiarity with rescue and rehabilitation of primates



Salary
Dependant on experience.

Condition of appointment
This position will be subject to a six-month probationary period

Monkey World assists governments around the world to rescue primates that have been smuggled from the wild. At the centre refugees of this illegal trade as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect are rehabilitated into social groups.
