The School of Veterinary Medicine and Science (SVMS) at the University of Nottingham is the first brand new, purpose-built veterinary school in the UK for over 50 years and it is our intent to make significant leading contributions to both veterinary research and teaching within the context of valid relevance and application to the wider veterinary profession.
Research is central to the activities of the School, both in terms of maintaining ourselves at the forefront of national and international efforts in veterinary medicine but also as an integral part of the training and education for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
All current clinical practice should derive from advances in research. The overarching purpose of research activities within SVMS is to improve clinical practice and teaching. Clinical practice encompasses many aspects of animal health including diagnosis, treatment, prophylaxis, production and welfare management. Thus, improved clinical practice is the outcome of full integration of research themes with the clinical requirement. The School has established relations with a number of Clinical Associate Institutions and Educational Partners and these Clinical Associate Practices are fully integrated into the research and teaching environment of SVMS and their clinical requirements drive much of the research development.
This unique role consists of a 4 year training post, based at one of the Clinical Associate Practices (Twycross Zoo) and will combine preventive and reactive veterinary care based at the zoo including pathology of all species.  It will involve training of clinical veterinary students and undertaking a research doctorate project leading to a DVet Med which will be supervised by academic members of staff based at SVMS. CHESTER ZOO STUDENTSHIPS 2012

CHESTER ZOO STUDENTSHIPS 2012

Chester Zoo Strategic Statement: To develop a substantial, expanding role in the conservation of global biodiversity and habitat enrichment; and to support this through sustainable commercial activities, including managing the zoo as a world class visitor attraction.

The Chester Zoo Studentships are awarded annually. They provide financial support for projects that benefit the conservation of biodiversity, provide a capacity building opportunity for student scientists and further the zoo’s partnerships with academic institutions. Several Chester Zoo Studentships are awarded each year, for up to a maximum value of £1000 per project.

Projects should relate to the in-situ conservation of biodiversity, and can be conducted overseas or in the UK. All applications should relate to studies that will be conducted before April 2013.

Student eligibility:

Applications are welcomed from projects which contribute to undergraduate or masters degree qualifications and for university endorsed expeditions (only one application per expedition will be accepted)

The studentships are open to students from both UK and international academic institutions

The award does not support PhD research projects, tuition fees, or costs that would normally be met by the university/college

Field work organised by a third party, non-academics and expeditions run by agents are also ineligible for studentship support.

Details required in the studentship application include the aims of the project, a statement of its relevance to conservation, methodology and a clear budget breakdown.

Clarity, feasibility and health and safety will be an important criterion when judging the submitted proposals. A short CV and all relevant risk assessments paperwork should also be attached with each application.

Chester Zoo expects those awarded studentships to uphold the high standards expected of its own employees, and to be fully acknowledged in any presentations or publications. It is a condition of the studentship that Chester Zoo receives a full written report of the research project within six months of completion and copies of any resultant publications. Chester Zoo may also request receipted expenses and reserves the right to request that any special equipment purchased through the studentship remain the property of the zoo once the project is completed.

For further information please contact conservation@chesterzoo.org or to download our application form visit the conservation pages of http://www.chesterzoo.org/
