Resident Veterinary Surgeon




Exciting opportunity for a Resident Veterinary Surgeon

We are seeking a Resident Veterinary Surgeon to join our bear & vet team at our bear rescue centre (CBRC) near Chengdu, China. The position will involve shared responsibility for the provision of extensive veterinary care to bears rescued from the bear bile industry, and to other resident animals and local domestic animals at the centre.

The Veterinary Surgeon will report to the centre’s Bear and Vet Team Director, but will work closely with our other Resident Veterinary Surgeon, Veterinary Nurses and Bear Management team. He/She may be required to travel within Asia and participate in welfare outreach and veterinary training projects, and work with local veterinarians.

Requirements
  • At least 5 years work experience in a large mixed veterinary practice, zoological facility, specialist referral centre, or similar working environment
  • Excellent clinical and organizational skills, attention to detail, an aptitude for problem-solving medicine and self-directed learning and plenty of initiative and flexibility
  • A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff
  • Cultural sensitivity and a history of working abroad, plus a background in captive wildlife management or charitable veterinary work are beneficial
  • Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years

Appointment is paid, full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.

Munda Wanga Environmental Park Veterinary Doctor

The Veterinary Doctor is required to oversee the development of the veterinary care programme at the Wildlife Sanctuary and to ensure that the welfare of the animals remains highest priority. The veterinary doctor will work closely with the managers, veterinary advisors, animal keepers and veterinary students. The Veterinary doctor is aware of the role that Munda Wanga plays in environmental education in Zambia, in animal welfare and husbandry education and in animal conservation in Zambia.

Overall Aims of doctor

1. Day to day running of the Veterinary Clinic.
2. Prepare veterinary protocol manuals for all animals in quarantine, ready for release or those that are at the Munda Wanga for long term care.
3. Training of all animal keepers and veterinary students from University of Zambia.
4. Oversee diet and feeding regimes for all animals at Munda Wanga.
5. Develop and implement the protocol for all new arrivals, injuries, vaccinations, bottle feeding and other issues that arise.
6. Assist with maintaining animal record database in good standing according to PAZAAB and ISIS standards.
7. Have input into the release of animals back to the wild with regards veterinary procedures.
8. Assist management with improving the management systems at Munda Wanga and ensure that protocols and systems are implemented and targets are achieved.

General Operations

The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure that;

All the animals receive the care and attention they require.
That all animal records be appropriately maintained.
The animal section of the Munda Wanga runs as per the Munda Wanga’s veterinary protocols (once fully developed).
All new arrivals are vaccinated and health screened.
Maintain all animal records, ensuring that all new arrivals receive ‘record sheets’ and that such sheets remain regularly updated. According to PAZAAB and ISIS regulations.All the Munda Wanga’s animals are inspected daily alongside animal keepers.
The daily feeding and cleaning operations alongside animal keepers are overseen.
All sick and injured animals receive the required medication.
All veterinary testing of the Munda Wanga’s animals, e.g. stool and blood are taken when required.
That post mortems are carried out when required to identify causes of death
All animals in long term care are routinely tested and vaccinated as per Munda Wanga veterinary protocol.
Contribute to the ongoing development of the Munda Wanga’s animal welfare protocols, toensure that the Munda Wanga maintains a high standard of animal welfare practice.


Animal Keepers

The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure:

All hand-reared orphans that may arrive at the Munda Wanga are well looked after with regards both their physical and mental health.
Daily records are professionally maintained for any orphan with regards their feeding,behaviour and weight.
All animal keepers are trained to do health checks every morning during their morning round and that they report to the head keeper and veterinary doctor if anything is wrong.Veterinary Clinic The Veterinary Doctor shall ensure that:
The veterinary clinic is operational and can cater for basic operations.
Relations with the University Vet School are maintained and that the students coming for practical training are supervised.

Reporting

The Veterinary Manager shall ensure:

That any serious injuries or illnesses to any animal are reported to management immediately, allowing for adequate and quick follow up.
All veterinary care carried out must be suitably recorded for future use.
That all records and reports are well catalogued and that any monthly reporting to Management is achieved, in a timely manner. That an easy to use database be established to allow easy access to veterinary records.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with a mission to be “a major force in conserving biodiversity world wide”. The zoo has an international reputation for its high standards of animal welfare, husbandry and conservation breeding and for its contribution to conservation, education and research. It is also just beginning a major phase of redevelopment and expansion which makes this a particularly exciting time to join the team.


A vacancy has arisen for the position of Veterinary Manager to run the zoo’s veterinary department. The post holder will be responsible for delivery of the clinical service together with two other veterinary surgeons, two veterinary nurses and a quarantine coordinator/administrator. In addition the Vet Manager will coordinate and develop clinical aspects of the zoo's research output (working alongside other zoo scientists including a nutritionist, endocrinologist and applied ethologist) and run our clinical residency programme.


We are seeking a strong team player and experienced zoo/wild animal clinician for this exciting role. The applicant will be expected to hold a relevant post graduate qualification to Masters level or above and have a proven track record in research. They must also hold or be eligible to hold membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (licence to practice in the UK).


The role is full time, 40 hours per week; with weekend duties shared amongst the vets. Salary is £33,525, increasing to £37,250 on successful completion of the probation period.

General Information:
Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) is Sheikh Saoud Al Thani’s private breeding centre for threatened wild animals.

Since January 2000, a professional wildlife management is established and AWWP has traveled a rigorous way to transit from a typical Arabian private animal collection to a research and breeding centre for threatened species. The mission of AWWP is to maintain genetically and demographically sustainable captive populations of animal species by providing best facilities conducive to breeding success, behavioral, nutritional and health requirements. At the moment more than 2,000 wild animals (about 500 birds and 1,500 mammals) in 95 different species are under the care of AWWP. Some of the animals are very rare in captivity and/or highly endangered. Few of them are only kept in captivity at AWWP. The preservation is managed by an international team of veterinarians, curators, biologists and keepers (42 staff). AWWP is non-commercial and not open to the public.

Job description for the position as Junior Veterinarian:
- 40% laboratory work, 35% administration work, 25 % clinic work
- Assistance in all laboratory work like blood work, microbiology and parasitology.
- Assistance in necropsy of different wild animal species.
- Assistance in the organization and execution of laboratory, hospital and clinic maintenance
- Assistance in all fields of zoo and wildlife veterinary work.
- Recording of health programs and related data administration
- Administration and management of stock lists
Applicants for the position must fulfill the following requirements:
- Veterinary degree and some basic experience.
- Flexibility and good organization skills.
- Experience in office administration, good computer know-how (Word, Excel and Power Point).
- Good communication skills and fluency in English
- Ability to work independently and within a motivated international team.
- Patient and sensitive to the animals needs, experience in animal handling and interest in wildlife

Working conditions:
Accommodation is free at the Preservation. Four weeks holiday with one paid ticket home per year. Flexible working hours, depending on the season. We currently have a vacancy for a Research & Studies Officer, reporting to the Animal Health & Research Manager. This important role is to support, initiate and drive research at the Zoo, providing a high standard of service to researchers, students and Zoo staff. It involves communicating effectively with internal and external individuals and organisations to implement the Zoo’s research strategy. The job holder will also ensure that the veterinary procedures files are well maintained, liaising with the Animal Records Registrar. The role requires someone who has both research and veterinary knowledge and experience.

Full Job Profile for Research & Studies Officer

Key Responsibilities:

• Facilitate student and other external research as per the Zoo Research Strategy
• Initiate research in areas of priority for the zoo and on occasion act as supervisor for such projects
• Support research and conference presentations by zoo staff and support keepers on Animal Management courses and other zoo-funded training, acting as zoo tutor for the Sparsholt animal management course • Manage the database of research projects
• Liaise with the Animal Records Registrar to ensure medical files of documents relating to veterinary procedures are maintained
• Have responsibility for keeping the Zoo’s research web pages up to date
• Respond to enquiries about research, manage the research application process, support researchers during the course of their research on site, liaising with supervisors, negotiating with section heads, zoo sections and management as necessary.
• Ensure that project reports are received and disseminated. Prepare reports on project outcomes in order to inform standard operating protocols
• Maintain a database of zoo publications and posters
• Provide reports as requested on zoo research activity
• Facilitate links with the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine, supporting research staff in zoo related projects, initiating priority projects and encouraging support from students
• Support the development of Wildpro and the integration of the Wildlife Information Network into the Zoo as a new department
• Support the WildTech project
• Establish relationships with researchers in other local, national and international research establishments in fields of interest to the zoo
• Represent the zoo on external committees as appropriate
• Represent research interests on in-house bodies as appropriate, such as training, enclosure design, enrichment committees

Key Skills and Requirements:

• Demonstrates research experience
• Essential has veterinary knowledge and experience
• Able to cope cheerfully with a variety of work and be flexible in their approach
• Able to work as part of a team and build networks to support research
• Has good communication skills, effective at all levels and in all appropriate environments
• Good presentation skills
• Will be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check, which must be clear
• IT literate and confident with Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Has an interest in the Zoo’s work and purpose

Hours of Work:
Normal hours are 0900 to 1800 (1700 in winter, when clocks change) Monday to Friday

The Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) was established in 2003 by Münster Zoo and the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP). It is the first nature conservation centre in Cambodia, located on 25 ha of land in the Phnom Kulen National Park, ca. 40 km north of Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor Wat. The goals of the ACCB are the rehabilitation of confiscated, mainly globally threatened wildlife and the conservation breeding of selected species, in combination with environmental education and capacity building of local communities and an expanding in-situ conservation programme.

The ACCB is currently looking for a Volunteer Veterinary. This is a challenging and rewarding position in a demanding environment suitable for a highly dedicated and motivated individual interested in making a contribution to conservation and working in wildlife veterinary medicine.

Main duties and responsibilities:
- Attend to animal stock at ACCB, including initial health check and monitoring of new arrivals during quarantine, routine checks and health screening of animal stock
- Develop new and refine existing protocols from a specialist veterinary perspective, e.g. regarding initial examination, quarantine, husbandry and maintenance in general as well as specific for certain animals (e.g. pangolin, water snakes) – potentially develop long-term database to be maintained.
- Training of ACCB staff in standard veterinary procedures, e.g. identification and treatment of parasites, capture and restraint, injections, post mortem examination, potentially also chemical immobilisation etc.
- Advise on and assist with improvements of animal facilities, e.g. repairs, furnishing of enclosures, environmental enrichment, building work etc.
- Maintenance and update of surgery room, drugs stock and veterinary equipment.
- Carry out all aspects of animal husbandry and rehabilitation in collaboration with the animal keeping team.
- Assist in building and maintenance work and with administrative tasks as required.
- Assist with the daily operation and further development of ACCB.
- Other tasks as required. Specific projects at ACCB as well as in the field may be undertaken.

Requirements:
The veterinarian reports to the project and the collection managers and works in close cooperation with the animal keeping team, in particular the foreign head keeper.
- Good command of English (spoken and written).
- Excellent organisational and communication skills and ability to multi-task.
- Good practical skills and computer literacy.
- Physically fit and able to work in a hot and humid climate.
- Ability to live under simple conditions in a poor, rural and isolated area in a different culture.
Conditions / remuneration:
- Travel expenses at the beginning and the end of the contract
- Free shared accommodation at ACCB and a small salary to cover living expenses
- On-site transport and satellite internet available, also for reasonable personal use
Preference will be given to candidates indicating that they are prepared to stay for longer periods.

CERCOPAN (Centre for Education, Research and Conservation of Primates and Nature: www.cercopan.org) is concurrently urgently recruiting volunteer veterinarian to start September/October 2008. The voluntary position involves managing the veterinary programme for a busy rehabilitation (over 140 primates of 6 rainforest species) and conservation project in southern Nigeria; duties include management and training of primate care staff, training veterinary nurse, developing and implementing a programme of training newly employed national veterinarian. The positions will also involve monitoring preventative
medicine, following reintroduction and quarantine protocol guidelines and coordinating veterinary activities.

This is a challenging and rewarding position for anyone interested in making a contribution to primate conservation and working in wildlife veterinary medicine.

Requirements: Experience or second degree in wildlife veterinary medicine required - can arrange for specific primate experience in the UK for appropriate applicant. Room, board and a Sterling stipend are provided, as are flights (from Europe/UK only) for a minimum 1 year contract, preferably 2 years.
